Angels on the journey •

32:1

Jacob went on his way and the angels of God met him;

32:2

and when Jacob saw them he said, “This is God’s army!” So he called the name of that place Mahana′im.[a]

Preparing to meet Esau •

32:3

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Se′ir, the country of Edom,

32:4

instructing them, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, ‘I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;

32:5

and I have oxen, asses, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.’”

32:6

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him.”

32:7

Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies,

32:8

thinking, “If Esau comes to the one company and destroys it, then the company which is left will escape.”

Jacob’s prayer •

32:9

And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who didst say to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good,’

32:10

I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.

32:11

Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and slay us all, the mothers with the children.

32:12

But thou didst say, ‘I will do you good, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”

The gifts •

32:13

So he lodged there that night, and took from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau,

32:14

two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

32:15

thirty milch camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten he-asses.

32:16

These he delivered into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on before me, and put a space between drove and drove.”

32:17

He instructed the foremost, “When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, ‘To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these before you?’

32:18

then you shall say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob; they are a present sent to my lord Esau; and moreover he is behind us.’”

32:19

He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, “You shall say the same thing to Esau when you meet him,

32:20

and you shall say, ‘Moreover your servant Jacob is behind us.’” For he thought, “I may appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”

32:21

So the present passed on before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.

The wrestling •

32:22

The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

32:23

He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had.

32:24

And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.

32:25

When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and Jacob’s thigh was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.

32:26

Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”

32:27

And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”

32:28

Then he said, “Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel,[b] for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

32:29

Then Jacob asked him, “Tell me, I pray, your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.

32:30

So Jacob called the name of the place Peni′el,[c] saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.”

32:31

The sun rose upon him as he passed Penu′el, limping because of his thigh.

32:32

Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh on the sinew of the hip.[d]

Name notes: [a] Mahanaim: two armies/camps; [b] Israel: he who strives with God / God strives; [c] Peniel: face of God. [d] The RSVCE note emphasises the mystery of this account. Read the edition’s notes.

Why approach Esau? •

Messengers, alarm at four hundred men, two camps, gifts and prayer
Genesis 32:3–21 • Fear prompts preparation and prayer

Jacob is returning to his homeland under God’s command (31:3). He seeks favour with Esau, the brother whose blessing he obtained through deception in chapter 27. This is a family relationship he must face as he returns; it does not mean God specifically commands every detail of Jacob’s strategy.

The angels who meet him in verses 1–2 are distinct from the unnamed human messengers sent to Esau in verses 3–6. The report of 400 men frightens Jacob; it does not disclose Esau’s actual intention. Their reunion is narrated in chapter 33.

Jacob does not hide his fear. He brings it into his relationship with God and recalls kindness already received. His reference to crossing the Jordan with a staff looks back to his earlier life; it is not a statement that he crosses the Jordan at this point in chapter 32.

What gifts did he prepare? •

Five animal categories show the exact gift quantities
Genesis 32:13–21 • The inventory and the spaced droves
Gift inventory •
AnimalsNumber
Female goats / male goats •
Ewes / rams •
Nursing camels • കറവയുള്ള ഒട്ടകം30, with their young • 30, കിടാക്കളോടൊപ്പം
Cows / bulls •
Female / male donkeys •

Total: 550 listed adult animals, plus the camels’ young. The number of young is not separately given, so 550 should not be presented as the total including them. Jacob puts space between droves and instructs the servants to repeat the same respectful explanation.

Calling Esau “my lord” and himself “your servant” expresses humility in this approach. The gifts seek acceptance; the passage does not say Jacob can purchase forgiveness or guarantee a peaceful response.

Where is Jacob? •

Schematic Gilead and Jabbok east of Jordan, with a separate Seir and Edom inset
The exact camp, ford and route remain uncertain

Jacob is in the Transjordan region associated with Gilead and the Jabbok, east of the Jordan. The Jabbok is associated with today’s Zarqa River. Seir/Edom, where the messengers seek Esau, lies farther south. The map distinguishes their destination from Jacob’s local movements.

