17:1

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am God Almighty;[a] walk before me, and be blameless.

17:2

And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”

17:3

Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him,

17:4

“Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.

17:5

No longer shall your name be Abram,[b] but your name shall be Abraham;[c] for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

17:6

I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you.

17:7

And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.

17:8

And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

17:9

And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.

17:10

This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your descendants after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.

17:11

You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

17:12

He that is eight days old among you shall be circumcised; every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house, or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,

17:13

both he that is born in your house and he that is bought with your money, shall be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.

17:14

Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

The promise of Isaac •

17:15

And God said to Abraham, “As for Sar′ai your wife, you shall not call her name Sar′ai, but Sarah shall be her name.

17:16

I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her; I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

17:17

Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”

17:18

And Abraham said to God, “O that Ish′mael might live in thy sight!”

17:19

God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac.[d] I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasing covenant for his descendants after him.

17:20

As for Ish′mael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him and make him fruitful and multiply him exceedingly; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

17:21

But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this season next year.”

17:22

When he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

17:23

Then Abraham took Ish′mael his son and all the slaves born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him.

17:24

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

17:25

And Ish′mael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

17:26

That very day Abraham and his son Ish′mael were circumcised;

17:27

and all the men of his house, those born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

El ShaddaiCommonly translated God Almighty. The underlying etymology is debated; avoid treating one proposed derivation as certain.17:1
Abram → AbrahamAbram is commonly understood as exalted father. The narrative links Abraham with father of a multitude of nations.17:5
Sarai → SarahBoth forms are associated with princess. Do not claim Sarai means quarrelsome or that she previously lacked dignity.17:15–16
Isaac • ഇസഹാക്ക്Associated with he laughs. Abraham’s laughter begins a theme continued in chapters 18 and 21.17:17, 19
Ishmael • ഇസ്മായേൽGod hears; Abraham’s plea for him is answered with a blessing.17:18, 20

The covenant joins divine initiative with a call to a faithful life: walk before God and be blameless. As a reflection, a new name invites us to receive identity as a vocation, rather than merely a label.

The covenant sign •

Symbolic panels explaining covenant household males eighth day and obedience
Genesis 17:9–14, 23–27 • The procedure is not depicted

Circumcision is appointed as an embodied sign of belonging to the covenant. It is not the first covenant in Genesis: Noah’s covenant precedes it, and Abraham’s promise has already been developed in chapters 12 and 15.

The repeated reference to the same day highlights Abraham’s response. The sign belongs within a life of covenant fidelity, rather than replacing faith and obedience.

Beyond biological descent •

Males born in the household and acquired from foreigners shown with equal dignity
Genesis 17:12–13 • The command concerns the covenant household

The command includes household males who are not Abraham’s offspring. The social setting includes slavery; describing that setting does not establish it as a Christian ideal. Women belong to the covenant people even though this bodily sign is prescribed for males.

Circumcision: questions and answers •

1. Is this its first mention? •

Yes, in the Bible. It was practised elsewhere in the ancient world; Genesis 17 gives it the particular meaning of a covenant sign. First biblical mention does not mean first occurrence in human history.

2. What is it, and why this sign? •

It is the removal of the male foreskin. The passage states its covenant purpose, but does not explain exhaustively why this particular bodily sign was chosen. Its setting among promises of descendants is significant; more detailed symbolism should be labelled interpretation.

3. Only Abraham’s descendants, or every believer? •

Neither description is exact. The command includes males within Abraham’s covenant household, including those not biologically descended from him. It is not expressed here as a command to every person anywhere who believes in God.

4. Why the eighth day?

That is the prescribed timing (17:12). Later Christian reflection connects the eighth day with resurrection and new creation. Distinguish that reading from the explanation explicitly given in Genesis. Popular blood-clotting claims are not the Church’s doctrinal explanation.

5. Why are Christians not required to receive it?

Acts 15 rejects the demand that Gentile converts must be circumcised to be saved. Peter points to salvation through Christ’s grace and God’s gift of the Spirit. Christian initiation does not require first becoming a circumcised member of the Jewish people.

6. How is it connected with Baptism? •

Colossians 2:11–12 links spiritual circumcision in Christ with Baptism into his death and risen life. Catholic teaching sees Old Covenant signs as prefiguring New Covenant sacraments (CCC 1150). Baptism is given to women and men; it is more than an outward badge.

7. Was Jesus circumcised? •

Yes, on the eighth day (Luke 2:21). The Catechism explains his incorporation into the covenant people, submission to the Law and the prefiguring of Baptism (CCC 527).

8. Did the sign first make Abraham righteous? •

Romans 4:9–12 places the reckoning of Abraham’s faith as righteousness before his circumcision. Paul calls circumcision a sign and seal of that righteousness of faith. The sequence matters when reading Genesis 15 and 17 together.

9. Why call it everlasting if Christians do not receive it?

Read the covenant promise in the whole biblical story, including Christ and the apostolic decision. Christians understand fulfilment in Christ, rather than a requirement that every earlier covenant practice remain their initiation rite. This does not justify contempt for Jewish covenant identity or religious practice.

Circumcision of the heart •

Prayer inward renewal and practical care illustrate circumcision of the heart
Deuteronomy 30:6 • Jeremiah 4:4 • Romans 2:28–29

The call to inward renewal is already present in the Old Testament. Deuteronomy connects the heart’s circumcision with loving God; Jeremiah calls for a changed heart. Romans speaks of inward transformation by the Spirit. An outward sign must not become a substitute for a faithful life.

IsaacThe covenant is to be established with him and his descendants (17:19, 21).
IshmaelBlessing, fruitfulness, twelve princes and a great nation (17:20).

Abraham’s plea for Ishmael is heard. The covenant line through Isaac and the blessing of Ishmael are distinct, not interchangeable. Neither distinction permits ethnic contempt or a claim that one child has no value.

Canaan is the land named in 17:8. This chapter supplies a covenant promise, not a modern political map or a complete settlement of present territorial disputes.

Further details to notice •

  • Abraham laughs first: Sarah’s laughter comes in Genesis 18. Isaac’s name carries the theme forward.
  • Falling on his face: Abraham’s posture appears at 17:3 and 17:17; reverence and astonishment occur in the same encounter.
  • The promise becomes specific: Sarah is named as mother, Isaac is named before birth, and the following year is specified.
  • Same-day response: 17:23 and 26 underline prompt obedience, while 17:27 includes the household.
  • Sarah’s place: she receives her own blessing and association with nations and kings, rather than appearing only as an unnamed means to Abraham’s future.

  1. Do I let God’s promise shape my identity?
  2. Do outward signs correspond to inward faithfulness?
  3. Can I trust God while caring for those already entrusted to me?
  4. What act of obedience should I not postpone?

Faithful God, renew our trust in your promises. Make our hearts attentive to you, our worship sincere and our actions faithful. Teach us to live the grace of Baptism and honour every person you entrust to our care. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
