Genesis 27:1–46 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
Isaac’s plan •
27:1
When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau his older son, and said to him, “My son”; and he answered, “Here I am.”
27:2
He said, “Behold, I am old; I do not know the day of my death.
27:3
Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and hunt game for me,
27:4
and prepare for me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat; that I may bless you before I die.”
Rebekah and Jacob •
27:5
Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it,
27:6
Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speak to your brother Esau,
27:7
‘Bring me game, and prepare for me savory food, that I may eat it, and bless you before the Lord before I die.’
27:8
Now therefore, my son, obey my word as I command you.
27:9
Go to the flock, and fetch me two good kids, that I may prepare from them savory food for your father, such as he loves;
27:10
and you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.”
27:11
But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.
27:12
Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him, and bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.”
27:13
His mother said to him, “Upon me be your curse, my son; only obey my word, and go, fetch them to me.”
27:14
So he went and took them and brought them to his mother; and his mother prepared savory food, such as his father loved.
27:15
Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her older son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son;
അവള് മൂത്തമകന് ഏസാവിന്റേതായി, തന്റെ പക്കല് വീട്ടിലിരുന്ന ഏററവും വിലപ്പെട്ട വസ്ത്രങ്ങളെടുത്ത് ഇളയ മകന് യാക്കോബിനെ ധരിപ്പിച്ചു;
27:16
and the skins of the kids she put upon his hands and upon the smooth part of his neck;
27:17
and she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
Jacob before Isaac •
27:18
So he went in to his father, and said, “My father”; and he said, “Here I am; who are you, my son?”
27:19
Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your first-born. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that you may bless me.”
27:20
But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He answered, “Because the Lord your God granted me success.”
27:21
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.”
27:22
So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
27:23
And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.
27:24
He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He answered, “I am.”
27:25
Then he said, “Bring it to me, that I may eat of my son’s game and bless you.” So he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.
27:26
Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.”
The blessing •
27:27
So he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, “See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed!
27:28
May God give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine.
27:29
Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be every one who curses you, and blessed be every one who blesses you!”
Esau asks for a blessing •
27:30
As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
27:31
He also prepared savory food, and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.”
27:32
His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your first-born, Esau.”
27:33
Then Isaac trembled violently, and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all[a] before you came, and I have blessed him?—yes, and he shall be blessed.”
27:34
When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!”
27:35
But he said, “Your brother came with guile, and he has taken away your blessing.”
27:36
Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright; and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” Then he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
27:37
Isaac answered Esau, “Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?”
27:38
Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.
Words over Esau •
27:39
Then Isaac his father answered him: “Behold, away from[b] the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be, and away from[c] the dew of heaven on high.
27:40
By your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother; but when you break loose you shall break his yoke from your neck.”
The plan to escape •
27:41
Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
27:42
But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah; so she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself by planning to kill you.
27:43
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran,
27:44
and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away;
27:45
until your brother’s anger turns away, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send, and fetch you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”
27:46
Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women such as these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?”
Translation notes: the English markers [a]–[c] refer to the RSVCE edition notes. In 27:39, “away from” has “of” as an alternative reading. Some phrases fall across different verse boundaries: compare 27:28–29 and 27:45–46 in both languages. Read the adjoining verses together.
Who does what?

Rebekah hears Isaac’s instructions and directs the substitution. Jacob brings the goats, wears Esau’s garments and goatskins, and presents himself as Esau. His stated concern is that discovery might bring a curse (11–12). He nevertheless identifies himself falsely twice (19,24), and invokes the LORD to explain his quick success (20).
Both are active participants. Isaac and Rebekah’s preferences were already recorded in 25:28. The earlier oracle in 25:23 anticipates Jacob’s priority, but the text does not explicitly say Isaac had been told it. Do not claim certainty about his private knowledge or shift all responsibility away from Jacob.
God’s purpose continuing through this family does not approve their methods. Catholic moral teaching is clear: a good intention does not make lying good (CCC 1753). We may learn from the narrative without copying the deception.
Why did a spoken blessing matter? •

