Isaac and Rebekah: Faith, Character and God’s Guidance
A faithful servant, a generous response, a willing journey and the continuation of the promise.

The chapter at a glance •
Genesis 24 is the longest chapter in Genesis. Its 67 verses follow one mission from Abraham’s commission to Isaac’s marriage. The detailed retelling lets Rebekah’s household hear how the servant understands the encounter. Providence is recognised through prayer and ordinary acts of kindness, not a narrated visible appearance of God.

The servant’s commission •
24:1
Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
24:2
And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh,
24:3
and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell,
24:4
but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”
24:5
The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land; must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
24:6
Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there.
24:7
The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your descendants I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.
24:8
But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.”
24:9
So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.
Prayer at the well • കിണറ്റുകരയിലെ പ്രാർഥന
24:10
Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose, and went to Mesopota′mia, to the city of Nahor.
24:11
And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water.
24:12
And he said, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, grant me success today, I pray thee, and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.
24:13
Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.
24:14
Let the maiden to whom I shall say, ‘Pray let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac. By this I shall know that thou hast shown steadfast love to my master.”
Rebekah’s response •
24:15
Before he had done speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethu′el the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar upon her shoulder.
24:16
The maiden was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known. She went down to the spring, and filled her jar, and came up.
24:17
Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Pray give me a little water to drink from your jar.”
24:18
She said, “Drink, my lord”; and she quickly let down her jar upon her hand, and gave him a drink.
24:19
When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw for your camels also, until they have done drinking.”
24:20
So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.
24:21
The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.
24:22
When the camels had done drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel, and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels,
24:23
and said, “Tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge in?”
24:24
She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethu′el the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”
24:25
She added, “We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.”
24:26
The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord,
24:27
and said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the Lord has led me in the way to the house of my master’s kinsmen.”
Hospitality and the account retold •
24:28
Then the maiden ran and told her mother’s household about these things.
24:29
Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the spring.
24:30
When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.
24:31
He said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord; why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
24:32
So the man came into the house; and Laban ungirded the camels, and gave him straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
24:33
Then food was set before him to eat; but he said, “I will not eat until I have told my errand.” He said, “Speak on.”
24:34
So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.
24:35
The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and asses.
24:36
And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and to him he has given all that he has.
24:37
My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
24:38
but you shall go to my father’s house and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.’
24:39
I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’
24:40
But he said to me, ‘The Lord, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house;
24:41
then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’
24:42
“I came today to the spring, and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now thou wilt prosper the way which I go,
24:43
behold, I am standing by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, “Pray give me a little water from your jar to drink,”
24:44
and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’
24:45
“Before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Pray let me drink.’
24:46
She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.
24:47
Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethu′el, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her arms.
24:48
Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son.
24:49
Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”
The family responds; Rebekah is asked •
24:50
Then Laban and Bethu′el answered, “The thing comes from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good.
24:51
Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”
24:52
When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord.
24:53
And the servant brought forth jewelry of silver and of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments.
24:54
And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, “Send me back to my master.”
24:55
Her brother and her mother said, “Let the maiden remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.”
24:56
But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way; let me go that I may go to my master.”
24:57
They said, “We will call the maiden, and ask her.”
24:58
And they called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.”
24:59
So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men.
24:60
And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, “Our sister, be the mother of thousands of ten thousands; and may your descendants possess the gate of those who hate them!”
24:61
Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and rode upon the camels and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
Isaac and Rebekah •
24:62
Now Isaac had come from[a] Beer-la′hai-roi, and was dwelling in the Negeb.
24:63
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, there were camels coming.
24:64
And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel,
24:65
and said to the servant, “Who is the man yonder, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself.
24:66
And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done.
24:67
Then Isaac brought her into the tent,[b] and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
Translation notes: the English markers [a] in 24:62 and [b] in 24:67 refer to textual or translation notes. Compare the RSVCE edition notes. “Meditate” in 24:63 translates a difficult Hebrew verb; other versions use walking or prayer-related language. English and Malayalam sometimes place a phrase on different sides of a verse boundary; read the surrounding pair of verses together.
Who was sent, and for whom? •

