18:1

And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks[a] of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day.

18:2

He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the earth,

18:3

and said, “My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.

18:4

Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree,

18:5

while I fetch a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.”

18:6

And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures[b] of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”

18:7

And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it.

18:8

Then he took curds, and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

18:9

They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.”

18:10

The Lord said, “I will surely return to you in the spring, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.

18:11

Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

18:12

So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?”

18:13

The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’

18:14

Is anything too hard[c] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, in the spring, and Sarah shall have a son.”

18:15

But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

Judgment Pronounced on Sodom

18:16

Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way.

18:17

The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,

18:18

seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by him?[d]

18:19

No, for I have chosen[e] him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”

18:20

Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomor′rah is great and their sin is very grave,

18:21

I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry which has come to me; and if not, I will know.”

18:22

So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham still stood before the Lord.

18:23

Then Abraham drew near, and said, “Wilt thou indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked?

18:24

Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou then destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?

18:25

Far be it from thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

18:26

And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

18:27

Abraham answered, “Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.

18:28

Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Wilt thou destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

18:29

Again he spoke to him, and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.”

18:30

Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”

18:31

He said, “Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.”

18:32

Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.”

18:33

And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Hospitality at Mamre

Hospitality at Mamre — interpretive study illustration
Genesis 18 • Study illustration /

Abraham is sitting at the tent entrance in the heat of the day when the Lord appears (18:1). His welcome becomes energetic service: he runs, offers water and rest, asks Sarah to prepare bread, selects a good calf and stands nearby while the guests eat (18:2–8). Sarah and a servant share in this labour. The generous meal exceeds his modest offer of a little food. Hospitality here is attentive action, not merely polite words. Mamre is associated with Abraham near Hebron in 13:18; the narrative does not establish the precise surviving tree or tent site.

What does this welcome ask of us?

Make room for the stranger with practical care, shared work and respect. Hebrews 13:2 recalls hospitality to angels without knowing it. This is a spiritual connection, not a promise that every visitor is an angel.

Three visitors: text, theophany and interpretation — interpretive study illustration
Genesis 18 • Study illustration /

Genesis 18:1 identifies the event as an appearance of the Lord; 18:2 describes three men. The narrative moves between the visitors and the Lord speaking, while Genesis 19:1 identifies two visitors arriving at Sodom as angels. A theophany means a manifestation of God. It describes the divine encounter without resolving every detail of how God and the messengers are represented. Some early Christian interpreters understood the Lord here as the eternal Son appearing before the Incarnation. That traditional reading is not an explicit identification made by Genesis itself. Other Christian readings and sacred art see the three visitors as a symbol or foreshadowing of the Trinity. The doctrine of one God in three divine Persons is settled Catholic teaching; identifying these three visitors individually with Father, Son and Holy Spirit is not. This scene is not the Incarnation, which is the Son's taking human nature in Jesus Christ.

Does three visitors prove that Abraham saw the Trinity?

No. A Christian symbolic reading can illuminate faith, but should be distinguished from the literal narrative and from binding doctrine. Do not turn an image caption or an artistic portrayal into a definitive identification.

Divine encounters through Genesis 18

Divine encounters through Genesis 18 — interpretive study illustration
Genesis 18 • Study illustration /

Follow the text's own vocabulary. Genesis 12:1–3 records the Lord speaking the call and promise; 12:7 explicitly says that the Lord appeared to Abram. In 13:14–17 the Lord speaks after Lot separates from Abram. Genesis 15:1 describes the word of the Lord coming in a vision; 15:12–21 includes deep sleep and the covenant scene with smoke and fire. Genesis 16:7–13 concerns Hagar's encounter with the angel of the Lord, not an additional appearance to Abraham. Genesis 17:1 explicitly says that the Lord appeared to Abram; 18:1 again explicitly says that the Lord appeared. Thus 12:7, 17:1 and 18:1 are the three explicit 'Lord appeared' passages concerning Abraham through chapter 18. A list of those formulas is not a count of every divine communication in these chapters.

Are speech, vision and appearance interchangeable?

They overlap as ways of describing revelation, but the narrator does not always use the same form. Preserve the distinctions rather than claiming every speech was a visible appearance.

Sarah's laughter and the appointed time

Sarah's laughter and the appointed time — interpretive study illustration
Genesis 18 • Study illustration /

The promise of a son through Sarah, already made in 17:16–21, is renewed within her hearing (18:9–15). The narrator emphasises the couple's advanced age and Sarah's condition. Her inward laughter meets the Lord's question about what lies beyond divine power. The promise includes an appointed time; it is not merely an undefined hope. Her fearful denial is answered directly, yet the promise is not withdrawn. Abraham also laughed in 17:17; Genesis 21:1–7 later brings birth and joyful laughter into the story. These passages develop the theme connected with Isaac's name. Read the supplied 'in the spring' wording without silently replacing it with another translation.

Does the promise guarantee that every impossible personal wish will happen?

No. This is a particular covenant promise. It invites trust in God without making a universal promise of pregnancy, healing or a timetable for every prayer.

Sodom and Gomorrah: cities and earlier mentions

Sodom and Gomorrah: cities and earlier mentions — interpretive study illustration
Genesis 18 • Study illustration /

Sodom and Gomorrah are city names, not the names of two people. They already occur together in the geographical boundary description of Genesis 10:19. Genesis 13:10 compares the well-watered plain before their destruction; 13:12 locates Lot's tents near Sodom and 13:13 comments on its inhabitants' wrongdoing. Genesis 14 names their kings and records the regional conflict, Lot's capture and Abram's rescue. Genesis 18 therefore develops an existing narrative rather than introducing the cities for the first time. The ancient meanings of the names are uncertain. Popular explanations such as 'burning' or 'submersion' should not be presented as secure Hebrew definitions or as explanations supplied by this chapter.

