Jacob and Esau meet •
33:1
And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids.
33:2
And he put the maids with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.
33:3
He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
33:4
But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
33:5
And when Esau raised his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”
33:6
Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and bowed down;
33:7
Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down; and last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down.
The gift •
33:8
Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?” Jacob answered, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”
33:9
But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.”
33:10
Jacob said, “No, I pray you, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God, with such favor have you received me.
33:11
Accept, I pray you, my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” Thus he urged him, and he took it.
Separate journeys •
33:12
Then Esau said, “Let us journey on our way, and I will go before you.”
33:13
But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die.
33:14
Let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Se′ir.”
33:15
So Esau said, “Let me leave with you some of the men who are with me.” But he said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
33:16
So Esau returned that day on his way to Se′ir.
33:17
But Jacob journeyed to Succoth,[a] and built himself a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
Jacob reaches Shechem •
33:18
And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram; and he camped before the city.
33:19
And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money[b] the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent.
33:20
There he erected an altar and called it El-El′ohe-Israel.[c]
English notes: [a] Succoth means booths. [b] Hebrew: a hundred qesitah; the exact value is unknown. [c] El-Elohe-Israel means God, the God of Israel. RSVCE edition notes.
Who walked first?

| Order | People | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jacob himself •
| 2 | Maidservants and their children •
| 3 | Leah and her children •
| 4 | Rachel and Joseph •
Jacob does not remain behind the family: he goes ahead, bowing seven times. The bows communicate deep deference in this encounter. The family arrangement reflects preference and vulnerability; it does not determine anyone’s dignity or justify treating some children as expendable.
The exact reunion site is not named. It follows the Jabbok/Peniel episode in chapter 32, but the text does not identify the meeting as taking place in Seir or at Shechem. A map must therefore mark a broad area rather than an exact point.
How Esau greeted Jacob •

Esau runs to meet Jacob, embraces him, kisses him and weeps with him (4). He calls him “my brother” (9), while Jacob continues the deferential language of “my lord” and “your servant.” The contrast is part of the emotional force of the scene.
The feared attack does not happen in the narrated encounter. We should not invent a secret change of plan or claim chapter 32 had proved Esau intended war. Here his actions reveal a generous welcome. Jacob acknowledges the children as gifts of God’s kindness (5).
Gift, blessing and the face motif •

Esau first declines the gift because he has enough; Jacob insists, and Esau accepts (8–11). Acceptance marks a changed relationship, but the story does not make forgiveness something that can be bought. Chapter 30–32’s wealth now becomes a means of seeking peace.
The Hebrew word behind “gift” in 33:11 is berakah, also “blessing.” The USCCB note sees a symbolic response to the blessing taken in chapter 27. This is a literary connection, not a formal reversal of Isaac’s blessing or a transfer of the covenant.
Jacob compares seeing Esau’s welcoming face with seeing God’s face (10), recalling Peniel in 32:30. Divine mercy and human welcome are linked through the language of “face.” Esau is not thereby identified as God or as a divine incarnation.
At the pace of the children •

Esau offers companionship and later an escort. Jacob declines, explaining the limits of the children and nursing livestock (12–15). His words support a reflection on patient leadership: the vulnerable should not be driven beyond their strength. This is an application of the passage, not a complete explanation of every motive.
Jacob says he will come to Esau in Seir, yet the narrated route goes to Succoth and then Shechem. The tension should be acknowledged. Do not invent a visit to Seir that this chapter never records. Reconciliation and distinct onward journeys coexist in the narrative.
The onward journey •

| Place | Location / role | Meaning or note |
|---|---|---|
| Seir / Edom • സെയിർ / ഏദോം | Esau returns south • ഏസാവ് തെക്കോട്ടു മടങ്ങുന്നു | Do not mark Jacob as arriving here • യാക്കോബ് ഇവിടെ എത്തിയതായി അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തരുത് |
| Succoth • സുക്കോത്ത് | Near the Jabbok–Jordan region, east of Jordan • യാബോക്ക്–ജോർദാൻ പ്രദേശം, ജോർദാനു കിഴക്ക് | Booths/shelters • കൂടുകൾ/കുടിലുകൾ |
| Shechem • ഷെക്കെം | Central Canaan, west of Jordan • മധ്യകാനാൻ, ജോർദാനു പടിഞ്ഞാറ് | Land purchase and altar • ഭൂമിവാങ്ങലും ബലിപീഠവും |
The map is schematic: exact meeting location, road and river crossing are uncertain. Read the route in verse order: Esau to Seir (16); Jacob to Succoth (17); then safely to Shechem (18). No travel duration is supplied.
Succoth is named for the shelters Jacob makes for livestock. Do not automatically identify it with the similarly named Exodus stop in Egypt, or claim this verse institutes the later Feast of Booths.
The land purchase at Shechem •

| Detail | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Buyer • വാങ്ങുന്നവൻ | Jacob • യാക്കോബ് |
| Sellers • വിൽക്കുന്നവർ | Sons/descendants of Hamor, father of Shechem • ഷെക്കെമിന്റെ പിതാവായ ഹാമോറിന്റെ മക്കൾ/സന്തതി |
| Property • സ്ഥലം | The plot where he pitched his tent • കൂടാരമടിച്ച പറമ്പ് |
The supplied Malayalam speaks of a hundred coins/pieces; the English says pieces of money. The Hebrew term is qesitah. Do not substitute “100 shekels,” assign a modern price or assume a particular minted coin. The passage concerns the camping plot, not ownership of all Canaan.
Shechem is both a place name and the name of Hamor’s son. The city was already mentioned with Abraham in Genesis 12:6–7. This purchase differs from Abraham’s burial-property purchase from Ephron in chapter 23.
Later connections include Joseph’s burial in the purchased plot (Joshua 24:32) and John 4:5’s reference to land Jacob gave Joseph. These connections enrich the location’s biblical history; they do not locate the exact altar archaeologically.

The altar’s name means “God, the God of Israel.” Israel here is Jacob, whose new name was given in chapter 32. Worship acknowledges that the God of his fathers is also the God whom he now confesses personally. The wording is sometimes rendered “El is the God of Israel.”
An altar is distinct from the upright pillar and stone heap in chapter 31. Compare Abraham building an altar at Shechem (12:7). Jacob has returned safely, but this is not Bethel; his return to Bethel and the renewal of that story follow in chapter 35.
| Name | Meaning / role |

Where exactly did they meet? •
The site is unnamed. The preceding setting suggests the Jabbok region, not an identified modern spot.
Did Jacob hide behind the family? •
No. Verse 3 places him ahead of them all.
Did the gift buy forgiveness? •
The text describes acceptance and generosity, not a formula for buying forgiveness. •
Was Esau God in disguise? •
No such identification is made. Verse 10 compares a gracious welcome with seeing God’s face. •
Did Jacob reach Seir here?
The narrated stops are Succoth and Shechem. His statement about Seir remains a tension to acknowledge. •
Was the price 100 shekels? •
The term is qesitah, whose exact value is unknown. •
Does safe return mean every problem is over?
No. The story continues, including a difficult chapter 34. Read this chapter’s peace without assuming a flawless household.
For today’s reading •
Can I take the first humble step toward peace? Do I recognise generosity in someone I fear? Do I move at a pace that includes the vulnerable? Do I turn relief and safe arrival into gratitude and worship?
Prayer: Lord, soften wounded relationships, give us courage to seek peace, teach us patient care, and turn our gratitude into worship. Amen.