The servant is not named in Genesis 24. He is the senior servant in charge of Abraham’s possessions. Readers often identify him with Eliezer of Damascus in Genesis 15:2, but this chapter does not confirm that identification. His opening self-description is simply “I am Abraham’s servant” (24:34).
| Instruction | Reason and outcome |
|---|---|
| Seek among his relatives, not the local Canaanite women (3–4). | Rebekah belongs to the family of Nahor and Milcah (15,24). The family requirement serves this covenant narrative; it is not a universal rule of ethnic superiority. |
| Do not take Isaac back there (6–8). | The promise concerns the land to which God brought Abraham. Rebekah journeys towards Isaac. |
| If the woman will not come, the servant is released (8). | The mission does not authorize forcing her to travel. |
| Trust God’s guidance (7,40). | The servant nevertheless travels, prays, observes, asks questions and gives an account. |
The oath under the thigh is an ancient solemn gesture. Commentators associate it with lineage and the seriousness of the undertaking, but its precise symbolism is debated. It is not a modern courtship practice to imitate. The servant also has other men with him (24:32,54,59).
What qualities does Rebekah show?

| Category | Text / evidence | How Rebekah responds |
|---|---|---|
| Family connection • കുടുംബബന്ധം | Abraham’s instruction, 3–4. | Bethuel’s daughter, of Nahor and Milcah’s family (15,24). |
| Beauty and virginity • സൗന്ദര്യവും കന്യകാത്വവും | The narrator’s description, 16. | Explicitly mentioned, but beauty is not the sign requested in the prayer. |
| Prompt kindness • തിടുക്കമുള്ള കരുണ | 18. | She lowers the jar and gives the traveller a drink. |
| Generosity • ഉദാരത | 19. | She volunteers to draw for the camels too. |
| Perseverance • സ്ഥിരോത്സാഹം | 20. | She continues until the camels have been watered. |
| Hospitality • ആതിഥ്യം | 25. | Fodder and accommodation are available. |
| Willingness • മനസ്സോടെയുള്ള തീരുമാനം | 57–58. | She answers that she will go. |
Abraham’s instructions, the servant’s requested sign and the narrator’s descriptions are different categories. Do not turn them into a modern beauty contest or a test of how much unpaid labour makes a woman worthy of marriage. Kindness, responsibility and generosity matter for both spouses.
Watering ten camels implies substantial service, but the passage supplies no exact litres, jar capacity, number of trips or hours. The important contrast is between a small request for a drink and her freely offered further help.
How did the servant confirm the way?

The servant prays (12–14), sees the response (15–20), watches quietly (21), asks about her family and lodging (23–25), and gives thanks (26–27). He then explains his commission and the encounter to her household (34–49). Their response (50–51) is followed by the question to Rebekah about going (57–58).
The story presents God’s providence through the encounter, not a technique for selecting a spouse by coincidence. Prayer does not cancel practical judgment, truthful conversation or personal willingness. Abraham speaks of an angel going before the servant, but no visible angel appears in the well scene.
The lengthy retelling lets the household assess the servant’s account. The narration and his speech are not mechanically identical: compare the ordering of the family question and jewellery in 22–24 and 47. Read the two presentations attentively rather than imposing an artificial word-for-word repetition.
Her name and family •

Rebekah / Rebecca represents the Hebrew name Rivqah. Its exact meaning is uncertain. A connection with a root meaning to bind or tie has been proposed. “Captivating beauty” should not be presented as an unquestioned literal translation, and her character should not be predicted from an uncertain etymology.
| Person | Relationship /
|---|---|
| Bethuel • ബത്തുവേൽ | Her father; son of Nahor and Milcah (24:15,24). |
| Laban • ലാബാൻ | Her brother (24:29). |
| Nahor • നാഹോർ | Her grandfather and Abraham’s brother. |
| Milcah • മിൽക്കാ | Her grandmother, Nahor’s wife; also Haran’s daughter (11:29). |
| Isaac • ഇസഹാക്ക് | Through Nahor, Isaac and Bethuel are first cousins; Rebekah is Isaac’s first cousin once removed. |
| Esau and Jacob • ഏസാവും യാക്കോബും | Her future sons, introduced in Genesis 25. |
Rebekah is first named in Genesis 22:23, preparing for this story. The diagram highlights the paternal route through Nahor; Milcah’s relationship through Haran makes the wider family more interconnected. Ancient close-kin marriage descriptions do not prescribe Catholic marriage practice today.
“I will go” • “ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു”