In this patriarchal setting, a father’s solemn blessing invokes God and articulates the family’s future: provision, fertility and priority. It is more than casual encouragement. The prayer begins by asking God to give (28), and Isaac affirms its lasting significance after discovery (33). Comparable family blessings occur in Genesis 24:60, 48 and 49; Deuteronomy 33 presents Moses’ blessing of the tribes.
This is not proof that spoken words have an independent force that controls God. Nor does the chapter supply a universal legal rule about every ancient blessing. Isaac speaks further over Esau (39–40) and knowingly blesses Jacob again in 28:1–4: he has not exhausted a limited store of spiritual energy.
Catholic teaching describes blessings as praise of God and prayer for his gifts (CCC 1671). Lay people may preside at certain blessings; others are reserved to ordained ministry (1669). Christian blessings are not identical to this inheritance scene. Do not infer that every angry parental phrase permanently fixes a child’s destiny.
Why does Isaac affirm rather than revoke the blessing? The narrator reports his affirmation but does not explain every inward reason. Recognising divine purpose in the outcome is a theological reading; it should not be presented as a verbatim account of Isaac’s thoughts.

| Peoples and nations • ജനതകളും രാജ്യങ്ങളും | Dominion reaching beyond the immediate household (29). |
| Priority among brothers • സഹോദരന്മാരിൽ മുൻഗണന | A position of leadership (29); descendants are also in view. |
| Blessing and cursing • അനുഗ്രഹവും ശാപവും | A formula echoing Abraham’s promise (29; compare 12:3). |
Where do the themes reappear? •

Not every phrase has one dated fulfilment. Some later passages develop the promise, some repeat its imagery, and some show a historical correspondence among the descendants. The table distinguishes these kinds of connection.
| Element | Later passage | Connection / limit |
|---|---|---|
| Dew, grain and wine • മഞ്ഞ്, ധാന്യം, വീഞ്ഞ് | Deuteronomy 33:28 | Poetic echo of provision for Israel, not a promise of wealth every year. |
| Fertile land • ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ഠദേശം | Genesis 28:3–4,13–15 | The land and promise continue; Abraham’s blessing is explicitly named. |
| Peoples serving • ജനതകളുടെ സേവനം | 2 Samuel 8:1–14 | Historical correspondence in David’s kingdom, not personal conquest by Jacob. |
| Priority over the brother’s line • സഹോദരവംശത്തെക്കാൾ മുൻഗണന | 2 Samuel 8:14 | Edom becomes subject to David; compare the two peoples of Genesis 25:23. |
| Blessing / curse formula • അനുഗ്രഹ–ശാപപ്രയോഗം | Numbers 24:9; Genesis 12:3 | A covenantal and literary echo, not permission for revenge. |
| Esau’s release from the yoke • നുകത്തിൽനിന്നുള്ള മോചനം | 2 Kings 8:20–22 | Edom revolts against Judah; subjection is not uninterrupted. |
An important limit: in Genesis 33:3 Jacob bows to Esau, not the reverse. The later descendants’ history cannot be flattened into a claim that Esau personally served Jacob every day. Genesis 49:8 also uses brother-bowing language for Judah; this is a later parallel.
Grain and wine are agricultural gifts here. They should not be labelled an explicit prediction of the Eucharist. Nor should dominion language become a simple formula about modern peoples or political rights.
Birthright, blessing and the promise •

| Passage | Event |
|---|---|
| Genesis 25:29–34 | Esau sells his firstborn privilege under oath. • |
| Genesis 27:18–29 | Jacob obtains Isaac’s blessing by impersonating Esau. • |
| Genesis 28:1–4 | Isaac knowingly blesses Jacob and explicitly invokes Abraham’s blessing. • |
The related-sounding Hebrew words for birthright and blessing contribute to the wordplay, but the events are distinct. Esau’s accusation in 27:36 should be read beside the earlier account of his agreed sale in chapter 25.
Rebekah’s offer to bear the curse •

