Abram and Melchizedek — Rescue and Blessing
Abram rescues Lot, receives a priestly blessing, and chooses integrity after victory. Melchizedek opens a remarkable biblical path towards Christ’s priesthood.

Lot’s Captivity and Rescue •
Genesis 14:1–24 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
14:1
In the days of Am′raphel king of Shinar, Ar′ioch king of Ella′sar, Ched-or-lao′mer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goi′im,
14:2
these kings made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomor′rah, Shinab king of Admah, Sheme′ber king of Zeboi′im, and the king of Bela (that is, Zo′ar).
14:3
And all these joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).
14:4
Twelve years they had served Ched-or-lao′mer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
14:5
In the fourteenth year Ched-or-lao′mer and the kings who were with him came and subdued the Reph′aim in Ash′teroth-karna′im, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Sha′veh-kiriatha′im,
14:6
and the Horites in their Mount Se′ir as far as El-paran on the border of the wilderness;
14:7
then they turned back and came to En-mish′pat (that is, Kadesh), and subdued all the country of the Amal′ekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Haz′azon-ta′mar.
14:8
Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomor′rah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboi′im, and the king of Bela (that is, Zo′ar) went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim
14:9
with Ched-or-lao′mer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goi′im, Am′raphel king of Shinar, and Ar′ioch king of Ella′sar, four kings against five.
14:10
Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits; and as the kings of Sodom and Gomor′rah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled to the mountain.
14:11
So the enemy took all the goods of Sodom and Gomor′rah, and all their provisions, and went their way;
14:12
they also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
14:13
Then one who had escaped came, and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks[a] of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram.
14:14
When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.
14:15
And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus.
14:16
Then he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his goods, and the women and the people.
Abram Blessed by Melchizedek •
14:17
After his return from the defeat of Ched-or-lao′mer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
14:18
And Melchiz′edek[b] king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High.
14:19
And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth;
14:20
and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
14:21
And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.”
14:22
But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have sworn to the Lord God Most High, maker of heaven and earth,
14:23
that I would not take a thread or a sandal-thong or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’
14:24
I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me; let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”
Four kings against five •

- 12 years — service: the local kings serve Chedorlaomer.
- Year 13 — rebellion: they reject that control.
- Year 14 — campaign: Chedorlaomer and his allies attack.
| Kingdom / region | Ruler | Role and location |
|---|---|---|
| Shinar | Amraphel | Invading coalition; generally associated with Babylonia in southern Mesopotamia. |
| Ellasar | Arioch | Invading coalition; precise identification uncertain. |
| Elam | Chedorlaomer | Leader receiving service from the local kings; ancient region broadly in southwestern present-day Iran. |
| Goiim | Tidal | Invading coalition; name can mean nations; exact territory uncertain. |
| Sodom | Bera | Five-king coalition; Lot is living here when captured. |
| Gomorrah | Birsha | Five-king coalition; its provisions and possessions are plundered. |
| Admah | Shinab | Five-king coalition of the plain. |
| Zeboiim | Shemeber | Five-king coalition of the plain. |
| Bela / Zoar | Unnamed king | Two names for the same city in this account; five-king coalition. |
These are relative years within the account, not a supplied BC date. Ancient regions do not correspond exactly to modern national borders.
Rescue beyond disagreement •

From Genesis 13 to 14
Separation did not end Abram’s concern for Lot. The previous chapter’s family tension is followed by costly practical help.
318 trained household men
The stated number refers to men born in Abram’s household. His allies also participate; the account does not give the total allied force.
Preparation and strategy
Abram divides his forces at night. Faith is accompanied by preparation, cooperation and decisive action.
People are restored
The outcome includes rescued women and other captives. Christian reflection can focus on mercy and protection of the vulnerable.
The narrative gives no symbolic meaning for 318. Its military action is not a general command for Christians to use violence.
Places, routes and peoples •

