Genesis 25:1–34 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
Abraham marries Keturah •
25:1
Abraham took another wife, whose name was Ketu′rah.
25:2
She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Mid′ian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
25:3
Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshu′rim, Letu′shim, and Le-um′mim.
25:4
The sons of Mid′ian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abi′da, and Elda′ah. All these were the children of Ketu′rah.
25:5
Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.
25:6
But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.
The death of Abraham •
25:7
These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, a hundred and seventy-five years.
25:8
Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
25:9
Isaac and Ish′mael his sons buried him in the cave of Mach-pe′lah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,
25:10
the field which Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife.
25:11
After the death of Abraham God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac dwelt at Beer-la′hai-roi.
Ishmael’s descendants •
25:12
These are the descendants of Ish′mael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maid, bore to Abraham.
25:13
These are the names of the sons of Ish′mael, named in the order of their birth: Neba′ioth, the first-born of Ish′mael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
25:14
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
25:15
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Ked′emah.
25:16
These are the sons of Ish′mael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes.
25:17
(These are the years of the life of Ish′mael, a hundred and thirty-seven years; he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his kindred.)
25:18
They dwelt from Hav′ilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria; he settled[a] over against all his people.
Esau and Jacob •
25:19
[b]These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac,
25:20
and Isaac was forty years old when he took to wife Rebekah, the daughter of Bethu′el the Arame′an of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Arame′an.
25:21
And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
25:22
The children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is thus, why do I live?”[c] So she went to inquire of the Lord.
25:23
And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples, born of you, shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger.”
25:24
When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25:25
The first came forth red, all his body like a hairy mantle; so they called his name Esau.
25:26
Afterward his brother came forth, and his hand had taken hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob.[d] Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
The brothers grow up • സഹോദരന്മാർ വളരുന്നു
25:27
When the boys grew up, Esau was a skilful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.
25:28
Isaac loved Esau, because he ate of his game; but Rebekah loved Jacob.
The birthright exchange •
25:29
Once when Jacob was boiling pottage, Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.
25:30
And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red pottage, for I am famished!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.[e])
25:31
Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.”
25:32
Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?”
25:33
Jacob said, “Swear to me first.”[f] So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
25:34
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils, and he ate and drank, and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Translation notes: markers [a]–[f] refer to the RSVCE edition notes. Wording differs notably in 25:18 and 25:22. English and Malayalam occasionally place a phrase on different sides of a verse boundary; read the surrounding verses together.
Keturah and the wider family •

Keturah has six sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. Jokshan’s descendants and Midian’s sons receive further detail. Some genealogical names also designate peoples or clans. These branches show the breadth of Abraham’s family before the story follows Isaac’s line.
The placement does not establish that this marriage occurred only after Sarah’s death. Genesis 25:1 calls Keturah a wife; 1 Chronicles 1:32 calls her a concubine, a secondary marital status. The narrative describes an ancient household; Catholic marriage teaching remains faithful, exclusive union (CCC 1644–1645).
Abraham gives gifts to the other sons, but Isaac is the principal heir (5–6). Their different roles in this story should not become a claim that other descendants lack dignity or that modern peoples can be neatly assigned to these ancient lists.
Abraham’s closing chapter •

Abraham dies at 175 and is buried beside Sarah in the property purchased in Genesis 23. Both Isaac and Ishmael bury him. Their presence is significant, but the text does not give a full reconciliation story. God blesses Isaac after Abraham’s death; the promise does not end with one generation.
A calculated overlap: Abraham was 100 when Isaac was born (21:5); Isaac was 60 when the twins were born (25:26). Abraham was therefore 160 then and died fifteen years later. The narrative does not describe his meetings with the twins. “Gathered to his people” is a traditional expression for death and joining one’s ancestors; it should not be turned into a detailed map of the afterlife.
Ishmael’s twelve chiefs •

Ishmael’s twelve chiefs recall the promise in Genesis 17:20. His lifespan is 137 years. The list closes this branch before returning to Isaac. These are not the twelve sons of Jacob, who appear later. Hadad/Hadar differs across textual traditions; follow the wording of the edition being read.
Why did Rebekah inquire of God? •

Isaac prays because Rebekah is childless. The ages establish twenty years between marriage and the twins’ birth. They do not establish twenty years of continuous prayer or reveal Rebekah’s age. This particular answered prayer is not a promise that every childless couple will conceive.

