Dinah and Shechem •
34:1
Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land;
34:2
and when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humbled her.
34:3
And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob; he loved the maiden and spoke tenderly to her.
34:4
So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this maiden for my wife.”
34:5
Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his cattle in the field, so Jacob held his peace until they came.
34:6
And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
34:7
The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard of it; and the men were indignant and very angry, because he had wrought folly in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.
The proposals •
34:8
But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; I pray you, give her to him in marriage.
34:9
Make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
34:10
You shall dwell with us; and the land shall be open to you; dwell and trade in it, and get property in it.”
34:11
Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
34:12
Ask of me ever so much as marriage present and gift, and I will give according as you say to me; only give me the maiden to be my wife.”
The deceptive condition •
34:13
The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah.
34:14
They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.
34:15
Only on this condition will we consent to you: that you will become as we are and every male of you be circumcised.
34:16
Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people.
34:17
But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone.”
The city agrees •
34:18
Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor’s son Shechem.
34:19
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his family.
34:20
So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
34:21
“These men are friendly with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters in marriage, and let us give them our daughters.
34:22
Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised.
34:23
Will not their cattle, their property and all their beasts be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us.”
34:24
And all who went out of the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and his son Shechem; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
Retaliation and protest •
34:25
On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and came upon the city unawares, and killed all the males.
34:26
They slew Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
34:27
And the sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled;
34:28
they took their flocks and their herds, their asses, and whatever was in the city and in the field;
34:29
all their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and made their prey.
34:30
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me odious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Per′izzites; my numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”
34:31
But they said, “Should he treat our sister as a harlot?”

Shechem is both a city name and the name of Hamor’s son. Hamor is identified as a Hivite here. Do not confuse this household with Ephron the Hittite, who appears in Abraham’s purchase in chapter 23.
Where does it happen? •

Chapter 33 places Jacob’s camp near Shechem in Canaan, where he purchases land and builds an altar. Chapter 34 continues in this setting. The city is west of the Jordan, in the central hill country; the exact location of the assault is not stated. The illustrated town is a reconstruction.
Dinah goes to visit the women of the land. Shechem seizes and violates her (1–2). Her decision to visit does not excuse his act. The later description of his affection and marriage request must not turn the assault into a consensual romance.
In verse 26 Dinah is taken from Shechem’s house. This tells us where the brothers find her then; it does not identify the exact place of the initial assault. Her age, private thoughts and wishes are not supplied.
What happens next? •

| Stage | What the text records |
|---|---|
| 1–7 | Dinah is violated; the family hears •
| 8–12 | Hamor proposes marriage and shared settlement; Shechem offers gifts •
| 13–17 | The sons answer deceitfully and require circumcision •
| 20–24 | Hamor and Shechem persuade the men at the city gate •
| 25–26 | Simeon and Levi kill the males, including Hamor and Shechem, and remove Dinah •
| 27–29 | Jacob’s sons plunder and take women and children captive •
| 30–31 | Jacob protests; the brothers defend their response •
Hamor’s public proposal is broader than a marriage: it includes intermarriage, residence and trade. At the gate he also appeals to the prospect of acquiring the newcomers’ property (23). The city gate functions as the public setting for deliberation; we need not invent a modern legal procedure.
A covenant sign misused •

Verse 13 explicitly calls the sons’ answer deceitful. They present circumcision as a condition for marriage and becoming one people, while their later actions reveal a trap. Simeon and Levi attack on the third day when the men are suffering (25).
Circumcision was introduced as a covenant sign in Genesis 17. Here a religious sign is exploited to make others vulnerable. No divine command authorises this deception or attack. The narrative does not make this a model for religious conduct.
Distinguish the named attackers in 25–26 from the wider plundering described in 27–29. Removing Dinah from the house does not justify the killing, seizure of property or captivity of other women and children.
Was Jacob part of the plan? •

| Passage | What is stated |
|---|---|
| 5 | He hears and waits for his sons •
| 6–12 | Hamor comes to speak; Shechem addresses father and brothers •
| 13 | The sons’ answer is called deceitful •
| 30 | Jacob rebukes Simeon and Levi and fears retaliation •
The text does not say Jacob planned or authorised the massacre. His silence is not proof of consent, but the chapter also does not record a strong earlier intervention by him. We can discuss the difficulty of his response without pretending to know all his motives.
His objection in verse 30 centres on the danger and damaged standing of his household. The later words in Genesis 49:5–7 add an explicit condemnation of the brothers’ cruel anger. Both passages are needed for a fuller reading.
Dinah’s dignity and the question of justice •

Dinah’s speech and wishes are not recorded. We must not invent her consent to marriage, claim she welcomed the assault, or blame her for visiting the women. The narrative’s descriptions of violation concern what was done to her; they do not mean she loses her God-given worth.
Catholic teaching identifies rape as a grave violation of a person’s freedom, dignity and integrity (CCC 2356). Later affection or a proposed marriage cannot retrospectively supply consent. Ancient marriage payments in the passage must not become a modern recommendation that money or marriage resolves sexual violence.
Anger at the wrong is understandable. It does not make every chosen response just. The deaths, plunder and captivity broaden the harm to others. Care for Dinah and rejection of collective retaliation belong together.
The later judgment •

Genesis 34 ends with the brothers’ protest, not an explicit divine endorsement. In 49:5–7 Jacob condemns Simeon and Levi’s fierce anger and violence and speaks of their scattering. Read this alongside the unresolved ending here rather than celebrating the attack as righteous revenge.
Levi’s later priestly role does not retroactively approve this violence. The family’s story includes wrongdoing and later developments; being part of the covenant family does not make every action right. Chapter 35 continues with God’s call to go to Bethel.
Questions and answers •
Was the perpetrator Jacob’s son? •
No. Shechem is Hamor’s son; the shared name with the city can cause confusion. •
Was Dinah responsible because she went out?
No. Visiting the women does not justify Shechem’s assault. •
Did she agree to the proposed marriage? •
Her consent or refusal is not recorded. Do not supply an answer the text does not give. •
Did God order the retaliation? •
No divine command is recorded; the reply is explicitly called deceitful. •
Did Jacob plan it?
The text does not say so. Distinguish his waiting, the sons’ deceit and his later rebuke. •
Are Hamor’s people the same as Ephron’s household? •
No such identification is given. Hamor is called Hivite; Ephron in chapter 23 is Hittite. •
Does the Bible tell Dinah’s later life here?
No. Do not present later legends as the account of this chapter. •

Do I keep the person harmed at the centre of my concern? Do I confuse defending someone with defending my own reputation? Can I seek truth and justice without using anger to excuse further harm?
Prayer: Lord, care for those who have been violated. Teach us to listen, protect the vulnerable, reject deceit and seek justice without cruelty. Amen.
