At the well • കിണറ്റുകരയിൽ

29:1

Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the people of the east.

29:2

As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and lo, three flocks of sheep lying beside it; for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well’s mouth was large,

29:3

and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place upon the mouth of the well.

29:4

Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where do you come from?” They said, “We are from Haran.”

29:5

He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”

29:6

He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well; and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep!”

29:7

He said, “Behold, it is still high day, it is not time for the animals to be gathered together; water the sheep, and go, pasture them.”

29:8

But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.”

Rachel and the family welcome •

29:9

While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep; for she kept them.

29:10

Now when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob went up and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.

29:11

Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and wept aloud.

29:12

And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s kinsman, and that he was Rebekah’s son; and she ran and told her father.

29:13

When Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things,

29:14

and Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh!” And he stayed with him a month.

Jacob’s marriage agreement •

29:15

Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”

29:16

Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

29:17

Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful and lovely.

29:18

Jacob loved Rachel; and he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”

29:19

Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.”

29:20

So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.

The substitution and the marriages •

29:21

Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.”

29:22

So Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

29:23

But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her.

29:24

(Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.)

29:25

And in the morning, behold, it was Leah; and Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”

29:26

Laban said, “It is not so done in our country, to give the younger before the first-born.

29:27

Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me another seven years.”

29:28

Jacob did so, and completed her week; then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to wife.

29:29

(Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her maid.)

29:30

So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served Laban for another seven years.

Leah’s children •

29:31

When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

29:32

And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben;[a] for she said, “Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.”

29:33

She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard[b] that I am hated, he has given me this son also”; and she called his name Simeon.

29:34

Again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, “Now this time my husband will be joined[c] to me, because I have borne him three sons”; therefore his name was called Levi.

29:35

And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise[d] the Lord”; therefore she called his name Judah; then she ceased bearing.

English name notes: [a] Reuben: commonly “See, a son”; [b] Simeon’s naming echoes hearing, Hebrew shama; [c] Levi’s naming echoes joining/attachment, lawah; [d] Judah’s naming echoes praise, hodah. See the RSVCE notes. Compare the wording in 29:17 and31 across translations: uncertain eye language and “hated/unloved” are explained below.

Where is Jacob, and why is the well covered? •

Three stages show gathering at the covered well Jacob watering Rachel’s flock and family recognition
Genesis 29:1–12 • The watering routine and the meeting

Jacob arrives in the region of Haran, associated with Paddan-aram in northern Mesopotamia, the destination named in chapter 28. The shepherds say they come from Haran (4). The city is associated with Harran in modern southeastern Türkiye; this does not identify the exact well or Laban’s house archaeologically.

The well is not permanently sealed. Three flocks wait near it; the shepherds describe gathering the flocks, moving the large stone, watering and replacing the stone (2–3,8). Covering the opening and managing shared access are plausible practical considerations, but the passage does not explain every motive or give the stone’s weight.

Jacob moves the stone and waters Rachel’s flock. She is a shepherdess, actively tending her father’s animals (9). His kiss and tears accompany kinship recognition and the developing relationship. The well scene recalls Abraham’s servant meeting Rebekah in chapter 24, but the details and outcome differ.

How many children did Laban have?

Laban’s daughters Leah and Rachel and later mentioned sons are distinguished from maidservants Zilpah and Bilhah
Genesis 29;30:35;31:1 • What the text identifies
Who belongs to the household? •
PersonRelationship / role
Laban • ലാബാൻRebekah’s brother and Jacob’s maternal uncle.
Rachel • റാഹേൽYounger daughter and shepherdess (9,16).
Laban’s sons • ലാബാന്റെ പുത്രന്മാർMentioned later in 30:35 and31:1; no complete count or names supplied.
Zilpah • സിൽഫാMaidservant assigned to Leah (24).
Bilhah • ബിൽഹാMaidservant assigned to Rachel (29).

