The first sin •
Genesis 3:1–24 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
3:1
Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?”
3:2
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden;
3:3
but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
3:4
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die.
3:5
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
3:6
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.
3:7
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.
3:8
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
3:9
But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
3:10
And he said, “I heard the sound of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
3:11
He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
3:12
The man said, “The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
3:13
Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent beguiled me, and I ate.”
Judgment and promise •
3:14
The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
3:15
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head,[a] and you shall bruise his heel.”
3:16
To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
3:17
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
3:18
thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.
3:19
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
3:20
The man called his wife’s name Eve,[b] because she was the mother of all living.
3:21
And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.
3:22
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever”—
3:23
therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.
3:24
He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
How temptation unfolds •

The dialogue moves from questioning the command to denying the warning. The fruit attracts through food, beauty and the prospect of wisdom. A useful reflection is how something desirable can be pursued without trust or obedience.
The problem is not learning or wisdom itself. It is the choice to grasp at autonomy against the Creator’s command. Both the woman and the man eat.
Hiding, fear and responsibility •

God’s question invites a spiritual reflection: where am I in relation to God? The man blames the woman and refers to God’s gift of her; the woman points to the serpent. Recognising temptation does not remove personal responsibility. In Christian life, confession invites truthful acknowledgment and a return to mercy.
Original harmony is wounded •

Fear, conflict, painful toil and mortality mark the narrative. Work already existed in Genesis 2:15; the new emphasis is its hardship. The domination described in 3:16 belongs to wounded relationships and does not authorise abuse or erase equal dignity.
The first promise of redemption •

Catholic tradition calls Genesis 3:15 the Protoevangelium, the first announcement of redemption. It reads the promise in the light of Christ’s victory, with Mary associated as the New Eve. This is a Christian reading in the light of later revelation; the verse does not explicitly name Jesus or Mary.
Original sin: what the Church means •

Original sin is a fallen condition inherited with human nature, not a personal offence committed by each newborn. Human nature is wounded, not totally corrupted. Baptism remits original sin; human weakness and the inclination to sin remain. The Catechism recognises figurative language in the Fall narrative while affirming a primordial human fault (§390).
God’s care amid judgment •

The garments invite reflection on care that continues amid consequences. Judgment is not the end of God’s dealings with humanity. The verse describes clothing; a claim that this is the first sacrifice goes beyond what it narrates.
The guarded tree of life • കാവലിലുള്ള ജീവവൃക്ഷം

The closing scene concerns exclusion from the tree of life. The cherubim and turning flaming sword guard its way. The illustration is symbolic rather than a reconstruction of the garden’s architecture or location.
Unique details and common questions •
| Detail | Study point |
|---|---|
| The fruit • 3:6 | No species is named. An apple in art is an artistic convention, not a detail supplied by the chapter. |
| The added phrase • 3:3 | Compare the woman’s mention of touching with the command in 2:16–17. The narrative does not explicitly call that wording change a separate sin. |
| Both eat • 3:6 | Both humans participate. The chapter must not become an argument that women alone are responsible for sin. |
| Eyes opened • 3:7 | The promised gain leads into vulnerability, shame and hiding. |
| Explicit curses • 3:14, 17 | The serpent and the ground are explicitly called cursed; the humans receive judgments and consequences. |
| Eve • 3:20 | The woman receives the name Eve here, associated in the text with living humanity. |
| Garments • 3:21 | God clothes the couple. The verse does not narrate a slaughter, altar or sacrifice. |
| Dust • 3:19 | The return to ground echoes humanity’s formation from the ground in 2:7. |
Is the first sin sexual intercourse? The chapter describes eating against a command. It does not identify marital union as the forbidden act.
Adam and Christ •

| Genesis theme | New Testament | How to read the connection |
|---|---|---|
| Adam and the human plight | Romans 5:12–21 | Paul contrasts Adam’s trespass with Christ’s life-giving gift; grace surpasses the offence. |
| Adam and resurrection | 1 Corinthians 15:21–22, 45–49 | Paul contrasts the first Adam and the last Adam in his teaching about resurrection. |
| Temptation and obedience | Matthew 4:1–11 | A thematic comparison: Jesus remains faithful when tempted. This is not a claim that every detail directly repeats Eden. |
| The ancient serpent | Revelation 12:9; 20:2 | Later Scripture identifies the ancient serpent with the devil and Satan; Genesis 3 itself does not use those names. |
| Tree of life | Revelation 22:1–5, 14 | The Bible’s final vision returns to the tree of life and the removal of the curse. |
Romans 5 • 1 Corinthians 15 • Matthew 4 • Revelation 12 • Revelation 22
Reflection, prayer and summary •
- Where do I question God’s goodness?
- Do I accept responsibility or shift blame?
- Which relationship needs healing?
- Will I return to God with confidence in his mercy?
Merciful Father, bring us out of hiding and teach us to speak the truth. Heal the wounds of sin, strengthen us against temptation, and lead us through Christ into renewed communion with you and one another. Amen.
Summary: Genesis 3 traces distrust, disobedience and their consequences. It also leaves room for hope: God seeks, addresses and clothes humanity. Christian faith reads this chapter in the light of the redemption accomplished in Christ.
