GENESIS • CHAPTER 19 • ENGLISH & MALAYALAM BIBLE STUDY
Judgment, Rescue and Troubled Choices
Hospitality threatened by violence, urgent rescue, and a troubling family story whose consequences continue into later Scripture.

The depravity of Sodom •
Genesis 19:1–38 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
19:1
[a]The two angels came to Sodom in the evening; and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed himself with his face to the earth,
19:2
and said, “My lords, turn aside, I pray you, to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the street.”
19:3
But he urged them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
19:4
But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house;
19:5
and they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”
19:6
Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him,
19:7
and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.
19:8
Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
19:9
But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he would play the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door.
19:10
But the men put forth their hands and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
19:11
And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves groping for the door.
Warning and escape •
19:12
Then the men said to Lot, “Have you any one else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or any one you have in the city, bring them out of the place;
19:13
for we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”
19:14
So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up, get out of this place; for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
19:15
When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.”
19:16
But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him forth and set him outside the city.
19:17
And when they had brought them forth, they[b] said, “Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley; flee to the hills, lest you be consumed.”
19:18
And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords;
19:19
behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die.
19:20
Behold, yonder city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!”
19:21
He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.
19:22
Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zo′ar.[c]
Destruction and rescue •
19:23
The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zo′ar.
19:24
Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomor′rah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;
19:25
and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
19:26
But Lot’s wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
19:27
And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord;
19:28
and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomor′rah and toward all the land of the valley, and beheld, and lo, smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
19:29
So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.
Moab and Ammon •
19:30
Now Lot went up out of Zo′ar, and dwelt in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to dwell in Zo′ar; so he dwelt in a cave with his two daughters.
19:31
And the first-born said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth.
19:32
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father.”
19:33
So they made their father drink wine that night; and the first-born went in, and lay with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
19:34
And on the next day, the first-born said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father.”
19:35
So they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
19:36
Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.
19:37
The first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
19:38
The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
Mercy amid danger •

The chapter turns from Abraham’s welcome to Lot’s endangered guests. The crowd’s demand in 19:5 is a threat of sexual assault, not merely a wish to meet strangers.
Lot hesitates. His deliverance is explicitly attributed to the Lord’s mercy (19:16), and verse 29 connects the rescue with God remembering Abraham. This continues the intercession of chapter 18.
A necessary distinction: Lot’s offer of his daughters in 19:8 is morally indefensible. The duty to protect guests cannot justify exposing others to violence. Reporting the offer is not endorsing it.
Sulfur and fire: text and hypothesis •

What was used? The supplied English calls it brimstone and fire; the Malayalam names fire and sulfur. The narrative attributes the destruction to the Lord out of heaven. It does not specify an earthquake, volcanic eruption, gas explosion or meteor as its physical mechanism.
Such mechanisms are hypotheses. A modern sulfur deposit or burnt site is not, by itself, proof of the location or cause of the biblical event.
Archaeology note: the widely cited Tall el-Hammam airburst paper was retracted in 2025. Its original conclusions should not be presented as established proof. Read the journal’s retraction notice.
Lot’s wife and looking back • ലോത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യ

The text records looking back and becoming a pillar of salt. It does not name Lot’s wife or state her inner motive. Jesus recalls her in a warning about clinging to one’s life (Luke 17:32–33). Suggested motives such as longing for possessions belong to interpretation, not explicit information in Genesis.
Difficult questions: an honest reading •
Does the Bible approve Lot’s daughters’ actions?
No. The narrative records incest; it neither commands it nor presents it as a model. Catholic teaching condemns incest (CCC 2388). Their stated desire to preserve offspring explains the plan without making it right.
Did Lot knowingly plan the encounters?
The daughters devise the plan and make him drunk. The narrator twice says that he did not know when a daughter lay down or arose (19:33, 35). We should preserve that detail rather than invent conscious participation. Intoxication also raises the serious issue of absent meaningful consent.
Were they the only people left on earth?
That is the older daughter’s statement, not a declaration by the narrator that humanity has vanished. Zoar has just survived. Fear, isolation or desperation may help readers interpret the scene, but the text does not diagnose their mental state.
How can we explain this to someone who is not Christian?
We can acknowledge the wrongdoing honestly: the Bible is not a collection of flawless heroes. A story may disclose human failure without approving it. We need not defend incest or Lot’s earlier offer of his daughters in order to take Scripture seriously.
Benedict XVI teaches that difficult passages must be read with attention to their historical setting and the unfolding revelation fulfilled in Christ (Verbum Domini 42).
(Verbum Domini 42).
Moab and Ammon in later Scripture •

| Mother | Child | Later biblical connections |
|---|---|---|
Ancestor of the Moabites (19:37). | Moab’s territory is recognised in Deuteronomy 2:9; conflict appears in Numbers 22–25 and Judges 3. Ruth is a Moabite and ancestor of David (Ruth 4:13–22). |
Ancestor of the Ammonites (19:38). | Ammon’s territory is recognised in Deuteronomy 2:19; later conflict appears in Judges 10–11 and 2 Samuel 10. Naamah the Ammonite is Rehoboam’s mother (1 Kings 14:21). |
A blessed or cursed generation? Neither is an adequate label for every later member of these peoples. Genesis 19 does not pronounce a curse on the children. Later Scripture includes territorial provision, hostility, judgment and faithful individuals. An ancestor’s wrongdoing does not make descendants personally guilty of that act.
For the image’s conflict references, Judges 3 concerns Moab; Ammonite conflict appears especially in Judges 10–11.
Faith beyond a troubled beginning •

Ruth the Moabite becomes a model of fidelity and David’s great-grandmother. Matthew includes her in Jesus’ genealogy. God’s providence working through a troubled history does not turn the original wrongdoing into a good act.
Naamah the Ammonite is named as Rehoboam’s mother (1 Kings 14:21). Neither example justifies judging a whole people by its origin story.
Places and stages •
| Place | Role in the chapter | Reading note |
|---|---|---|
| Sodom • സോദോം | The visitors reach the city; Lot receives them. | The gate, house and street form successive settings (19:1–11). |
| Zoar • സോവാർ | Lot asks to escape to this small town. | The name is linked to its smallness (19:20–23); compare Bela / Zoar in Genesis 14:2. |
| The hills and cave • മലയും ഗുഹയും | Lot later leaves Zoar because he is afraid to stay there. | Do not merge the refuge in Zoar with the later cave episode (19:30). |
| Abraham’s lookout | He returns to the place where he stood before the Lord. | The text describes his view of rising smoke; it does not provide a surveyed viewpoint (19:27–28). |

Reflection, prayer and summary •
- Do I protect vulnerable people, even under pressure?
- Where am I reluctant to leave a harmful situation?
- Can I acknowledge a biblical character’s wrongdoing without losing sight of mercy?
- Do I judge people by ancestry rather than their own lives?
Merciful God, protect those threatened by violence. Give us courage to leave evil, wisdom to seek safety and compassion for those carrying painful family histories. Keep us truthful about sin and hopeful in your grace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Summary: Genesis 19 links judgment with mercy, rescue with human hesitation, and survival with continuing moral failure. Its difficult ending explains the origins of Moab and Ammon without requiring approval of incest or condemnation of every descendant. Later Scripture opens the story towards faithful lives and God’s providence.