Two daughters are named here; the Bible does not give Laban’s total child count. Zilpah and Bilhah are not identified here as his daughters. “Laban son of Nahor” in29:5 uses ancestral language: Genesis 24:15 and28:5 identify Bethuel as his father. Do not invent another Laban because of this wording.

Why seven years—and in what order? •

First seven years Leah’s wedding bridal week Rachel’s marriage and seven more years are shown in order
Genesis 29:18–30 • Keep the bridal week distinct from the years of service

After a month in the household, Laban asks about wages (14–15). Jacob loves Rachel and himself proposes seven years of service (18). Catholic study notes explain the labour as bride-service connected with the customary marriage payment. The chapter does not prescribe seven years for every marriage or state that lack of cash was his only reason.

The actual sequence •
StageReference / explanation
First seven years • ആദ്യഏഴുവർഷംJacob serves under the Rachel agreement (18–20).
Wedding substitution • വിവാഹത്തിലെ പകരംവയ്ക്കൽLeah is brought instead of Rachel (21–25).
Leah’s bridal week • ലെയായുടെ വിവാഹവാരംThe week is completed (27–28), a seven-day wedding period.
Rachel received • റാഹേലിനെ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നുAfter Leah’s bridal week (28).
Seven more years • ഏഴുവർഷംകൂടിThe additional service follows (30).

Jacob does not wait fourteen completed years to marry Rachel. Love makes the first seven seem brief to him (20), but the work remains real. Ancient bride-service is not a modern Catholic marriage template, and the story should not be used to romanticise exploitation or treat a woman as a commodity.

Why the deception? •

Laban’s explicit explanation is the local priority of the older daughter (26). His arrangement also secures seven additional years of Jacob’s service. That economic benefit is evident; a complete account of his private intentions is not. A custom does not make the concealed substitution honest.

Nightfall and a feast are narrated. The passage does not say Jacob was drunk, give the women’s exact ages or describe every means of concealment. Leah’s and Rachel’s own prior knowledge, private motives and consent are not recorded. Do not make Leah the mastermind or assume their silence gives a full account of their freedom.

The deceiver is deceived •

Jacob’s impersonation in chapter 27 is compared with Laban’s substitution of Leah in chapter 29
The older and younger exchange roles in a narrative reversal

In chapter 27 Jacob presents himself as the older brother. In chapter 29 Laban substitutes the older daughter for the younger and invokes firstborn priority. Jacob experiences the anguish of being deceived. The contrast is a strong literary irony, not a statement that God commanded Laban to do wrong.

Leah’s eyes, rejection and dignity •

Leah is portrayed with dignity while uncertain eye language preference and God’s care are distinguished
Genesis 29:17,30–31 • Unloved, yet seen

What about Leah’s eyes? The Hebrew description in17 is difficult. Translations use weak, tender, delicate or dull, with differing interpretations. It does not establish blindness, a squint, a diagnosed disease or general ugliness. Rachel’s beauty is praised, but that does not justify disfiguring Leah in art or declaring her unworthy.

Why hated or unloved? Verse30 says Jacob loves Rachel more, followed by the description of Leah in31. Read together, these convey unequal affection and rejection in a divided marriage. Do not erase her suffering by calling it merely slightly less affection, or invent an explanation that she deserved it because of her appearance.

The LORD sees Leah’s situation and makes her fruitful. The emphasis is divine attention to the overlooked person. Her dignity does not depend on beauty or motherhood; Rachel’s infertility is not proof of divine rejection. Nor is this a promise that having more children will win an unloving spouse’s affection.

