15:1

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”[a]

15:2

But Abram said, “O Lord God, what wilt thou give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Elie′zer of Damascus?”

15:3

And Abram said, “Behold, thou hast given me no offspring; and a slave born in my house will be my heir.”

15:4

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; your own son shall be your heir.”

15:5

And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

15:6

And he believed the Lord; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness.

15:7

And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chalde′ans, to give you this land to possess.”

15:8

But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”

15:9

He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a she-goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

15:10

And he brought him all these, cut them in two, and laid each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.

15:11

And when birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

15:12

As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and lo, a dread and great darkness fell upon him.

15:13

Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know of a surety that your descendants will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and will be slaves there, and they will be oppressed for four hundred years;

15:14

but I will bring judgment on the nation which they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

15:15

As for yourself, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

15:16

And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

15:17

When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.

15:18

On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphra′tes,

A promise amid honest questions •

Three scenes of Abram expressing concern, receiving the promise and looking towards heaven
Genesis 15:1–6 • Childlessness, assurance and trust

Do not fear • 15:1

After the events of Genesis 14, God speaks of protection and reward. The chapter does not specify exactly what Abram fears.

Questions within faith

Abram brings his childlessness and uncertainty before God. Honest prayer can include grief, questions and a desire for reassurance.

His own descendant • 15:4

The heir will come from Abram himself. Isaac is not yet named, and Sarah is not explicitly identified here as the promised child’s mother; Genesis 17 clarifies this.

Faith before sight • 15:6

Abram trusts the speaker before seeing the promised future. This trust becomes a major New Testament reference.

Dust, stars and sand •

Three panels comparing dust in Genesis 13, stars in Genesis 15, and stars and sand in Genesis 22
Genesis 13:16 • 15:5 • 22:17

The promise develops through repeated images: dust in Genesis 13, stars in Genesis 15, and stars with seashore sand in Genesis 22. Each expresses descendants beyond counting. These images are not a numerical census or an instruction to calculate a population.

The starry illustration is an artistic representation. The narrative later describes sunset in 15:12; it does not explain every transition of time within the vision.

Genesis 15:6 • God’s grace and the response of living faith
Genesis 15:6 in the New Testament •
PassageMain emphasisChristian application
Romans 4:3, 9–12, 23–25God’s gracious justification; Abraham believes before circumcision. Paul connects the account with faith in God who raised Jesus.Rely on God’s grace rather than imagining salvation as a wage earned from him.
Galatians 3:6–9, 26–29Those of faith share Abraham’s blessing; believers belong to Christ and inherit according to the promise. The promise opens towards a family gathered in Christ across peoples and backgrounds.
James 2:21–23Abraham’s faith works with his actions; the Genesis text is fulfilled as his trust takes the form of obedience.Living faith bears fruit. Read Paul and James together rather than dismissing grace or obedient love.

Catholic reflection: God’s grace comes first. We receive his gift in faith, and living faith expresses itself through love and obedience. Good actions are not a way to make God owe us salvation.

Read Romans 4, Galatians 3 and James 2.

Understanding the covenant ceremony •

Symbolic diagram of divided animals and whole birds, Abrams deep sleep, and smoke and fire passing between the pieces
Genesis 15:9–18 • Symbolic illustration, without graphic detail

A covenant is a solemn, binding relationship established through commitments. The Hebrew expression for making a covenant literally involves cutting a covenant. Divided animals belong to the oath imagery; Jeremiah 34:18–20 provides a biblical parallel.

The three larger animals are divided; the two birds are not. Abram prepares the scene and drives away birds of prey. Later he falls into deep sleep and darkness.

The smoking firepot and flaming torch signify divine presence. The narrative describes these passing between the pieces, not Abram. This strongly emphasises God’s initiative and commitment.

Do not assign separate divine persons to the firepot and torch, or claim a specific spiritual meaning for every animal or bird: the passage does not provide those explanations. The scene is an ancient covenant rite, not a ritual Christians are instructed to repeat.

Promise, waiting and deliverance •

Foreign sojourn, oppression, deliverance and return with separate 400 and 430 year references
Genesis 15:13–16 • Anticipation of the Exodus story
Waiting and fulfilment •
ExpressionReferenceHow to read it
400 yearsGenesis 15:13Prediction of foreign sojourn, servitude and oppression; Acts 7:6 repeats the figure. Do not assume an exact starting date is supplied.
Fourth generationGenesis 15:16Return described in generational language. Do not automatically define each generation as a fixed 100-year period.
430 yearsExodus 12:40–41; Galatians 3:17Related chronological statements with different frames; textual traditions also differ over the scope of the sojourn.
Deliverance with possessionsGenesis 15:14; Exodus 12:35–36A link to the Exodus story. It is not a universal promise of financial gain after hardship.

The prediction anticipates the Exodus. A promise does not mean the absence of suffering or an immediate timetable. The return is also linked with the Amorites’ iniquity not yet being complete: the narrative presents divine patience and judgment, not merely Abram’s personal schedule.

The fourth generation and the years should be compared carefully; interpreters differ on their chronological relationship. The judgment statement is not a claim that an ethnicity is inherently evil.

Places and peoples in greater detail •

Regional orientation map with Euphrates and debated river of Egypt alongside all ten peoples
Genesis 15:18–21 • Orientation rather than precise modern borders

The six geographical entries below distinguish named places, regional language and later narrative connections. The ten peoples form a separate list: a people-name does not automatically identify a city, a fixed border or a modern ethnic group.

