Genesis 28:1–22 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
Isaac sends Jacob •
28:1
Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, “You shall not marry one of the Canaanite women.
28:2
Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethu′el your mother’s father; and take as wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.
28:3
God Almighty[a] bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.
28:4
May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your descendants with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings which God gave to Abraham!”
28:5
Thus Isaac sent Jacob away; and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, the son of Bethu′el the Arame′an, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.
Esau marries Ishmael’s daughter •
28:6
Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he charged him, “You shall not marry one of the Canaanite women,”
28:7
and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram.
28:8
So when Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac his father,
28:9
Esau went to Ish′mael and took to wife, besides the wives he had, Ma′halath the daughter of Ish′mael Abraham’s son, the sister of Neba′ioth.
Jacob’s dream •
28:10
Jacob left Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.
28:11
And he came to a certain place, and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.
28:12
And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!
The promise at Bethel •
28:13
And behold, the Lord stood above it[b] and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants;
28:14
and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves.[c]
28:15
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you.”
28:16
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I did not know it.”
28:17
And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
Jacob’s response •
28:18
So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone which he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.
28:19
He called the name of that place Bethel;[d] but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
28:20
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,
28:21
so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God,
28:22
and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that thou givest me I will give the tenth to thee.”[e]
English edition notes: [a] God Almighty: Hebrew El Shaddai; [b] “above it” may also be read “beside him”; [c] “bless themselves” has the alternative “be blessed”; [d] Bethel means house of God; [e] the edition discusses Bethel’s sanctuary setting and possible temple-stairway imagery. Why does Isaac send Jacob away?
Isaac now knows he is blessing Jacob (1–4). He explicitly invokes Abraham’s blessing and sends him to his mother’s family. This is distinct from the concealed identity in chapter 27. God’s promise continues, but that does not approve Jacob’s earlier deception.
| Element | Meaning / reference |
|---|---|
| Do not marry a Canaanite woman • കാനാന്യസ്ത്രീയെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്യരുത് | The family instruction (1), linked with the earlier marriage concerns. |
| Go to Bethuel’s household; seek a wife among Laban’s daughters • ബത്തുവേലിന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു പോവുക | The destination is the maternal family in Paddan-aram (2). |
| Fruitfulness and an assembly of peoples • ഫലപുഷ്ഠിയും പല ജനതകളും | God Almighty is invoked (3); El Shaddai is also used in 17:1. |
| Abraham’s blessing and the land • അബ്രാഹത്തിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹവും ദേശവും | The covenant family promise is explicitly passed on (4). |
Two concerns frame the departure: escape from Esau’s threat (27:42–45) and marriage within the family (27:46–28:2). It is both a flight from danger and a family commission. The chapter does not give Jacob’s age or a complete travel schedule.
From where—to where?

| Place | Role | Meaning / importance |
|---|---|---|
| Beer-sheba • ബേർഷെബാ | Departure point (10). | Well of the oath / well of seven; familiar from chapters 21 and26. |
| Luz / Bethel • ലൂസ് / ബഥേൽ | Overnight stop and dream (11–19). | Bethel: house of God. Luz is the former city name. |
| Haran • ഹാരാൻ | Destination named in10. | Already part of Terah and Abraham’s story (11:31–12:5); associated with Harran in southeastern Türkiye. |
| Paddan-aram • പാദാൻആരാം | Region of the maternal family (2,5). | Often explained as plain/field of Aram; exact derivation is debated. A region around Haran, not simply a city or modern national border. |
Jacob travels from the southern family setting towards northern Mesopotamia. The arrival unfolds in Genesis 29; chapter 28 focuses on the departure and encounter on the way. Do not assign invented distances, travel days or exact paths to the illustration. Harran’s modern location does not establish every patriarchal encounter archaeologically.
Who is Laban? •

Laban is Bethuel’s son and Rebekah’s brother, already introduced in Genesis 24:29. He is Jacob’s maternal uncle and the father of Leah and Rachel. His name commonly means white; the meaning does not establish his character. His later role as host, employer and father-in-law develops in chapters 29–31.
The diagram includes Leah and Rachel to prepare for the next chapters; they are not already Jacob’s wives in chapter 28. The city Haran should not be confused with Abraham’s brother Haran simply because English uses a similar spelling.
Why not a Canaanite wife? •
Canaanites are peoples inhabiting the land of Canaan; the term can be broad and contextual. Genesis 10 already places them in the family-of-nations framework. Isaac’s instruction continues the marriage pattern in Genesis 24 and follows the grief associated with Esau’s marriages in26:34–35. Family continuity and religious allegiance are important interpretive considerations, but chapter 28 does not list every motive.
This is not proof of ethnic superiority or a universal Catholic rule to marry a relative. Nor was Abraham’s extended family automatically free of idolatry: Joshua 24:2 recalls other gods among his ancestors, and Genesis 31:19 mentions household images in Laban’s household. Kinship alone does not guarantee faithfulness.
Esau responds by adding Mahalath, Ishmael’s daughter and Nebaioth’s sister, to his existing wives (6–9). The chapter does not say that he dismisses his other wives or resolves every family tension. The emphasis is his response to what pleases his father.
What is the dream saying? •
Jacob dreams of a ladder or stairway rooted on earth and reaching heaven, with angels ascending and descending. The Hebrew word sullam is traditionally rendered ladder; stairway or ramp imagery is also discussed. Catholic study notes compare ancient temple stairways, without claiming an excavated structure or precise dimensions.
The encounter connects heaven and earth and assures Jacob that God is present with him. God initiates while he sleeps; his vow comes later. The narrative gives no named angels, step count or bodily description of the LORD. “Above it” and “beside him” are translation alternatives in28:13.
Jacob recognises a presence he had not perceived. God’s nearness precedes his awareness. The dream reassures him, but does not promise a life without trouble or offer a method for decoding every modern dream.