Mahanaim and Peniel are shown as approximate regional locations. This is a schematic teaching map, not a surveyed itinerary or identification of the exact wrestling site. The reunion with Esau and the later journey into Canaan belong to the continuing story.

Names carrying the story •

Mahanaim, Israel and Peniel show encounter, identity and blessing
Names and narrative wordplay
Three names •
NameMeaning / connectionPassage
Mahanaim • മഹനായിംTwo camps/companies; angels meet Jacob • രണ്ടു പാളയങ്ങൾ/ഗണങ്ങൾ; ദൈവദൂതന്മാരുടെ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച1–2
Israel • ഇസ്രായേൽStriving with God / God strives; a new identity • ദൈവത്തോടുള്ള മല്ലിടൽ / ദൈവം മല്ലിടുന്നു; പുതിയ വ്യക്തിത്വം28
Peniel / Penuel • പെനുവേൽFace of God; encounter and preserved life • ദൈവമുഖം; സമാഗമവും നിലനിന്ന ജീവനും30–31

The explanations connect names with the narrative; possible etymological formulations vary. Israel becomes the ancestral name of a people, and the naming is reaffirmed in Genesis 35:10. Mahanaim’s “two camps” also echoes the chapter’s divided company, without requiring us to identify two literal angelic military bases.

Who wrestled with Jacob? •

Jacob wrestles with an unidentified figure at night; the teaching highlights persevering prayer
Genesis 32:24–30 • Catechism 2573

Genesis first calls the opponent “a man” (24), while Jacob names the place after seeing God face to face (30). Hosea 12 speaks of wrestling with an angel; verse numbering differs between editions. The narrative keeps a deliberate mystery around the encounter.

Does the Catholic Church identify him as Jesus? Catechism 2573 calls him a mysterious figure and teaches persevering prayer. It does not require identification as the pre-incarnate Jesus. Christological readings can be discussed as interpretations; they should not be presented as a settled identification taught by this paragraph.

Benedict XVI explains the paradox: Jacob receives blessing by surrendering and acknowledging his weakness. This is not a lesson that God lacks strength. The spiritual tradition reads the struggle as faith’s perseverance; blessing is a gift received, not something seized through superior force.

For comparison, chapter 27 describes blessing obtained through disguise; here Jacob states his own name and asks for blessing directly. This is a literary and spiritual comparison, not proof that every detail can be decoded as an allegory.

The hip, the limp and the sinew •

A touch, a limp and a dietary remembrance distinguish the events
Genesis 32:25–32 • Blessed amid vulnerability

The opponent touches Jacob’s hip and the joint is displaced (25). Jacob still holds on and asks for blessing; the touch does not immediately end the encounter. He leaves limping at sunrise. The text describes a dislocated joint, not a broken bone.

Verse 32 explains Israel’s custom of avoiding the hip sinew. It preserves memory of the encounter; it is not worship of a bone. This passage does not impose that dietary practice on Christians. The spiritual reflection on dependence must not become a claim that disability is proof of punishment or lesser faith.

Questions and answers •

Were the first angels the messengers sent to Esau? •

No. Divine angels appear in 1–2; human messengers are sent in 3–6.

Did 400 men prove Esau intended war? •

The report produces fear but does not state his intention; read chapter 33. •

Does prayer replace preparation? •

Jacob both prays and prepares. The chapter shows both together. •

Was the struggle simply a dream? •

The text does not introduce it as a dream. Its precise manner remains mysterious; Catholic teaching draws out its significance for prayer.

Why does the figure ask Jacob’s name? •

Naming leads to a new identity and blessing. Benedict XVI reads Jacob’s answer as self-disclosure and surrender.

Did God break a bone to escape? •

The passage speaks of a touch and displaced hip joint; Jacob continues asking for blessing. Do not add a broken bone or divine inability.

What happens next? •

Jacob’s meeting with Esau comes in Genesis 33. The suspense is not resolved here.

What relationship am I afraid to face? Can I name my fear honestly before God? Do I seek blessing as a gift? Can I recognise God’s care while remaining vulnerable?

Prayer: Lord, meet us in our fear. Teach us humble prayer, give us courage to seek peace, and transform us through your blessing. Amen.
