A promise for humanity and living creatures: the rainbow, the dignity of life, and the call to honour one another.
The Covenant With Noah •
Genesis 9:1–29 • ഉല്പത്തി 9:1–29
9:1
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
9:2
The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every bird of the air, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are delivered.
9:3
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
9:4
Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
9:5
For your lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning; of every beast I will require it and of man; of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.
9:6
Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for God made man in his own image.
9:7
And you, be fruitful and multiply, bring forth abundantly on the earth and multiply in it.”
9:8
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him,
9:9
“Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you,
9:10
and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark.[a]
9:11
I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
9:12
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:
9:13
I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
9:14
When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds,
9:15
I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
9:16
When the bow is in the clouds, I will look upon it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”
9:17
God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.”
Noah and His Sons •
9:18
The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan.
9:19
These three were the sons of Noah; and from these the whole earth was peopled.
9:20
Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard;
9:21
and he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent.
9:22
And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.
9:23
Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
9:24
When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him,
9:25
he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers.”
9:26
He also said, “Blessed by the Lord my God be Shem;[b] and let Canaan be his slave.
9:27
God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave.”
9:28
After the flood Noah lived three hundred and fifty years.
9:29
All the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.
What is a covenant? •

A biblical covenant is a solemn bond establishing a relationship through commitments and promises. Covenants can include obligations and a sign. In God’s covenants, he takes the initiative and reveals his faithfulness.
Noah’s covenant centres on God’s enduring promise; Genesis 9 does not make this promise dependent on humanity becoming sinless.
Who establishes it? • 9:8–9
God takes the initiative.
Who is included? • 9:9–10
Noah, his descendants and every living creature. The promise reaches beyond a single family or nation.
What is promised? • 9:11
No flood will again destroy all flesh and devastate the earth. This does not mean local floods or other disasters will never occur.
What is the sign? • 9:12–17
The rainbow marks the covenant. The passage explains its covenant significance; it does not establish when rainbows first existed physically. God’s remembering expresses faithful attention to his promise.
Is this the first covenant? •
The precise answer
Noah’s is the first divine covenant explicitly named in the biblical narrative. It is announced in Genesis 6:18 and developed after the flood in Genesis 9:8–17.
Some theological accounts also describe God’s relationship with Adam as a creation covenant. Genesis 1–3 does not explicitly call it a covenant, so distinguish that theological reading from the first occurrence of the word.
Read: Genesis 6:18; Catechism 54–58. God’s relationship with humanity begins before the explicit naming of Noah’s covenant.
Made in God’s image •

Life is a gift • 9:3–4
Meat is permitted, but flesh with its blood is forbidden. Blood is treated as a sacred sign of life. This passage should be read in its biblical setting, rather than used alone to settle later Christian dietary practice.
Human dignity • 9:5–6
Accountability for bloodshed is grounded in humanity being made in God’s image. Every person deserves respect regardless of age, ability, ethnicity or circumstances.
Catholic reading of verse 6
The verse’s words about bloodshed are preserved above. They are not a permission for personal revenge. Read them with Christ’s teaching and the Church’s current teaching: the death penalty is inadmissible (Catechism 2267).
Church reference: Catechism 2260–2267.
Noah’s family — respect and dignity •

Human weakness after deliverance
Noah plants a vineyard and becomes drunk. Ham sees and reports his father’s nakedness; Shem and Japheth cover him while looking away. The narrative shows that rescue from the flood has not removed human weakness.
For reflection: care for vulnerable people and avoid humiliating them. Protecting dignity does not mean concealing abuse or preventing someone from seeking help.
Why is Canaan named? • 9:24–27
Noah’s curse names Canaan, Ham’s son. The passage does not fully explain why Canaan receives it. USCCB notes discuss its connection with the later biblical portrayal of the Canaanites; other readings differ. Disputed explanations should not be presented as certain.
The text says nothing about skin colour. It provides no basis for racial superiority or racial slavery. The curse is spoken by Noah; it is not the covenant God has just established.

Noah and the creation blessing
Genesis 9:1 echoes Genesis 1:28. Reading Noah as a figure of renewed humanity is a literary and theological comparison.
No secret numerical code
The chapter supplies Noah’s ages but does not explain them as a hidden numerical message. Teach what the text states before offering symbolic speculation.
Catholic reflection •
God’s faithful care
The Catechism presents Noah’s covenant as a stage in God’s saving dealings with the nations (56–58). It invites trust in God’s faithfulness and care for the living world.
From promise to Christ
Christian reading places Noah within the wider salvation story. At the Last Supper, Jesus speaks of the New Covenant in his blood (Luke 22:20).
