Cain and Abel •
Genesis 4:1–26 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
4:1
[a]Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[b] a man with the help of the Lord.”
4:2
And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground.
4:3
In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground,
4:4
and Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,
4:5
but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
4:6
The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen?
4:7
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is couching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.”
4:8
Cain said to Abel his brother, “Let us go out to the field.”[c] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him.
4:9
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”
4:10
And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.
4:11
And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
4:12
When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
4:13
Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
4:14
Behold, thou hast driven me this day away from the ground; and from thy face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will slay me.”
4:15
Then the Lord said to him, “Not so![d] If any one slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who came upon him should kill him.
4:16
Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod,[e] east of Eden.
Beginnings of civilization •
4:17
Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
4:18
To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad was the father of Mehu′ja-el, and Mehu′ja-el the father of Methu′sha-el, and Methu′sha-el the father of Lamech.
4:19
And Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
4:20
Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle.
4:21
His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.
4:22
Zillah bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Na′amah.
4:23
Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, hearken to what I say: I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
4:24
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
Seth and Enosh •
4:25
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, for Cain slew him.”
4:26
To Seth[f] also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the Lord.
Two brothers, two offerings •

The narrative does not provide a full explanation for the different reception of the offerings. It does not condemn farming or declare plant offerings inherently unacceptable. Hebrews 11:4 highlights Abel’s faith.
Reflection: do I approach worship with trust and a willingness to live rightly, or compare myself with others?
Sin at the door: the moment of choice •

God warns Cain before violence occurs. The crouching image personifies sin as a threat to resist. Feeling anger and choosing to harm are not identical: the warning leaves room to act differently.
Practice: pause, name the emotion, pray, step away from confrontation and seek help before acting.
My brother’s keeper •

Cain’s denial invites examination of our responsibility towards others. As a Christian application, protecting life includes listening, practical help and refusing indifference.
The repeated divine questions connect with Genesis 3: hiding and blame give way here to denial after harm. This is a literary comparison across the chapters.
Judgment and protection •

Cain faces consequences, yet receives protection against retaliatory killing. The mark is not described and must not be equated with a race or skin colour.
Reflection: accountability should not become permission for personal revenge. Seeking safety and lawful protection remains compatible with rejecting vengeance.
Family lines and named people • വംശാവലിയും വ്യക്തികളും

| Person | Relationship / role | Verse |
|---|---|---|
| Adam and Eve • ആദവും ഹവ്വയും | Parents of Cain, Abel and Seth | 4:1–2, 25 |
| Cain • കായേൻ | Farmer; Abel’s brother; father of Enoch | 4:2, 8, 17 |
| Abel • ആബേൽ | Shepherd; killed by Cain; no descendants recorded here | 4:2, 8 |
| Cain’s wife | Unnamed; mother of Enoch | 4:17 |
| Enoch → Irad → Mehujael → Methushael → Lamech | The successive generations in Cain’s line | 4:17–18 |
| Adah • ആദാ | Lamech’s wife; mother of Jabal and Jubal | 4:19–21 |
| Zillah • സില്ലാ | Lamech’s wife; mother of Tubal-cain; Naamah is named as his sister | 4:19, 22 |
| Jabal • യാബാൽ | Tents and livestock | 4:20 |
| Jubal • യൂബാൽ | Lyre and pipe | 4:21 |
| Tubal-cain • തൂബൽക്കയീൻ | Bronze and iron instruments | 4:22 |
| Naamah • നാമാ | Sister of Tubal-cain; no further role specified here | 4:22 |
| Seth → Enosh • സേത്ത് → എനോഷ് | A new family line at the chapter’s close | 4:25–26 |
Enoch in Cain’s line is not the Enoch who walks with God in Genesis 5. Likewise, this Lamech is not Noah’s father. Similar names require attention to the family line.
Culture grows; moral choices remain •

City building, herding, music and metalwork appear alongside the story of violence. The chapter does not label these skills evil. A useful application is that cultural achievement needs an ethical purpose.
Lamech’s two wives are the first explicit instance of plural marriage in Genesis. Reporting the household does not establish it as an ideal.
Vengeance and forgiveness •

Lamech turns the language of protection into a boast of escalating vengeance. Jesus’ answer to Peter redirects attention towards abundant forgiveness. Translations differ between seventy-seven and seventy times seven in Matthew; the lesson is not a numerical limit.
Forgiveness does not require someone to remain in danger or prevent truthful reporting of wrongdoing.
Places and questions •
| Setting | What can be said |
|---|---|
| The field • വയൽ | The setting of Abel’s murder (4:8); no geographical name is supplied. |
| The ground • മണ്ണ് | Links farming, the victim’s blood and Cain’s judgment (4:2–12). |
| Nod • നോദ് | East of Eden (4:16); the name evokes wandering. It is not a securely identified modern location. |
| Enoch, the city • ഹെനോക്ക് നഗരം | Named after Cain’s son (4:17); no secure modern identification is given. |
Who was Cain’s wife? Genesis does not name Cain’s wife. Genesis 5:4 mentions other sons and daughters of Adam. A traditional Catholic explanation, found in St Augustine, is that the earliest generations married siblings or close relatives out of necessity. This is a traditional explanation, not a defined doctrine identifying their spouses, and it does not make such marriages permissible today.
Were there only four people? The narrative is selective, not a census. Cain’s fear and the city scene should not be used to invent an earlier separate human race.
Genesis 4 and notes • Genesis 5:4 • Traditional explanation: St Augustine (Catholic Answers)
Abel and Christ •

| Passage | Connection | Study emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 11:4 | Abel’s offering is interpreted through faith. | Worship involves the person approaching God, not only the material gift. |
| Hebrews 12:24 | Jesus’ blood is explicitly compared with Abel’s. | Christ is mediator of the new covenant; the comparison leads beyond the injustice suffered by Abel. |
| Matthew 18:21–22 | Jesus teaches abundant forgiveness. | A literary contrast with Lamech’s escalating vengeance, not a command to count offences. |
Hebrews presents Abel as a witness of faith and directly contrasts his blood with Jesus’ blood. In Christian reading, the comparison culminates in Christ’s saving work, rather than making Abel himself a saviour.
Seth and Enosh: a hopeful ending •
The chapter ends with another birth and calling on the Lord. This prepares the transition to Genesis 5. It is not proof that nobody prayed earlier: offerings and divine conversation have already appeared in the story.
Reflection, prayer and summary •
- Can I recognise resentment before it becomes harmful?
- Whose needs am I tempted to ignore?
- Do my skills serve people and peace?
- How can I seek justice without revenge?
Merciful Father, guard our hearts against envy and hatred. Teach us to receive correction, protect the vulnerable and accept responsibility. Through Jesus Christ, lead us from resentment towards truth, justice and peace. Amen.
Summary: Genesis 4 brings worship and responsibility together. Human achievement grows, but anger and vengeance demand moral attention. Judgment does not silence mercy; the ending opens towards renewed worship and the next generation.