Does a curse fall on Rebekah? The narrator does not explicitly pronounce one. Her words in 27:13 accept the risk Jacob fears; they do not establish a supernatural transfer of guilt or punishment. The recorded consequence is a family rupture and a plan for Jacob to leave to escape Esau’s threat.
| Text / question | Careful explanation |
|---|---|
| A short stay? | Rebekah anticipates a stay until anger subsides (27:44–45). Jacob later reports twenty years in Laban’s household (31:41). |
| Did she see Jacob again? | No reunion is narrated. “She certainly never saw him again” is an inference, not an explicit statement. |
| Her death • മരണം | Its circumstances, cause and age are not narrated. Genesis 49:31 mentions her burial with Isaac. |
| Genesis 35:8 | This is the death of Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse—not Rebekah. • |
It is fair to speak of the painful cost of manipulation. It is not fair to invent a revealed curse of illness, blindness or early death. The New Testament does not identify Rebekah’s offer here as a type of Christ bearing the curse.
How does Esau respond? •

Esau cries bitterly and asks his father to bless him too. His grief should not be dismissed because Jacob carries the promise. Isaac gives further words about his dwelling, the sword, service and eventual release (39–40). The RSVCE reads “away from” fertility and dew, with “of” as an alternative in its notes; do not force an unqualified reading from this difficult phrase.
The grief turns into hatred and an intention to kill Jacob (41). Injury does not justify murder. His story nevertheless continues: he embraces Jacob in 33:4 and says he has plenty in 33:9. Do not portray him as permanently penniless, incapable of generosity or outside every possibility of mercy.
Hebrews 12:16–17 uses Esau’s loss as a serious warning. Neither his tears alone nor this warning settles his eternal destiny. Christian readers must not conclude that God refuses forgiveness to every sincerely repentant sinner.
Unique details worth noticing •
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The senses • ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങൾ | Isaac checks voice, touch, food, kiss and smell. His impaired sight is exploited. The text describes no blindfold. |
| Clothes and goats • വസ്ത്രവും ആടുകളും | Garments and goatskins assist the deception. Genesis 37 later uses a garment and a goat in deceiving Jacob: a literary echo, not an explicitly assigned divine punishment. |
| Laban’s later deception • ലാബാന്റെ പിന്നീടുള്ള വഞ്ചന | Genesis 29 creates a reversal for Jacob. This does not make Laban’s wrong God’s command. |
| Isaac anticipates death • മരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആശങ്ക | He does not die here. Genesis 35:28–29 records his death at 180; his age in chapter 27 is not given. |
| Two departure motives • പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ രണ്ടു കാരണങ്ങൾ | Esau’s threat (27:42–45) and the marriage concern (27:46–28:2) frame Jacob’s journey. |
| The earlier oracle • മുൻഅരുളപ്പാട് | 25:23 anticipates Jacob’s priority but does not command deceit. |
| An apparent success with a cost • വിലയുള്ള വിജയം | The blessing is obtained; trust is broken and Jacob must leave. |

| Hebrews 11:20 | Isaac blesses both sons in faith regarding their future. Recognition of faith does not approve the deception. • |
| Hebrews 12:16–17 | A warning about loss and inheritance, not a licence to declare the eternal fate of a wounded person. |
| CCC 1753 | A good intention does not make lying right. |
| CCC 1669–1671; 2626–2627 | Blessing belongs to prayer and God’s gifts, not magical control. • |
Questions and answers •
Why did Isaac not simply revoke the blessing? •
The narrative affirms its lasting significance in 27:33 without explaining every private reason. Do not replace that silence with a universal rule of magical speech.
Was Rebekah punished by a curse? •
No such divine sentence is explicitly narrated. Separation follows, but an automatic curse transfer is not established. •
Could Isaac bless only one son? •
No. He speaks over Esau and later knowingly blesses Jacob. The specific priority already pronounced cannot simply be duplicated without contradiction.
Does God’s choice justify the plan? •
No. Providence and moral approval of each action are different. •
Did Esau bow to Jacob? •
Genesis 33:3 actually shows Jacob bowing to Esau. The later Israel–Edom history supplies a wider horizon. •
Did Rebekah never see Jacob again? •
No reunion is recorded; certainty about whether it happened goes beyond the text. •
Do parental words automatically control a child’s destiny? •
This chapter does not establish that claim. Christian blessing is prayer to God, not a spell. •
For today’s reading •
Am I trying to secure a good outcome through dishonest means? Do family preferences damage trust? Can I acknowledge another person’s grief without approving revenge? How can my words become truthful prayer and encouragement?
Prayer: Lord, teach us to trust your promise without manipulation. Heal broken trust and guide our words towards truth, mercy and peace. Amen.
