Famine and the promise •

26:1

Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar, to Abim′elech king of the Philistines.

26:2

And the Lord appeared to him, and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you.

26:3

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will fulfil the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

26:4

I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves:

26:5

because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

Isaac and Abimelech •

26:6

So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

26:7

When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister”; for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me for the sake of Rebekah”; because she was fair to look upon.

26:8

When he had been there a long time, Abim′elech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac fondling Rebekah his wife.

26:9

So Abim′elech called Isaac, and said, “Behold, she is your wife; how then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’”

26:10

Abim′elech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

26:11

So Abim′elech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall be put to death.”

Harvest and opposition •

26:12

And Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him,

26:13

and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

26:14

He had possessions of flocks and herds, and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him.

26:15

(Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.)

26:16

And Abim′elech said to Isaac, “Go away from us; for you are much mightier than we.”

The wells •

26:17

So Isaac departed from there, and encamped in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there.

26:18

And Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham; and he gave them the names which his father had given them.

26:19

But when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of springing water,

26:20

the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek,[a] because they contended with him.

26:21

Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also; so he called its name Sitnah.[b]

26:22

And he moved from there and dug another well, and over that they did not quarrel; so he called its name Reho′both,[c] saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

Beer-sheba •

26:23

From there he went up to Beer-sheba.

26:24

And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father; fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your descendants for my servant Abraham’s sake.”

26:25

So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

The peace agreement •

26:26

Then Abim′elech went to him from Gerar with Ahuz′zath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.

26:27

Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?”

26:28

They said, “We see plainly that the Lord is with you; so we say, let there be an oath between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,

26:29

that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.”

26:30

So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

26:31

In the morning they rose early and took oath with one another; and Isaac set them on their way, and they departed from him in peace.

26:32

That same day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”

26:33

He called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba to this day.

Esau’s marriages •

26:34

When Esau was forty years old, he took to wife Judith the daughter of Be-e′ri the Hittite, and Bas′emath the daughter of Elon the Hittite;

26:35

and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.

Name notes: [a] Esek: contention/dispute; [b] Sitnah: hostility/opposition; [c] Rehoboth: broad spaces/room. See the RSVCE edition notes. Shibah/Shebah and Beer-sheba carry oath/seven wordplay. Read adjoining verses together where a sentence crosses a verse boundary.

The repeated pattern is fear for one’s life and concealment of the marriage. The details differ, and the outsider ruler rebukes the patriarch. God’s protection does not approve the deception. A reflection on repeated family fears is appropriate; calling this a hereditary curse is not established by the chapter.

Catholic biblical notes discuss these as related wife-in-danger narratives. Comparison helps us read each account carefully rather than importing Sarah’s removal or a dream warning into Rebekah’s story.

Abimelech: name and identity •

Is this the same Abimelech? The text does not settle the question. A successor with the same name or a dynastic use is possible; some commentators propose a royal title. None should be presented as certain. Nor does the recurrence of Phicol’s name prove that the same two men appear in both generations.

Abimelech is commonly glossed “my father is king” or “father is king”; ancient names can carry additional nuance. Ahuzzath is the adviser/companion and Phicol the commander. The Abimelech in Judges 9 belongs to a different setting and is not this ruler.

Isaac’s age during this Gerar episode is not stated. Do not calculate an exact interval from Abraham’s encounter by assuming that every event in chapters 25–26 follows strict chronological order.

The promise becomes Isaac’s responsibility •

God’s promise to Isaac at Gerar and Isaac’s worship at Beer-sheba
Genesis 26:2–5,23–25 • Two appearances are narrated in this chapter

The LORD appears to Isaac in 26:2 and again in 26:24. Land, descendants and blessing for the nations continue the promise to Abraham. Isaac must respond in his own situation: remain where God directs and trust God’s presence. The chapter does not describe the physical form of these appearances or identify them as a visible pre-incarnate Jesus.

Verse 5 commends Abraham’s obedience in language of commands, statutes and laws. It should not be used to claim that the complete later Mosaic code had already been revealed in detail. At Beer-sheba, Isaac builds an altar, invokes the LORD, pitches his tent and has a well dug: worship, dwelling and practical work appear together.

A hundredfold harvest—and opposition •

Isaac sows and receives an extraordinary harvest (26:12). His prosperity is followed by envy and displacement. Blessing does not mean freedom from difficulty. The hundredfold return belongs to this narrated event; it is not a formula guaranteeing a hundredfold financial return for a donation or a measure of someone’s faith.

