13:1

So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb.

13:2

Now Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

13:3

And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

13:4

to the place where he had made an altar at the first; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord.

13:5

And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents,

13:6

so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together,

13:7

and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle. At that time the Canaanites and the Per′izzites dwelt in the land.

13:8

Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are kinsmen.

13:9

Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.”

13:10

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw that the Jordan valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zo′ar; this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomor′rah.

13:11

So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan valley, and Lot journeyed east; thus they separated from each other.

13:12

Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, while Lot dwelt among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

13:13

Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.

13:14

The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward;

13:15

for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants for ever.

13:16

I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your descendants also can be counted.

13:17

Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.”

13:18

So Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the oaks[a] of Mamre, which are at Hebron; and there he built an altar to the Lord.

Back to the altar •

Abram praying beside an altar near Bethel
Genesis 13:1–4 • Returning to prayer and worship

After Egypt, Abram returns to his earlier campsite and altar. His journey resumes with worship. The chapter also ends with an altar at Mamre: prayer frames the story of choices and conflict.

Christian reflection: After failure or uncertainty, return to prayer. Ask for grace to make the next decision faithfully.

Choosing peace •

Three panels showing herders in conflict, Abram seeking peace and Lot choosing first
Genesis 13:5–9 • Conflict → conversation → a practical solution

Abundance needs wisdom

The problem is limited pasture for two large households. Prosperity brings responsibilities as well as opportunities.

Take the first step

Abram opens the conversation and places their kinship above the dispute. Peacemaking requires action.

Make room for another

He allows Lot to choose first. Read this generosity alongside his trust in the divine promise.

Practical boundaries

Separate grazing areas resolve the immediate conflict. Genesis 14 will show Abram still coming to Lot’s aid.

Two ways of seeing •

Lot choosing the fertile Jordan plain and Abram remaining in Canaan
Genesis 13:10–13 • Consider the spiritual environment as well as visible advantages

Lot looks at the fertile valley and chooses it. Later, God tells Abram to look at the land he will receive. This contrast invites us to consider the difference between seizing an opportunity and receiving a promise.

The narrator places Sodom’s wickedness beside its attractive surroundings. Fertility is real; so is the moral danger. The passage does not tell us every motive behind Lot’s decision.

Lot should not be reduced to a villain: 2 Peter 2:7–8 later describes him as righteous and distressed by wickedness.

God renews the promise •

Abram surveying the land with a reminder of descendants like dust
Genesis 13:14–17 • Land, descendants, and a future received in faith

Look in every direction • 13:14

God directs Abram’s vision beyond the immediate disagreement.

Land and descendants • 13:15

The promise of Genesis 12:7 is reaffirmed. It concerns a future beyond Abram’s own lifetime.

Dust of the earth • 13:16

Dust expresses an uncountable multitude. The stars appear in Genesis 15:5; sand appears in Genesis 22:17. These images are related but occur in different passages.

Walk through the land • 13:17

Abram is invited to explore what God promises. The verse does not provide a universal ritual for claiming property.

This chapter renews the promise; the covenant ceremony comes in Genesis 15. The timing after separation is not a command to remove people from our lives to obtain blessings.

Schematic map from Egypt through the Negeb to Bethel and Hebron, with Lot moving towards the Jordan plain
Schematic illustration • Locations and routes are approximate

Egypt → Negeb: Abram returns from the famine episode of Genesis 12.

Bethel / Ai: Return to the earlier campsite and altar; the disagreement and separation follow.

Jordan plain / Zoar / Sodom: Lot chooses the well-watered region and moves near Sodom.

Mamre / Hebron: Abram settles by the oaks and builds an altar.

Sequence rather than dated chronology: the chapter supplies no elapsed years or travel distances. Sodom’s precise location is not established by this illustration.

New Testament connections •

Three panels connecting peacemaking, life in tents and inheritance through faith with New Testament passages
Read Genesis within the wider story of faith and fulfilment

Meekness and peacemaking

Matthew 5:5, 9 blesses the meek and peacemakers. Abram’s conduct illustrates these qualities. This is a thematic parallel, not an explicit prediction of the Beatitudes.

Tents and God’s lasting city

Hebrews 11:8–16 explicitly presents Abraham as a pilgrim of faith, living in tents while awaiting God’s city and a heavenly homeland.

Inheritance through faith

Romans 4:13–16 speaks of Abraham’s inheritance in the wider terms of the world and the righteousness of faith. Christian hope reaches beyond immediate possessions.

The promise and Christ

Galatians 3:16, 29 reads the Abrahamic promise in relation to Christ; those belonging to Christ are heirs according to the promise. This concerns the wider Abraham story.

Details worth noticing •

  • Abram, not yet Abraham: the change of name occurs in Genesis 17:5.
  • Kinship: Lot is Abram’s nephew (Genesis 11:27). The appeal to brotherhood in 13:8 expresses family solidarity.
  • Existing inhabitants: 13:7 mentions Canaanites and Perizzites. The land is already inhabited.
  • A narrative warning: the reference to Sodom’s future destruction anticipates Genesis 19.
  • Continued care: separation in Genesis 13 is followed by Abram rescuing Lot in Genesis 14.
  • A developing pattern: journey → worship → testing → renewed promise → worship.
  • No guaranteed material reward: generosity and faithfulness are not a formula for wealth.

Catholic reflection •

Abram’s example invites an examination of conscience: do possessions serve our relationships, or do relationships suffer for possessions? Prayer should shape the way we speak, negotiate and share.

His generosity does not remove practical responsibility. He finds a workable arrangement while preserving concern for his relative. Christians can practise this through honest conversation, fair sharing, forgiveness and reconciliation.

The altar calls us back to worship; the tents remind us that our lasting hope is with God. Bring family tensions to prayer and seek grace to act with humility.

Discuss and pray •

  1. Where can I take the first step towards peace?
  2. Do I consider character and faith when choosing opportunities?
  3. What helps our household return to prayer?

Lord, give us generous hearts, wise judgement and the courage to seek peace. Teach us to trust your promises and to walk faithfully with you. Amen.