Rebekah’s family is involved, but she is asked whether she will go with the man. Her reply expresses willingness to leave in this arrangement. It should not be treated as a transcript of a complete modern sacramental wedding rite, nor should her voice be erased by saying the family alone decided everything.
Catholic teaching requires the spouses’ free consent (CCC 1625–1628). No family arrangement, gift or claimed sign from God can substitute for it. This application safeguards freedom while respecting the ancient setting of Genesis.
She departs with her nurse and female attendants, as well as the servant and his men (59,61). The nurse is unnamed here; Deborah is named as Rebekah’s nurse in 35:8. Having a nurse does not establish Rebekah’s age. The blessing in 24:60 echoes the descendants-and-gates language of 22:17.
A journey guided by promise •

| Name / detail | Study note |
|---|---|
| Mesopotamia / Aram-naharaim • മെസൊപ്പൊട്ടാമിയ | The region of the servant’s destination (24:10). More specific ancient geographical terms do not automatically establish a modern boundary. |
| City of Nahor • നാഹോറിന്റെ നഗരം | Its precise identification is debated. Do not automatically label it Ur or draw an exact route as certain. |
| The well / spring • കിണർ / ഉറവ | An evening setting for water collection and hospitality (11–27). |
| Beer-lahai-roi • ബേർല്ഹായ്റോയ് | Mentioned in connection with Isaac (62); recalls Hagar’s encounter in 16:14. |
| Negeb • നെഗെബ് | The southern region in which Isaac is dwelling at the close of the chapter (62). |
| Ten camels • പത്ത് ഒട്ടകങ്ങൾ | The stated caravan number (10); no exact travel duration or watering calculation is supplied. |
| Gifts and jewellery • സമ്മാനങ്ങളും ആഭരണങ്ങളും | Part of the ancient arrangement; not a modern rule for engagement rings, dowry or buying a woman. |
Love and comfort •

Isaac is forty at marriage according to Genesis 25:20; Rebekah’s age is not stated. The difficult Hebrew verb in 24:63 is rendered meditate, walk or with prayer-related language in different versions. Avoid deriving an exact prayer ritual from a disputed word.
Rebekah veils herself on learning who Isaac is (65); explain the gesture within its setting rather than making it a universal Catholic clothing rule. The ending explicitly says Isaac loved her and was comforted after his mother’s death. She is his wife, not simply a replacement mother or a guaranteed cure for grief.
Christian connections without forced symbolism •
Ephesians 5:25–32 gives Christians a framework of faithful, self-giving married love. John 4 is another important encounter at a well, but its purpose is different. Rebekah’s meeting should not be made a one-to-one code for Jesus and the Samaritan woman.
A father sending a servant to bring a bride can invite devotional reflection on Christ and the Church. Yet Genesis 24 does not explicitly identify this servant as the Holy Spirit or the ten camels as the Ten Commandments. Such suggestions are optional interpretive parallels, not defined Catholic teaching or the chapter’s plain statement.
Questions readers ask •
Was the servant certainly Eliezer? •
No name is supplied here. Identification with Genesis 15:2 is common in later interpretation but should remain qualified.
Should I ask God for exactly this kind of sign? •
The account narrates a particular prayer and providential encounter. It does not command readers to select a spouse by a test or coincidence. Prayer, wise counsel, character, compatibility and free consent belong together in responsible discernment.
Was Rebekah a small child? •
Her age is not given. Later age traditions are not an explicit biblical statement. The narrative depicts her drawing water, conversing, travelling and answering for herself; do not attach an invented numerical age.
Was the family completely free of religious problems? •
The kinship instruction should not become a claim that Abraham’s wider family was morally perfect. Later Genesis gives a more complex picture. The commission serves the continuation of the promise.
Does Laban’s welcome reveal his entire motive? •
He sees the jewellery before extending hospitality (29–31), a contrast readers may notice alongside Rebekah’s prior generosity. The narrator does not give every inner thought; avoid inventing them.
Did the gifts make Rebekah someone’s property? •
Read the gifts in their ancient social setting without reducing her to merchandise. For Christian marriage, neither payment nor family approval can replace the spouses’ free consent.
Reflection and prayer •
- Do I pray and also listen carefully?
- Can my ordinary kindness help another person?
- Do I respect another person’s freedom?
- Am I faithful to what has been entrusted to me?
Faithful God, guide our decisions with wisdom and love. Make us generous in small acts, honest in our responsibilities and respectful of one another’s freedom. Bless those discerning marriage, those who are single and all who serve quietly. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