The children struggle within Rebekah, prompting her distressed question and inquiry of the LORD. The Hebrew wording is difficult, explaining differences between translations. Do not diagnose a medical condition or judge her faith from one translated phrase. The text does not specify a priest, shrine or method of receiving the answer.
The answer concerns two nations as well as two children: Edom and Israel. The younger receives priority in the promise. This is not a universal rule against firstborn children. Nor does the text say that Rebekah told Isaac the oracle; avoid filling that silence with certainty.
Two brothers, different paths •

Esau is reddish and hairy; the narrative links “red” with Edom and the stew. Jacob grasps his brother’s heel, giving a wordplay on his name. His later name Israel belongs to Genesis 32. “Jacob means liar” is an oversimplification, and Esau’s exact etymology should not be confused with Edom’s meaning.
Hunting and living among tents are different ways of life, not automatic moral verdicts. The word describing Jacob is translated quiet, plain or simple; it does not prove he is flawless. Both parents’ preferences are explicitly recorded. A useful reflection asks how favouritism can intensify division in a household.
What was sold? •

| Chapter | What happens |
|---|---|
| Genesis 25 | Esau sells the birthright under oath for a meal. • |
| Genesis 27 | Jacob obtains Isaac’s blessing through deception. • |
The birthright concerns firstborn standing and inheritance. Later Israelite law describes a double share (Deuteronomy 21:17), but the full later legal code should not be projected into this scene. The actual meal is bread and lentil stew (25:34), not hunted meat. Esau’s claim to be dying is his speech; the narrator gives no medical assessment.
The narrator explicitly criticises Esau’s disdain for the birthright. We can also reflect critically on Jacob’s use of his brother’s hunger. God’s choice of Jacob is not approval of every tactic. Neither brother should become a caricature of an entirely evil or entirely flawless person.
Name meanings and later connections •
Biblical names sometimes carry meaningful wordplay, but many ancient personal and tribal names have uncertain etymologies. The table distinguishes common glosses from proposals. These linguistic explanations are not separately defined Catholic doctrines. A repeated name does not automatically identify the same person.

| Place | Explanation |

| Beer-lahai-roi | Connected with Hagar’s encounter in Genesis 16; Isaac lives near it (25:11). Its precise modern location is uncertain. • |

New Testament connections •
| Passage | Connection and limit |
|---|---|
| Romans 9:10–13 | Paul cites the twins and the oracle in discussing God’s election. This does not excuse deceit or establish ethnic superiority. |
| Hebrews 12:16–17 | Esau warns against treating a lasting inheritance as expendable for immediate appetite. The later blessing belongs to chapter 27. Do not use this as a claim that God refuses forgiveness to a repentant sinner. |
| Hebrews 11:13–16 | The patriarchs’ life as strangers points towards a greater homeland. This is a wider thematic connection, not an explicit quotation of Genesis 25. |
Questions and answers •
Was Keturah certainly married after Sarah died? •
The chapter groups the family material to close Abraham’s story; its placement does not establish that exact chronology. •
Did Isaac pray for exactly twenty years?
Twenty years separate marriage and the twins’ birth. The duration of the prayer is not specified. •
Why was Rebekah distressed? •
The children struggled within her. She brought the question to God, who answered about two nations. •
Does the oracle justify Jacob’s later deceit? •
No. A role in the promise does not make every human action right.
Was the birthright the same as the blessing? •
They are related but distinct. The exchange is in chapter 25; the deceptive blessing scene is in chapter 27. •
Are these certain meanings of every name? •
No. Several are uncertain or disputed; the table preserves those limits. •
For today’s reading •
What lasting gift or responsibility am I tempted to trade for immediate comfort? Do I bring confusion to God as Rebekah did? Do my preferences create division? How can I honour another person’s dignity even when our roles differ?
Prayer: Lord, teach us to value your gifts, seek you in distress, and act with patience and fairness. Amen.