Leah’s children in Genesis 29 •

Leah and Jacob’s first four sons with naming explanations for Reuben Simeon Levi and Judah
Genesis 29:32–35 • This chapter’s children only
The four sons and their names •
SonMeaning / wordplayLeah’s explanationVerse
Reuben • റൂബൻCommonly “See, a son”; exact derivation debated. Seeing is central here. God has seen her affliction; she hopes her husband will love her.
Hearing; related by wordplay to shama. God has heard that she is unloved.
Levi • ലേവിAttachment / joining; linked to lawah. She hopes her husband will become attached to her after three sons.
Judah • യൂദാPraise / thanksgiving; linked to praise language. • സ്തുതി, നന്ദി.She praises the LORD.

These are naming explanations and wordplays, not equally certain dictionary derivations. The sequence moves from longing for a husband’s love towards praise of God, but it does not prove that all her pain has permanently ended:30:20 again mentions her hope concerning Jacob.

Only these four sons are born in this chapter. Leah has further children later, so the closing pause in bearing is not lifelong infertility. Do not add the later children to this chapter-only list.

Does the Bible approve polygamy? •

Creation the patriarchal narrative Jesus’ teaching and Catholic teaching on marriage are distinguished
Genesis 2:24;Matthew 19:4–6;CCC 1610,1645

A short explanation is important here. Scripture describes an ancient polygamous household, but description is not endorsement of every arrangement. Genesis 2:24 presents the one-flesh pattern; Jesus recalls the Creator’s intention in Matthew 19:4–6.

The biblical and Catholic distinction •
SourceTeaching
CCC 1610Moral understanding develops under the old law; patriarchal polygamy is not yet explicitly rejected there. This is not a claim that every patriarchal act is ideal.
Matthew 19:4–6Jesus recalls the creation pattern and the unity of marriage. •
CCC 1645Marriage calls for equal personal dignity and exclusive, undivided love; polygamy conflicts with that unity. •
Leviticus 18:18Later law specifically forbids taking a wife’s sister as a rival while she lives. Read its later legal setting; do not invent a contemporary trial of Jacob.
Deuteronomy 21:15–17The firstborn of an unloved wife is protected. Regulating an existing situation does not automatically make it the ideal.

The rivalry and unequal affection show wounds within this household. God’s care for its members does not make those wounds a model for Christian marriage. Modern Catholic marriage requires free consent; the ancient account should not be treated as a complete modern marriage-tribunal record.

Judah and Jesus • യൂദായും യേശുവുംMatthew 1:2–6 follows Judah’s line towards David and Jesus; Hebrews 7:14 identifies Jesus with Judah. Leah’s story belongs to the messianic family history. This does not approve Laban’s tactics.
Levi • ലേവിHis descendants later have Levitical/priestly roles. Jesus is from Judah, not Levi; do not merge the lines.
Leah’s burial • ലെയായുടെ സംസ്കാരംGenesis 49:31 names her burial at Machpelah. This does not narrate the resolution of every marriage wound.

Questions and answers •

Was Leah blind or ugly? •

Neither is established by the uncertain description of her eyes. •

Was Jacob drunk at the wedding? •

The text narrates a feast and nightfall, but does not state that explanation. •

Did he wait fourteen years to marry Rachel? •

No. Rachel is given after Leah’s bridal week; the additional service follows. •

Did Laban have only two children? •

Two daughters are named here; sons appear later. The total is unknown. •

Were Zilpah and Bilhah his daughters? •

They are called maidservants here. That family relationship is not identified in the biblical text. •

Did God order Laban to deceive Jacob? •

No such command is recorded. The narrative reversal does not justify wrongdoing. •

Was Rachel’s infertility punishment? •

The chapter does not establish that claim. Do not infer divine rejection from infertility. •

Are these all Leah’s children? •

No. These are the four sons born in chapter 29; further births are narrated later. •

Whose hurt do I overlook because someone else is preferred? Do I excuse dishonesty by calling it custom? Can I honour a person’s dignity without measuring appearance, usefulness or fertility? Can gratitude grow alongside an honest acknowledgement of pain?

Prayer: Lord, teach us to see those who are overlooked. Heal divided homes, guide us in truth and help us honour every person with faithful love. Amen.