The assurance is addressed to Jacob in this covenant story. Christians may draw encouragement from God’s faithfulness without making every geographical detail a personal property promise. The word until in15 emphasises fulfilment; it does not predict that God will abandon him immediately afterward.
Is it the same promise? •

Isaac explicitly names Abraham’s blessing in28:4. The dust, stars and sand images express abundance; they should not be divided into separate biological categories. Continuity of promise also leaves room for Jacob’s need to grow in honesty and trust.
The dream and Christ •

In John 1:51 Jesus speaks of angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man. The Gospel deliberately recalls Jacob’s dream, as the Catholic biblical notes recognise. Christian interpretation sees communion between heaven and earth centred on Christ.
This is a strong textual connection, but it is not the same as saying Genesis explicitly identifies a bodily figure in the dream as the pre-incarnate Jesus. The artwork separates the two biblical moments. John 1:47’s description of Nathanael without duplicity also provides an interesting contrast with Jacob’s earlier deception.
Luz becomes Bethel •

Jacob names the place Bethel, not Isaac. Bethel means house of God: beth, house; El, God. The city’s earlier name was Luz (19). His naming responds to the recognition of God’s presence and his description of the place as heaven’s gate. No completed temple is built in this scene.

| Genesis 12:8;13:3–4 | Abraham worships nearby; the name appears before Jacob’s naming scene. • |

| Genesis 31:13 | The God of Bethel recalls the earlier encounter. • |
| Genesis 35:1–15 | Jacob returns, worships and receives reaffirmation. • |
| 1 Kings 12:28–33 | Jeroboam establishes a royal sanctuary with a golden calf. • |

Why does Bethel appear in Abraham’s story before Jacob names it? A narrator can use the later familiar place-name in an earlier story. Scholars also discuss related sanctuary and naming traditions. Neither explanation requires us to claim that28:19 is the name’s first biblical occurrence. A sacred history calls for present faithfulness, not confidence in a name alone.
Stone, oil, vow and tenth •

Jacob raises the stone and pours oil on it, marking the encounter. Such pillars belong to ancient sacred-place practice. Later biblical laws condemn pillars associated with idolatry (Leviticus 26:1;Deuteronomy 16:22); read the different settings carefully rather than making every ancient use identical.
His vow includes accompaniment, protection, food, clothing, peaceful return, allegiance to the LORD and a promised tenth. Its conditional wording has prompted differing interpretations: do not confidently reduce it either to a technique for bargaining with God or to a complete account of mature faith. God has already given the promise.
This is not the first biblical tenth: Abram gives a tenth to Melchizedek in14:20. Here it is Jacob’s vow, not a universal command that Christians must pay exactly ten percent to obtain protection. The chapter does not specify all details of how or to whom the tenth would be given.

| Detail | Study point |
|---|---|
| A knowing blessing • അറിഞ്ഞുള്ള അനുഗ്രഹം | Isaac names Jacob correctly and invokes Abraham’s blessing. This follows the concealed identity of chapter 27. |
| A vulnerable traveller • സുരക്ഷയില്ലാത്ത യാത്രക്കാരൻ | God initiates the encounter; the promise is not earned by a ritual. |
| Recognition • തിരിച്ചറിവ് | God’s presence precedes Jacob’s awareness of it. |
| God Almighty • സർവശക്തൻ | El Shaddai in28:3 connects with earlier patriarchal language (17:1). |
| The ordinary needs in the vow • സാധാരണആവശ്യങ്ങൾ | Food, clothing and safe return appear alongside worship and commitment. |
| An uncompleted journey • തുടരുന്ന യാത്ര | The destination matters, but the encounter occurs before arrival. |
| Art and text • ചിത്രവും വചനവും | Angels’ wings, clothing and the stairway’s exact appearance are artistic conventions, not complete textual descriptions. |
Questions and answers •
Who named Bethel? •
Jacob in28:19. Isaac sends and blesses him earlier in the chapter. • 28:19-
Is Bethel first mentioned here?
No. It already appears in the Abraham narrative; this chapter explains Jacob’s naming encounter. •
Is it a ladder or stairway? •
The traditional translation is ladder; stairway/ramp imagery is discussed. No exact construction plan is supplied. •
Was the LORD visibly pre-incarnate Jesus? •
Genesis does not specify that identification. John 1:51 supplies the strong later Christ connection. •
Did Jacob build a temple that morning? •
He sets up a stone pillar and pours oil; a completed temple is not narrated. •
Were Abraham’s relatives all faithful worshippers? •
Kinship is not a guarantee; Joshua 24:2 and Genesis 31:19 qualify that assumption. •
Did the tenth purchase God’s care? •
No. God speaks first; the vow follows. •
Does protection mean no suffering? •
Jacob’s later difficulties show that accompaniment and hardship can coexist. •
For today’s reading •
Where might God be present before I recognise him? Can I trust his faithfulness while a journey remains unfinished? Does my response to his gifts become gratitude and commitment rather than an attempt to buy security?
Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to your presence. Guide our journeys, deepen our trust and help us respond to your gifts with faithful lives. Amen.
