Return to Bethel, Renewal and Loss

God calls Jacob back to Bethel; renewed worship and promises accompany a journey marked by birth, grief and family responsibility.

Again at Bethel •

35:1

God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there; and make there an altar to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”

35:2

So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments;

35:3

then let us arise and go up to Bethel, that I may make there an altar to the God who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.”

35:4

So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was near Shechem.

35:5

And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were round about them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.

35:6

And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him,

35:7

and there he built an altar, and called the place El-bethel,[a] because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother.

35:8

And Deb′orah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel; so the name of it was called Al′lon-bacuth.[b]

35:9

God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.

35:10

And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So his name was called Israel.

35:11

And God said to him, “I am God Almighty:[c] be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall spring from you.

35:12

The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you.”

35:13

Then God went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him.

35:14

And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it.

35:15

So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel.

Rachel and Benjamin •

35:16

Then they journeyed from Bethel; and when they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel travailed, and she had hard labor.

35:17

And when she was in her hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Fear not; for now you will have another son.”

35:18

And as her soul was departing (for she died), she called his name Ben-o′ni;[d] but his father called his name Benjamin.[e]

35:19

So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem),

35:20

and Jacob set up a pillar upon her grave; it is the pillar of Rachel’s tomb, which is there to this day.

The family •

35:21

Israel journeyed on, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.

35:22

While Israel dwelt in that land Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

35:23–24

23 The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s first-born), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Is′sachar, and Zeb′ulun.
24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

35:25

The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naph′tali.

35:26

The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

The death of Isaac •

35:27

And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kir′iath-ar′ba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

35:28

Now the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years.

35:29

And Isaac breathed his last; and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

English notes: [a] El-Bethel: God of Bethel. [b] Allon-bacuth: oak of weeping. [c] El Shaddai: God Almighty. [d] Ben-oni: son of my sorrow. [e] Benjamin: son of the right hand / son of the south. Edition notes.

God’s explicit reason is to build an altar to the God who appeared during the flight from Esau (1). This recalls chapter 28’s encounter and vow and 31:13’s reminder. The command follows chapter 34, but its wording does not say the massacre is the reason.

“Go up” can describe ascending into the hill country; it does not mean the destination must lie north. The map shows broad movement, not an excavated road or exact burial location.

Put away the foreign gods •

The household surrenders foreign gods, purifies and prepares to travel
Genesis 35:2–5 • Renewed allegiance and protection

The whole household is told to remove foreign gods, purify themselves and change garments. They surrender idols and earrings, which Jacob hides under the oak near Shechem. This is a concrete break with rival religious objects, not merely a change of location.

Are these Rachel’s teraphim from chapter 31? They may invite comparison, but chapter 35 does not identify their owners or say which objects they were. It cannot prove Rachel still personally possessed those images. Nor does surrendering these earrings establish a ban on all jewellery.

Verse 5 explicitly attributes the surrounding towns’ failure to pursue them to terror from God. Compare Jacob’s fear of retaliation in 34:30. This protection does not reverse the later condemnation of Simeon and Levi’s violence in 49:5–7.

Why are the names repeated? •

Genesis 28 and 35 are compared as departure and return, vow and renewal
Bethel and Israel • Memory and reaffirmation
Names •
NameMeaning / role
House of God; named in 28:19 and recalled in 35:15 • ദൈവഭവനം; പഴയ പേരിടൽ വീണ്ടും ഓർമിക്കുന്നു
El-Bethel • ഏൽബേഥേൽGod of Bethel (35:7) • ബേഥേലിന്റെ ദൈവം
Israel • ഇസ്രായേൽName given in 32, reaffirmed in 35:10 • 32-ൽ ലഭിച്ച പേര് 35-ൽ വീണ്ടും ഉറപ്പിക്കുന്നു

The return deliberately recalls the earlier encounter. The repetition can be read as renewed commitment and public reaffirmation; it does not require a second unrelated town or an earlier naming being forgotten. Genesis also preserves repeated accounts and traditions, which should be read within the final narrative.

Jacob and Israel continue as names of the same person. Do not automatically label every occurrence of “Jacob” a spiritual failure or every “Israel” a moment of perfection. The name also becomes the ancestral name of the people.

12Land given to Abraham and Isaac, now to Jacob and his descendants •

Altar and pillar •

A low altar and separate upright stone distinguish two acts of worship
Genesis 35:1,7,14 • Details supplied and details left open

God commands an altar (1), and Jacob builds it (7). No dimensions, exact stone arrangement, named animal victim or complete sacrificial procedure are given. The illustration is a reconstruction, not a revealed architectural plan.

