Genesis 16:1–16 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition

English

16:1

Now Sar′ai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar;

16:2

and Sar′ai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children; go in to my maid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sar′ai.

16:3

So, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, Sar′ai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.

16:4

And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived;[a] and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.

16:5

And Sar′ai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!”

16:6

But Abram said to Sar′ai, “Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sar′ai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

Hagar in the wilderness •

16:7

The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.

16:8

And he said, “Hagar, maid of Sar′ai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sar′ai.”

16:9

The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her.”

16:10

The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will so greatly multiply your descendants that they cannot be numbered for multitude.”

16:11

And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son; you shall call his name Ish′mael;[b] because the Lord has given heed to your affliction.

16:12

He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”

16:13

So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “Thou art a God of seeing”; for she said, “Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?”[c]

16:14

Therefore the well was called Beer-la′hai-roi;[d] it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

The birth of Ishmael •

16:15

And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ish′mael.

16:16

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ish′mael to Abram.

A promise, a plan and a divided household •

Three panels showing waiting a household arrangement and Hagar fleeing
Genesis 16:1–6 • The consequences of choices within an unequal household

Chapter 15 promises an heir; chapter 16 presents a household attempting to resolve childlessness through a human arrangement. Ancient Near Eastern customs help explain the setting, but do not make slavery or exploitation a moral ideal.

Responsibility involves more than one person: Sarai proposes, Abram agrees, Hagar shows contempt, and Sarai treats her harshly. Hagar’s dependent position must also be recognised. The narrative gives her no recorded voice in the initial arrangement.

Found and addressed by name •

Pregnant Hagar listening to the Lord’s messenger beside a spring
Genesis 16:7–10 • An interpretive depiction of the messenger encounter

The encounter moves the story from the household to the wilderness. Hagar is addressed by name and asked about her journey. She receives a promise concerning her descendants.

A Christian reflection: people who are socially vulnerable are not invisible to God. Our care should include listening to their own account, rather than treating them only as parts of someone else’s story.

Reading 16:9: the instruction to Hagar belongs to this particular narrative. It must not become a general command that a person should remain in abuse or avoid seeking safety and help.

Sarai’s husband and Ishmael’s father. He is still called Abram here; the name Abraham comes in Genesis 17.
Sarai • സാറായിAbram’s wife; she proposes the arrangement with Hagar. She is still called Sarai; Sarah is the later name in Genesis 17.
Hagar • ഹാഗാർEgyptian servant; pregnant, mistreated and encountered in the wilderness. The chapter gives her no parentage or age. Do not turn a proposed name etymology into an established fact.
Ishmael • ഇസ്മായേൽSon promised to Hagar and named by Abram.God hears / God has heard; the narrative links the name to Hagar’s affliction (16:11, 15).
El Roi • എൽറോയിHagar’s designation for the Lord who speaks to her.Commonly rendered God who sees; the Hebrew and the following sentence admit interpretive nuances (16:13).

The two naming moments reinforce the chapter’s central theme: Hagar’s affliction is heard and her encounter remembered. These are not claims that God has physical eyes or ears.

Was the angel of the Lord Christ? •

Some Church Fathers, including St Justin Martyr, interpreted certain Old Testament appearances as manifestations of the eternal Son before the Incarnation. Others understood an angel acting and speaking on God’s behalf. The identification in Genesis 16 should not be presented as settled Catholic doctrine.

Angel means messenger. In the first interpretation the title describes a mission, not a created angelic nature: the Son is divine, not a created angel. The illustration presents a messenger without deciding between the interpretations.

The passage moves closely between the messenger’s words and the Lord speaking. Its clear emphasis is God’s attention to Hagar and the promise she receives.

The ten years refer to residence in Canaan, not ten years since the previous chapter’s vision. The text does not date every intermediate event.

Reflection: waiting can expose fear and a desire for control. Trust should deepen responsibility for others, rather than justify decisions that disregard their dignity.

Ishmael: a named child with a future •

The promise concerns Ishmael before his birth. Verse 12 uses a wild-donkey image associated with wilderness life, alongside language of conflict. Translations differ over the final description of his relation to his kin.

Read the imagery in its ancient setting. It is not a warrant to label a modern ethnic or religious population violent by nature. Ishmael’s promised future and the later covenant line through Isaac must be distinguished without erasing either person’s dignity.

Hagar, Sarah and Christian freedom •

Hagar in Genesis and Paul explaining covenants and freedom in Galatians
Galatians 4:21–31 • Paul explicitly identifies his reading as an allegory

Paul draws on Hagar, Sarah and their sons in an allegory about two covenants, promise and freedom. Isaac’s birth belongs to the later Genesis narrative. Galatians addresses the situation of Christian believers and their relation to the law; it is not a simple retelling of Genesis 16.

Distinguish the original story from Paul’s theological use of it. Neither Hagar’s suffering nor her personal dignity should disappear behind the allegory.

Details worth noticing •

  • Names before and after: the messenger names Ishmael before birth; Abram gives that name after birth (16:11, 15).
  • Hagar’s voice: she answers the question and names the Lord in response to her encounter (16:8, 13).
  • Two wilderness episodes: in Genesis 16 she is pregnant and flees alone; in Genesis 21 she leaves with Ishmael. Do not merge the scenes.
  • A literary echo: Sarai takes and gives, and Abram listens. Readers may compare the wording of Genesis 3, without treating the situations as identical.
  • No unnamed details supplied: the chapter does not explain how Hagar joined the household or specify her age.

Reflection, prayer and summary •

  1. How do I respond when a promise seems delayed?
  2. Whose voice is missing from my decisions?
  3. How can I notice someone who feels unseen?
  4. Do I use my authority to protect another person’s dignity?

God who sees and hears, remember those who feel forgotten. Teach us patience without indifference, trust without control, and compassion that protects dignity. Guide our choices and help us hear the voices of those in distress. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summary: Genesis 16 brings the long wait for an heir into the realities of an unequal household. Hagar flees, is encountered in the wilderness, and receives a promise. The chapter invites reflection on patient trust, responsible power and the God who attends to suffering.