| Place | Verse | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Siddim / Salt Sea region | 14:3, 8–10 | Battlefield associated with bitumen pits. Salt Sea refers to the Dead Sea; precise battlefield location uncertain. |
| Ashteroth-karnaim | 14:5 | Rephaim defeated here; commonly associated with the Bashan region east of the Jordan. |
| Ham | 14:5 | Zuzim defeated here. This is a place-name, not Noah’s son; exact site uncertain. |
| Shaveh-kiriathaim | 14:5 | Emim defeated here; precise identification uncertain. |
| Mount Seir | 14:6 | Horite hill country, associated elsewhere with Edom. |
| El-paran | 14:6 | Wilderness-edge point in the campaign; exact identification uncertain. |
| En-mishpat / Kadesh | 14:7 | Two names for one location in the text; southern wilderness setting. |
| Hazazon-tamar | 14:7 | Amorite settlement; 2 Chronicles 20:2 associates the name with En-gedi. |
| Oaks of Mamre / Hebron | 14:13; 13:18 | Abram’s base. Mamre also names his Amorite ally; distinguish the man from the locality. |
| Dan | 14:14 | Northern pursuit point; the text uses the place-name Dan. It is not a reference here to Jacob’s later-born son. |
| Hobah | 14:15 | North of Damascus; precise site uncertain. |
| Damascus | 14:15 | Geographical reference locating Hobah, in the region of present-day Syria. |
| Shaveh / King’s Valley | 14:17 | Meeting place after the rescue; distinct from Shaveh-kiriathaim. Exact location uncertain. |
| Salem | 14:18 | Melchizedek’s kingdom, traditionally associated with Jerusalem. |
| People | Where / role |
|---|---|
| Rephaim | Ashteroth-karnaim (14:5). |
| Zuzim | Ham (14:5). |
| Emim | Shaveh-kiriathaim (14:5). |
| Horites | Seir hill country (14:6). |
| Amalekites | Territory attacked during the southern campaign (14:7). |
| Amorites | Hazazon-tamar; Mamre and his brothers are Abram’s allies (14:7, 13). |
| Hebrew | Abram is described as the Hebrew (14:13); this is the first occurrence of that designation in Genesis. |
Two useful distinctions: Ham here is a place, while Rephaim, Zuzim and Emim are peoples. Shaveh and Shaveh-kiriathaim are different names in this account.
Who was Melchizedek? •

Genesis presents a king who is also a priest of God Most High (El Elyon). His blessing directs praise to God. Abram’s oath in 14:22 joins this divine title with the name of the Lord.
Hebrews 7:1–2 interprets his name in terms of righteousness and Salem in terms of peace. Salem is traditionally associated with Jerusalem.
His role reaches beyond the immediate battle: he becomes an important biblical figure for understanding Christ.
Melchizedek and Christ’s priesthood •

Typology means reading an earlier person or event as a pattern brought to fulfilment in Christ. Hebrews explicitly develops this connection with Melchizedek.
Jesus has an enduring priesthood, intercedes for those who approach God through him, and offered himself once for all (Hebrews 7:24–27).
Was Melchizedek literally Jesus? Hebrews says he resembles the Son of God. Its discussion of absent ancestry and death draws significance from what Genesis does not record. It does not require us to claim he had no human parents or was literally Jesus.
Read Psalm 110:4 and Hebrews 7:1–3, 17, 24–27.
Bread and wine: Eucharistic foreshadowing •

Genesis says Melchizedek brought bread and wine. Catholic teaching connects his gesture with the presentation of the Eucharistic gifts.
Catechism §1350 explains this relationship within the Church’s celebration of Mass. The earlier scene is a foreshadowing; the institution of the Eucharist belongs to Christ at the Last Supper.
Read the images together without collapsing the two events into one historical ceremony.
Two encounters after victory •

A tenth in gratitude
Abram gives a tenth. Hebrews 7 reflects on this gift in relation to priesthood. It precedes the later Levitical tithe system.
Giving without bargaining
This episode can inspire generosity. By itself, it does not establish a compulsory ten-percent rule for every Christian.
Refusing personal enrichment
Abram will not let the king of Sodom claim to have made him rich. Success brings a test of independence and integrity.
Respecting others’ shares
His personal refusal does not cancel his companions’ entitlement. He allows Aner, Eshcol and Mamre their portions.
Details worth noticing •
- First use of Hebrew: Abram is identified this way in 14:13. Avoid treating a proposed word origin as an unquestionable explanation.
- A priest before Levi: Melchizedek’s appearance comes before Israel’s later Levitical priesthood; he is the first person explicitly called a priest in Genesis.
- God receives praise: the blessing attributes deliverance to God, even though the account describes human planning and effort.
- Ancient terminology: bitumen is a natural tar-like substance. The references to pits help describe the battlefield.
- History and uncertainty: the chapter supplies names and places, but no explicit absolute date. Identifications of several rulers and locations remain disputed.
- Developing pattern: promise and worship in Genesis 12–13 are followed by rescue, blessing and integrity in Genesis 14; Genesis 15 develops the covenant.
Catholic reflection and discussion •
Who needs help even after a disagreement? Abram’s concern invites us to practise mercy beyond injured pride.
How do we respond to success? The meeting with Melchizedek directs our attention towards gratitude; the encounter with Sodom invites examination of our motives.
At Mass, bring both thanksgiving and the needs of others before God. Let worship shape practical generosity and honest decisions.
- Whom can I help without expecting repayment?
- Do I give thanks after a difficulty passes?
- Can I refuse a benefit that compromises integrity?
Lord Jesus, our enduring High Priest, teach us to help those in distress, receive your gifts with gratitude and act with integrity. Unite our lives to your offering of love. Amen.
Chapter summary •
War brings captivity to Lot. Abram acts with his household and allies to bring the captives back. Melchizedek, king and priest, blesses Abram and praises God; Abram gives a tenth. He then refuses personal enrichment from Sodom while respecting his companions’ shares. The chapter joins mercy, gratitude and integrity, and prepares a biblical connection to Christ’s priesthood.