Does Genesis give an exact modern map location?

It supplies a regional narrative setting associated with the plain and the Dead Sea area. Matching that setting with a particular excavated site remains debated; an illustrative map is not proof.

Why disclose the matter to Abraham?

Verses 17–19 present the Lord's deliberation about sharing what is to happen. Abraham's vocation to become a nation and a blessing is tied to teaching his household righteousness and justice. Verses 20–21 then disclose the outcry and the intention to investigate. The reader hears the Lord's deliberation before Abraham's intercession begins. The scene draws Abraham into the moral seriousness of his calling: election is responsibility for just living and blessing others, not immunity from judgment. The chapter does not say that Abraham received this information by an additional dream or vision.

Is God's friendship merely private privilege?

No. In this passage it leads toward a household formed in justice and toward prayer for others, including a city outside Abraham's own camp.

The outcry and God's 'going down' നിലവിളിയും ദൈവം ഇറങ്ങിച്ചെല്ലുന്നതും

The outcry and God's 'going down' — interpretive study illustration
Genesis 18 • Study illustration /

Verse 20 describes a great outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and very grave sin. An outcry is the language of wrong demanding attention and justice; the text does not name each person crying out. Verse 21 describes going down to see and know. This is human-shaped narrative language presenting judgment as attentive and just, rather than arbitrary punishment based on rumour. It should not be turned into a denial of God's knowledge or a claim that God needs travel to discover facts. Genesis 19 continues the narrative by showing the visitors' encounter with the city. Concern for the victims and careful judgment belong together.

Is the outcry just Abraham's complaint?

No. The Lord reports an outcry already reaching him before Abraham asks for the city to be spared. The petition for mercy does not erase the wrong that prompted the outcry.

Reading the wrongdoing across Scripture

Genesis 18 announces grave wrongdoing without listing every offence. Genesis 19:4–11 depicts a mob threatening sexual assault against guests, coercion and violent hostility toward the stranger. Lot's proposal involving his daughters is also morally appalling; narration is not approval. Ezekiel 16:49–50 indicts Sodom's pride, abundance, complacency and failure to support the poor and needy, together with haughtiness and abominations. Jude 7 recalls sexual immorality and pursuit of other flesh; interpretations of that expression must attend to the angelic visitors in Genesis 19 and Jude's surrounding argument. These texts together resist reducing the account either to poor hospitality alone or to a single slogan detached from violence, sexual wrongdoing, arrogance and neglect of the vulnerable. No reading licenses hatred or mistreatment of any person.

Do Ezekiel and Jude cancel one another?

No. They emphasise different aspects for their own audiences. Read each in context and let the wider biblical witness challenge both personal immorality and social injustice.

Abraham approaches with boldness and humility (18:23–32), appealing to the Judge's justice and asking that the entire place be spared for the sake of the righteous. The successive requests are fifty (24–26), forty-five (28), forty (29), thirty (30), twenty (31) and ten (32). Each receives an assurance of sparing the city at that number. This is not a formula for calculating acceptable collateral harm. Nor does the chapter explain why Abraham stops at ten; later associations should not be substituted for its silence. Catholic teaching presents intercession as prayer on behalf of others, participating in Christ's intercession (CCC 2634–2636); CCC 2571 specifically recalls Abraham's intercession. God's justice takes evil seriously, while mercy seeks salvation and conversion. Benedict XVI's audience of 18 May 2011 reads Abraham's plea in this relationship between justice and mercy. Genesis 19:29 later explicitly connects God's remembering Abraham with Lot's rescue.

Did Abraham persuade an unwilling God to become merciful?

That is an inadequate reading. The dialogue reveals God's willingness to spare and forms Abraham in concern for others. Prayer draws the intercessor into God's mercy rather than making justice irrelevant.

Bab edh-Dhra and Numeira, near the southeastern Dead Sea, are Early Bronze Age sites proposed in some reconstructions as candidates for the cities of the plain. Their occupation histories and destruction horizons require careful dating; neither identification with Sodom or Gomorrah is established by a name inscription. Tall el-Hammam in the northeastern Dead Sea region is another disputed proposal, associated with a different archaeological chronology. Regional location, a destruction layer or evidence of fire cannot by itself identify a biblical city or demonstrate divine judgment. The 2021 Scientific Reports paper proposing an airburst destruction at Tall el-Hammam was retracted on 24 April 2025. Its airburst claim must not be presented as proven science or proof of the Genesis account. The retraction does not settle every question about the site; it removes that paper as reliable support for its conclusions. Maps and generated illustrations on this page are teaching aids, not excavation photographs or archaeological evidence.

Reflection, prayer and summary

  1. Who needs my practical welcome this week?
  2. Can I name my doubts honestly before God?
  3. Whose cry have I ignored while enjoying comfort?
  4. Do I pray beyond my own circle while seeking justice for those harmed?

Lord of Abraham and Sarah, open our homes and hearts to those who need welcome. Strengthen our trust when your promise exceeds our understanding. Hear the cry of those who suffer, turn us from pride and wrongdoing, and teach us to seek justice with mercy. Make us faithful in prayer for our neighbours and for the whole world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summary: Genesis 18 joins generous hospitality, the promise of Sarah’s son and prayer for a threatened city. God’s disclosure connects Abraham’s election with righteousness and justice. His intercession seeks mercy for the whole place without denying grave wrongdoing. Distinguish Christian interpretation from explicit identification, and treat archaeological proposals with appropriate caution.