Why wells dominate the story •

Cutaway well with household livestock labour and settlement callouts
Genesis 26:15–22 • Access to water sustains life

In a dry region, reliable water sustains people and animals. Digging and maintaining a well takes labour; access helps a household remain in the land. Filling wells with earth threatens livelihood. The disputes are about real water rights and access, before we draw spiritual applications.

The springing water in 26:19 is fresh or flowing water, literally described with “living” language. It is not yet an explicit statement about eternal life. Nor does the text supply well depths, exact engineering specifications or a surveyed route.

Well of the oath / well of seven • ശപഥത്തിന്റെ കിണർ / ഏഴിന്റെ കിണർThe city name associated with the wordplay (33); already occurs in chapter 21.

The named sequence does not mean that Isaac dug only four wells in total. The old wells are also mentioned. Beer-sheba is the city name; Shibah is the name he gives the well in 26:33. Related naming accounts appear in chapters 21 and 26. Since Beer-sheba is already named in 26:23, do not claim that the place name first appears at the end of this chapter.

Rehoboth: what does it mean? •

Genesis 26:22 • Room to live and flourish

Rehoboth expresses spaciousness. After repeated disputes, Isaac recognises an opportunity to live and flourish without another quarrel. He keeps working and moving instead of escalating each dispute. This is perseverance, not inactivity.

A spiritual reflection may ask where we can make room for peace and trust. The name is not a guarantee of wealth or property. Nor is this well automatically Rehoboth-Ir in Genesis 10:11 or a modern town with a similar name. Its exact location should remain qualified.

What was the agreement for?

Isaac hosts Abimelech Ahuzzath and Phicol at a covenant feast
Genesis 26:26–33 • Recognition, agreement and peaceful departure

The delegation acknowledges that the LORD is with Isaac and seeks a sworn agreement against harm. Isaac provides a feast; they exchange oaths the next morning and part in peace. This is a human peace treaty, distinct from God’s covenant promise. Compare Abraham’s agreement in Genesis 21:22–34.

Isaac names their hostility openly (27). Their claim to have done him only good (29) is diplomatic speech; read it alongside the earlier expulsion and his complaint. Peace does not require pretending harm never happened. The report of water comes that day; the passage does not give a ritual formula by which a feast produces a well.

Who were the Philistines? •

Earlier Genesis references distinguished from later Iron Age Philistine archaeology
Biblical usage and historical context should be distinguished

This is not their first mention. Philistines already appear in Genesis 10:14 and 21:32–34. Later stories connect them with Samson and with Israel’s early kings.

Historically, Philistine culture becomes visible on Canaan’s southern coast around 1200 BC, with Aegean connections and interaction with local populations. The USCCB note on Genesis 21:32 describes the patriarchal usage as probably anachronistic: a later ethnic label for an earlier population. This is a scholarly explanation in Catholic biblical notes, not a separately defined dogma.

Ashkelon research, including ancient DNA, sheds light on migration and population mixing during the Bronze–Iron Age transition. It does not identify Isaac’s specific neighbours, excavate his treaty or prove which well was Rehoboth. Avoid simplistic links between ancient labels and modern identities.

Why end with Esau’s marriages? •

At forty, Esau marries Judith daughter of Beeri and Basemath daughter of Elon, described as Hittite in the RSVCE text. The marriages bring grief to Isaac and Rebekah and prepare for the family tensions that follow. The chapter does not state every cause of the grief or justify contempt for a people. Later wife lists contain differences; do not assume every name can be matched with certainty.

Matthew 5:9Peacemaking offers a natural comparison with Isaac’s conduct. This is a thematic reading, not an explicit citation of Genesis 26. •
Romans 12:18–21Seek peace where possible and refuse retaliation. It is not a command to remain in danger or excuse injustice. •
John 4:10–14Jesus gives living water leading to eternal life. Genesis 26:19 describes fresh spring water; the comparison is spiritual, and John’s well is Jacob’s well, not one identified here as Isaac’s.

Questions and answers •

Is this the same famine as Abraham’s? •

No. Verse 1 explicitly distinguishes it from the former famine. •

Was Abimelech definitely a royal title? •

No such removal is narrated here.

How many wells did Isaac dig? •

Several old wells and new wells are mentioned; a complete total is not supplied. •

Does Rehoboth guarantee prosperity today? •

No. It names Isaac’s particular experience of room without dispute. •

Was Beer-sheba first named here?

The name already occurs in chapter 21 and in 26:23. Read related naming traditions together. •

Can we identify these exact wells today? •

Proposed locations require qualification. A similarly named modern site is not sufficient proof. •
