Genesis 20:1–18 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition

English

20:1

From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar.

20:2

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abim′elech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

20:3

But God came to Abim′elech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man’s wife.”

20:4

Now Abim′elech had not approached her; so he said, “Lord, wilt thou slay an innocent people?

20:5

Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.”

20:6

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

20:7

Now then restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours.”

20:8

So Abim′elech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told them all these things; and the men were very much afraid.

20:9

Then Abim′elech called Abraham, and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.”

20:10

And Abim′elech said to Abraham, “What were you thinking of, that you did this thing?”

20:11

Abraham said, “I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.

20:12

Besides she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

20:13

And when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.’”

20:14

Then Abim′elech took sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him.

20:15

And Abim′elech said, “Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.”

20:16

To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; it is your vindication in the eyes of all who are with you; and before every one you are righted.”

20:17

Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abim′elech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children.

20:18

For the Lord had closed all the wombs of the house of Abim′elech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

Common ground with earlier and later stories •

Comparison of Abram in Egypt Abraham in Gerar and Isaac with Rebekah
Genesis 12, 20 and 26 • A repeated narrative pattern with distinct details
Related episodes, different details •
PassagePeople / settingDistinctive details
Genesis 12:10–20Abram, Sarai and Pharaoh; Egypt.Famine prompts the move. Sarai is taken, plagues follow and Pharaoh sends them away.
Genesis 20:1–18Abraham, Sarah and Abimelech; Gerar.A dream warns the king; Sarah is restored; Abraham prays and the household is healed.
Genesis 26:6–11Isaac, Rebekah and Abimelech; Gerar. The marriage is discovered through Isaac’s behaviour towards Rebekah. She is not taken into the royal household; a protective decree follows.

The shared wife–sister pattern invites comparison, while differences should remain visible. Catholic biblical notes also discuss these accounts as related literary traditions. That scholarly observation is distinct from a claim that every detail must be identical.

A spiritual reflection: earlier experiences of God do not automatically remove an unresolved weakness. Repeated fear calls for honesty and change.

A warning that calls for action •

Abimelech sleeping with symbolic light and cards explaining warning and response
Genesis 20:3–7 • The artwork symbolises a dream without depicting God in human form

God addresses the foreign king directly. Abimelech pleads that he acted without knowing the marriage; God acknowledges his integrity while requiring Sarah’s return. Innocent intention does not remove the need to correct a harmful situation once the truth is known.

The warning is conditional: return her and live. The king responds early the next morning. The narrative describes this dream as a divine communication; it does not teach that every dream is a message from God.

Fear, concealment and accountability •

Abraham fearful the marriage concealed and accountability before Abimelech
Genesis 20:9–13 • A statement can contain truth and still mislead

Abraham says he expected no fear of God in Gerar. Yet Abimelech listens to God and challenges Abraham’s conduct. The contrast warns against assuming that outsiders have no moral seriousness.

Verse 12 identifies Sarah as his half-sister. The intended concealment of their marriage remains deceptive. A technically true statement can mislead when an essential truth is deliberately withheld.

Verse 13 makes this a standing arrangement rather than an explanation invented only after this crisis. Its repetition helps expose a recurring failure of trust.

Prophecy, intercession and healing •

Abraham praying with Abimelech and his household nearby
Genesis 20:7, 17–18 • Prophet and intercessor

This is the first explicit use of prophet in the biblical narrative. The role here includes prayer for another person, not merely prediction of future events. Abraham’s intercession continues the prayer theme of Genesis 18 in a different setting.

God works through Abraham despite his failure. That does not excuse his behaviour or prove that every act of a prophet is right. The narrative holds vocation and accountability together.

The closing healing involves Abimelech and his household; the women are enabled to bear children. It does not describe men becoming pregnant or specify a medical diagnosis or the duration of the episode.

Restoration and public vindication •

Sarah returned gifts given and her public vindication before the king
Genesis 20:14–16 • Restoration includes Sarah’s public standing

Sarah is restored; gifts are given and Abraham is allowed to settle. Verse 16 addresses Sarah’s vindication, although its Hebrew wording is difficult and translations differ. Do not turn its imagery into a command that Sarah wear a veil.

Sarah is not merely a possession transferred between men. A Christian reflection should attend to her safety and dignity. The account’s references to slaves describe an ancient social setting, not a Christian ideal.

The silver is an ancient quantity of silver; avoid treating it automatically as a bag of modern-style minted coins or calculating an exact present-day value.

Questions readers may ask •

Why repeat the same behaviour? •

The narrative supplies fear for his life as Abraham’s explanation, not as a sufficient justification. Readers may reflect on how unresolved fear persists even after remarkable experiences of God.

Did Sarah become young again? •

The chapter does not say so. Unlike Genesis 12, it does not explain the taking of Sarah by praising her beauty. Do not supply a rejuvenation miracle or a motive the narrator does not give.

How does this relate to Isaac? •

In the surrounding narrative, Sarah is the promised mother of Isaac. Her protection preserves that marriage. The chapter explicitly says Abimelech had not approached her; Isaac’s birth follows in Genesis 21. This is a narrative-theological connection, not proof that Sarah was already pregnant here.

Does the half-sister statement permit such marriages today? •

No. Describing an ancient relationship is not a permission for Christians to enter prohibited close-relative marriages. Catholic teaching condemns incest (CCC 2388). The immediate issue here is also concealment of the marriage.

Can God speak to someone outside the covenant household? •

That is precisely what the narrative depicts. Abimelech receives a warning and is accountable for his response. God’s action is not limited to Abraham’s direct experiences.

Genesis 20 and notes • Catechism 2388

Further connections worth noticing •

  • Genesis 18–20: Abimelech’s appeal concerning innocence can be compared with Abraham’s concern for justice in 18:23–25. The situations are different, but the moral question echoes.
  • Sarah’s silence: she is reported as repeating the sibling claim (20:5), but the chapter gives little of her own experience. Avoid inventing her feelings or consent.
  • Protection before fulfilment: the threatened marriage stands just before the birth narrative in chapter 21.
  • Prayer beyond failure: intercession becomes part of restoration after Abraham has been confronted.
  • Royal name: Abimelech recurs later; do not confidently identify all biblical bearers as one person or assume that the name alone proves a royal title.

Reflection, prayer and summary •

  1. Where does fear tempt me to mislead?
  2. Do I accept correction from someone outside my group?
  3. Does my self-protection put another person at risk?
  4. Can I pray for those harmed by my choices?

Faithful God, free us from fear that conceals the truth. Teach us to protect the dignity of others, receive correction and repair the harm we cause. Make our prayer sincere and our trust stronger than our desire for control. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summary: Genesis 20 exposes a repeated failure while showing divine protection, moral accountability and restoration. Abimelech responds to a warning; Sarah is returned; Abraham intercedes. God’s fidelity does not erase the need for human truthfulness.
