The Birth of Isaac •

21:1

The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

21:2

And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.

21:3

Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.

21:4

And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

21:5

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

21:6

And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; every one who hears will laugh over me.”

21:7

And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would suckle children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away •

21:8

And the child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

21:9

But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac.[a]

21:10

So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.”

21:11

And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.

21:12

But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the lad and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your descendants be named.

21:13

And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.”

21:14

So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

21:15

When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes.

21:16

Then she went, and sat down over against him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Let me not look upon the death of the child.” And as she sat over against him, the child lifted up his voice[b] and wept.

21:17

And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.

21:18

Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast with your hand; for I will make him a great nation.”

21:19

Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.

21:20

And God was with the lad, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow.

21:21

He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

Abraham and Abimelech Make a Covenant •

21:22

At that time Abim′elech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do;

21:23

now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but as I have dealt loyally with you, you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.”

21:24

And Abraham said, “I will swear.”

21:25

When Abraham complained to Abim′elech about a well of water which Abim′elech’s servants had seized,

21:26

Abim′elech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.”

21:27

So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abim′elech, and the two men made a covenant.

21:28

Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.

21:29

And Abim′elech said to Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set apart?”

21:30

He said, “These seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand, that you may be a witness for me that I dug this well.”

21:31

Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba;[c] because there both of them swore an oath.

21:32

So they made a covenant at Beer-sheba. Then Abim′elech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

21:33

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.

21:34

And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.

Translation notes: [a] The wording concerning playing with Isaac varies across textual witnesses and translations. [b] Some textual traditions read that she, rather than the child, wept. [c] Beer-sheba is associated with the well, the oath and the seven lambs. See the study notes below.

From waiting to fulfilment •

Abraham and Sarah’s earlier laughter becomes joy at Isaac’s birth
Genesis 17:17; 18:12; 21:6 • The laughter theme

Isaac means “he laughs.” God specifies the name before the birth (17:19). Abraham laughs in 17:17, Sarah laughs in 18:12, and Sarah speaks of shared laughter after the birth in 21:6. The repeated word becomes a thread of surprise and joy.

The Lord “visited” Sarah means that he acted for her in fulfilment of his promise; this verse does not describe another visible visitor at the tent. Isaac is circumcised on the eighth day in obedience to Genesis 17.

The feast celebrates weaning, a further stage in the child’s growth. No exact weaning age is stated. A Christian reflection on waiting should not become a guarantee that every couple experiencing infertility will receive a child in the same way.

Associated in 17:5 with father of a multitude • അനവധി ജനതകളുടെ പിതാവ്The biblical explanation expresses his vocation; avoid treating it as a simple word-for-word linguistic derivation.

In Scripture a name may remember an event, express faith, mark belonging or accompany a new mission: Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 17), Israel (32:28), and Jesus (Matthew 1:21). Not every biblical name has a certain etymology, and a name does not mechanically determine character or destiny.

Catholic teaching also values the personal name received at Baptism: God calls each person by name (CCC 2156–2158). This is about personal dignity and Christian belonging, not numerology or magical power.

God hears beyond the camp •

Hagar discovers water while adolescent Ishmael rests in the wilderness
Genesis 21:14–21 • God hears and provides

God’s care reaches the mother and son beyond Abraham’s camp. The rescue involves a voice heard, reassurance, renewed responsibility and water. Hagar must rise and help her son; the opened eyes lead to practical action.

In Genesis 16 Hagar is pregnant and alone near the road to Shur. Here she is with her son in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. These are distinct episodes connected by God’s attention to distress.

Ishmael was fourteen when Isaac was born, calculated from Abraham’s ages in 16:16 and 21:5. He is older still at the weaning feast. The narrative’s tender language for him should not automatically make him a baby in illustrations.

The separation is painful, and Abraham’s distress is explicit. The account does not authorize the abandonment of vulnerable mothers and children. God’s promise through Isaac and his care for Ishmael must both be heard.

Abraham’s sons through Sarah and Hagar and their distinct roles
Genesis 17:19–21; 21:13,18; 25:9,12–18 • Distinct paths

Later, Genesis 25 names Ishmael’s twelve sons as tribal chiefs and records his lifespan as 137 years. Isaac and Ishmael together bury Abraham (25:9). The later burial illustration is symbolic; both sons were mature adults at that time.

The text does not present Ishmael as forgotten or simply cursed. His descendants receive a future, while the covenant line is established through Isaac. These ancient genealogies should not be used to assign moral character to present-day ethnic or religious communities.

Peace, an oath and a well • സമാധാനവും ശപഥവും കിണറും

Abraham and Abimelech settle the well dispute with seven ewe lambs as witnesses
Genesis 21:22–32 • Truthful dealings and recognition of the well
The agreement explained •
QuestionAnswer / ഉത്തരം
Why seek an oath?Abimelech recognizes God’s help and asks for honest, loyal dealings with him and his descendants (22–23). •
What was disputed?A well seized by the king’s servants; Abimelech says he had not known of it (25–26).
Why seven ewe lambs?Their acceptance witnesses Abraham’s claim that he dug the well (28–30).
Were the lambs sacrificed? No sacrifice of these lambs is described. •
Is this God’s covenant with Abraham? This is a human agreement between Abraham and Abimelech, distinct from God’s covenant in chapters 15 and 17.

The request not to deal falsely gains force after chapter 20, where Abraham’s concealment caused a crisis. Peace now calls for truthful commitments and a concrete resolution of a resource dispute. The king’s commander Phicol is present; he is not another king.

Water meant survival for households and herds. The well therefore matters economically and socially, not merely as scenery. The chapter ends with a place to live and worship rather than another conflict.

Paul explicitly reads Sarah and Hagar allegorically in Galatians 4:21–31 to teach about promise and freedom. His argument is not a modern racial classification or a judgment on the worth of Ishmael’s descendants. Read it within his appeal to live in the freedom Christ gives.

Romans 9:7–9 also draws on Isaac’s birth to discuss the children of promise. Hebrews 11:11–12 recalls faith and the surprising gift of descendants. These Christian readings deepen the promise theme while the Genesis story retains its human grief and concrete setting.

Questions readers ask •

Was Ishmael attacking Isaac?

The supplied translation says playing. Other translations use mocking; the Hebrew laughter-related wording is debated. Verse 9 alone does not establish a physical or sexual assault. Sarah’s stated concern is inheritance (21:10).

Did God create a well at that moment?

The text says God opened Hagar’s eyes and she saw a well. It does not explicitly state that the well was newly created.

Why does God allow the separation?

The narrative links the decision to the promise through Isaac and immediately affirms a future for Ishmael. It does not answer every moral question about the household’s actions. God’s rescue directs our attention to the vulnerable rather than giving permission to mistreat them.

Is the angel of God necessarily the pre-incarnate Jesus?

The messenger speaks with divine authority, but this chapter does not identify him as Jesus. Catholic readers need not treat that identification as a defined teaching; it belongs to a history of theological interpretations.

Can we identify the exact well today?

This passage does not establish a particular surviving well as Abraham’s own. Distinguish the biblical place-name and later sites associated with it from proof of this particular event.

Reflection and prayer •

  1. Can I rejoice in another person’s joy?
  2. Whose distress am I failing to hear?
  3. What practical help can I offer today?
  4. Does peace require an honest conversation about a dispute?

Everlasting God, teach us to trust your faithfulness, rejoice with those who rejoice, and hear those who cry. Open our eyes to the help we can give. Make us truthful in our promises and generous in seeking peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