Verse 14 describes a stone pillar receiving a drink offering and oil. The drink’s liquid is not specified, so do not confidently name wine here. The supplied Malayalam places part of this action in verse 15; both wordings have been preserved above.

The pillar here recalls Bethel in chapter 28. Rachel’s grave marker later in verse 20 has a memorial function. The altar, worship pillar and grave marker should be distinguished by their use.

Rachel’s son and two names •

Jacob holds the infant with a symbolic midwife nearby; the two names are explained
Genesis 35:16–20 • Birth and bereavement
Names •
NameMeaningWho gives it?
Ben-oni • ബനോനിSon of my sorrow • എന്റെ ദുഃഖത്തിന്റെ പുത്രൻRachel • റാഹേൽ
Benjamin • ബഞ്ചമിൻSon of the right hand; also rendered son of the south • വലങ്കൈയുടെ പുത്രൻ; തെക്കിന്റെ പുത്രൻ എന്നുംJacob • യാക്കോബ്

Rachel dies following severe labour. Jacob’s motive for changing the name is not explicitly stated. Seeing hope or honour in the new name is a possible spiritual reading, not a quotation of his explanation. Neither name functions as a guarantee of the child’s destiny.

Rachel is buried along the road to Ephrath, identified in the passage with Bethlehem; she is not buried at Machpelah with Isaac and Rebekah. Modern identification of the exact site involves later traditions and should not be presented as proved by this verse alone.

Reuben’s misconduct •

Reuben, Bilhah and later consequences are explained without depicting sexual activity
Genesis 35:22–23; 49:3–4; 1 Chronicles 5:1–2

Reuben is Leah’s son and Jacob’s firstborn. Bilhah is Rachel’s maidservant and Jacob’s concubine, mother of Dan and Naphtali. Verse 22 records Reuben having intercourse with her and Israel hearing of it. Her consent and the full circumstances are not described; it should not be illustrated as romance.

No detailed immediate penalty is recorded here. Genesis 49:3–4 connects the act with Reuben’s lost pre-eminence. First Chronicles 5:1–2 distinguishes the birthright given to Joseph’s sons from Judah’s leadership. Do not transfer every firstborn privilege to Judah in one undifferentiated claim.

The list gathers the twelve sons by mother, rather than giving a strict birth sequence. Dinah is included in this study’s complete family view from 30:21. Verse 26’s Paddan-aram summary must be read alongside the explicit birth of Benjamin in Canaan in verses 16–18. It should not erase that exception.

The death notice closes Isaac’s story here, but narrative placement is not a dated account proving he died immediately after Jacob arrived. Genesis 27 also gives no direct age for Isaac in that blessing scene. Separate stated ages from chronological deductions.

Esau and Jacob together bury their father. Compare Isaac and Ishmael together burying Abraham in 25:9: a shared duty appears despite earlier divisions. The comparison does not tell us everything about the brothers’ later relationship.

Deborah, Rebekah and what remains unstated •

Deborah’s burial is distinguished from what is and is not recorded about Rebekah
Genesis 35:8; 49:31

Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, dies and is buried below Bethel. Allon-bacuth means “oak of weeping.” The chapter does not explain how or when she joined Jacob’s household. She is not Rebekah herself.

Did Rebekah never see Jacob again? Genesis narrates neither her death nor their reunion. Genesis 49:31 confirms her burial with Isaac at Machpelah, but supplies no reunion date. “They never met again” is therefore an inference, not a fact explicitly stated by Scripture. Do not call it a revealed punishment for the earlier deception.

Were all the idols Rachel’s? •

Owners are not specified; the whole household is addressed. •

Was Bethel newly discovered here?

No. The chapter recalls the earlier encounter and naming in 28.

Why still call him Jacob? •

Both names continue in the narrative for the same person. The wording alone does not diagnose his spiritual state.

Was the offering certainly wine? •

The liquid is not named in this passage. •

Does protection approve chapter 34’s violence? •

No. Read the protection alongside the later condemnation in 49.

Why did Jacob change Ben-oni? •

The name changes and meanings are stated; Jacob’s precise motive is not.

Does 35:26 mean Benjamin was born in Paddan-aram? •

The preceding birth account places him in Canaan. Read the summary with that explicit account. •

What must I put away to renew my commitment to God? Can I remember God’s faithfulness without denying grief? Do I distinguish the words Scripture gives from the stories I supply?

Prayer: Lord, renew our worship, sustain us in bereavement, and teach us to live faithfully with the promises you give. Amen.
