GENESIS • CHAPTER 10 • BIBLE STUDY
The Nations of the Earth — One Human Family
Noah’s descendants spread into families, languages, lands and nations. Their names connect the family story with the wider ancient world.
Nations Descended from Noah •
Genesis 10:1–32 • ഉല്പത്തി 10:1–32
10:1
These are the descendants of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth; children were born to them after the flood.
10:2
The descendants of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
10:3
The descendants of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

From these the coastland peoples spread. These are the descendants of Japheth[b] in their lands, with their own language, by their families, in their nations.

10:9
He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.”
10:10
The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, and Accad, all of them in the land of Shinar.
10:11
From that land he went into Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah, and

10:21
To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born.

10:25
To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg,[d] for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan.
10:26
Joktan became the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,

One connected human family • 10:32
The chapter relates the nations through Noah’s family. It should not be turned into a three-race classification or a claim of ethnic superiority.
Every genealogy name — meanings and associations •
Some names have a clear lexical meaning; many are ancient people or place names whose original meanings are uncertain. The table distinguishes a meaning, a traditional proposal and an identification. A proposed meaning is not a proven description of a person’s character.
Includes Noah and his three sons, all descendant entries, and the Philistines mentioned in verse 14. Sheba and Havilah each appear twice because they occur in different branches. Rodanim/Dodanim and Egypt/Mizraim share entries. On a small screen, swipe the table sideways.

Ancient lands and peoples •

The chapter combines ancestry with peoples and places known in the ancient world. The map gives broad orientation rather than precise territorial boundaries or proven migration routes.
Mizraim is the Hebrew name rendered Egypt. Asshur also relates to Assyria; Javan is associated with the Greeks. Association with a place is not the same as translating the name’s original meaning.
Other geographical names in the chapter
Kingdom and cities: Babel, Erech, Accad, Shinar, Assyria, Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah and Resen (10:10–12).
Canaan’s boundary markers: Sidon, Gerar, Gaza, Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Lasha (10:19).
Joktan’s settlement markers: Mesha and Sephar (10:30).
These are geographical mentions, not additional children to insert into the genealogy.
Families, languages, lands and nations •

Families •
Related groups and shared ancestry.
Languages •
The speech of distinct communities.
Lands •
Places in which communities settle.
Nations •
Peoples belonging to the wider human family.
Nimrod and the early cities •

Nimrod’s short narrative interrupts the name lists. He is described as a mighty warrior and hunter and associated with a kingdom and city-building.
The supplied text places his early kingdom in Shinar and then describes his movement into Assyria. It does not state that he built the Tower of Babel. His precise historical identity is uncertain.
From Adam to Abraham •

- Genesis 5 • Adam to Noah
A genealogy follows a particular line through the pre-flood generations.
- Genesis 6–9 • Preservation, renewal and covenant
Noah’s family is preserved and receives a renewed blessing.
- Genesis 10 • The nations spread
The narrative looks outward across the branches of humanity.
- Genesis 11 • Babel and the line towards Abraham
A focused story explains scattering, then a genealogy follows Shem’s line towards Terah and Abram.
Key facts and careful reading •
Why seventy nations?
The table is traditionally counted as seventy nations. Counting excludes Noah and his three sons, retains repeated names in distinct branches and does not add every city or incidental people-name. A traditional total is not a count of today’s countries.
Peleg and division • 10:25
The verse itself connects Peleg with division. It does not identify a geological event or provide evidence for continental drift. Different interpretations of the division should remain clearly labelled.
Languages before Babel?
Chapter 10 surveys the peoples and their languages; chapter 11 provides a focused account of linguistic division and scattering. A literary reading need not assume every event in chapter 11 follows every detail in chapter 10.
A shared human family
Ancient groupings should not become modern racial hierarchies. The chapter’s family framework supports reflection on kinship across differences.

Rodanim in the supplied English corresponds to Dodanim in the Malayalam; Egypt corresponds to Mizraim. The texts phrase the Philistine connection differently in verse 14. These differences are retained in the verse text and explained without inventing extra descendants. The unprovided footnote markers [a]–[d] remain in the English scripture.
Catholic reflection •
The Catechism places the nations within God’s providential care after Noah’s covenant, then follows the call of Abraham (56–60). Acts 17:26–27 also affirms humanity’s shared origin and vocation to seek God.
Our reflection: difference of language or homeland does not erase another person’s dignity. God’s saving purpose reaches beyond our own community.
Prayer
God of all peoples, help us recognise one another as members of the human family. Teach us to honour different languages and cultures, reject prejudice and share your love with all. Guide us in faithfulness to your saving purpose. Amen.
Chapter summary •
English
Genesis 10 traces peoples through the descendants of Japheth, Ham and Shem. Its family lists include a short account of Nimrod’s power and cities and a wordplay on Peleg and division. Repeated summaries identify families, languages, lands and nations. The chapter presents an interconnected human world and prepares for Babel and the genealogy leading towards Abraham.