Places and geographical language •
Name / referenceSetting and significanceWhat remains uncertain
Damascus •
15:2
Ancient city in the region of present-day Syria; Eliezer is associated with it. Genesis 14:15 had used Damascus to locate Hobah. The chapter does not describe Abram travelling there or provide a detailed biography of Eliezer.
Ur of the Chaldeans •
15:7
Place of origin recalled to explain God’s guidance. Commonly identified with Tell el-Muqayyar in southern Iraq.Northern proposals also exist. The title Chaldeans reflects terminology familiar to later readers; a precise patriarchal date cannot be inferred.
This land / Canaan •
15:7, 18–21
The promised land within the eastern Mediterranean setting of the Abram narrative; the region is already inhabited. The chapter supplies no cadastral map. An ancient regional term is not identical to a modern state.
The foreign land •
15:13–14
Unnamed in the prediction itself. The later Exodus narrative identifies Egypt as the setting of Israel’s enslavement and deliverance.Do not insert the name Egypt into the quoted verse as though it appeared there.
River of Egypt •
15:18
Southwestern boundary expression. Proposed identifications include the Nile or a branch, and the Wadi el-Arish; the NABRE reads Wadi of Egypt.Translations and interpreters differ. Our map deliberately leaves the identification open rather than fixing an exact line.
Euphrates / Great River •
15:18
Major river flowing through the regions of present-day Türkiye, Syria and Iraq; a prominent Mesopotamian landmark.Knowing the river does not settle every aspect of the ancient land promise or its historical fulfilment.
The ten peoples •
People in Genesis 15Biblical setting and further readingCareful identification
Kenites •
15:19
Judges 1:16 places Kenites associated with Moses’ father-in-law in the southern wilderness of Judah. Judges 4:11 also mentions a Kenite family.Later passages give context, not a complete map of the group in Abram’s time. Do not identify them with a modern ethnicity.
Kenizzites •
15:19
Caleb is called a Kenizzite in Numbers 32:12 and Joshua 14:6, 14.The precise relationship between Caleb’s designation and this earlier people is not fully explained.
Kadmonites •
15:19
Named in this land list; little further biblical information is available about this group.Often associated linguistically with the east, but a proposed meaning does not establish their location or history.
Hittites •
15:20
Genesis 23 presents Abraham negotiating with Hittites near Hebron to buy Sarah’s burial place.Biblical uses of Hittite vary. Do not assume every local group named this way is identical with the Anatolian imperial population.
Perizzites •
15:20
Already named alongside Canaanites in Genesis 13:7; appear again in later accounts such as Judges 1:4–5.Precise origins and territorial limits are uncertain. An association with rural settlements is a proposal, not a settled biography.
Rephaim •
15:20
Genesis 14:5 names them near Ashteroth-karnaim; Deuteronomy 3:11–13 associates Rephaim with Og and Bashan. Here a population designation. The word has other uses elsewhere; it should not be turned into a confident theory of non-human ancestry.
Amorites •
15:16, 21
Mamre is an Amorite ally in Genesis 14:13. Here the name also occurs in the statement about delayed judgment. The term can have broad or narrower scope in biblical texts. The passage does not teach inherited moral guilt for a modern people.
Canaanites •
15:21
A broad regional designation in many passages, including Genesis 12:6 and 13:7; sometimes one group alongside other named peoples.Do not treat the list as ten modern nations with neatly separated borders.
Girgashites •
15:21
Also included in Genesis 10:16 and the peoples list of Deuteronomy 7:1.Little secure detail is supplied about their exact territory. Proposed archaeological identifications remain uncertain.
Jebusites •
15:21
2 Samuel 5:6–9 associates them with Jerusalem before David captures its stronghold. This later association helps orientation but does not supply precise borders for Genesis 15.

Reading the list well: The promised land was inhabited. Later biblical references help us recognise names, but cannot always establish the same group’s location centuries earlier. Overlapping labels and incomplete evidence call for care.

Cross-references: Kenites and Kenizzites • Hittites in Genesis 23 • Rephaim and Bashan • Jebusites and Jerusalem. NABRE notes identify the Wadi of Egypt with Wadi el-Arish; other interpretations of the boundary expression exist.

The developing covenant story •

Genesis 12 call, Genesis 13 reaffirmed promise, Genesis 15 ceremony and Genesis 17 covenant sign
Call → reaffirmed promise → covenant ceremony → covenant sign

Genesis 12

Genesis 13

Land and countless descendants reaffirmed.

Genesis 15

The Lord makes a covenant with Abram.

Genesis 17

Covenant sign, new names and clarification concerning Sarah and Isaac.

This is not the Bible’s first covenant: God’s covenant with Noah appears earlier (Genesis 6:18; 9:8–17). Abram becomes Abraham in Genesis 17:5.

Further details worth noticing •

  • Vision and divine word: 15:1 frames the encounter as revelation. Avoid turning the illustration into a claim about exactly what God looked like.
  • Deep sleep: the Hebrew term also appears in Genesis 2:21. This is an interesting literary connection; the text does not make the two scenes identical.
  • Three years old: the age of the larger animals is specified. The passage gives no Trinitarian explanation for that number.
  • Abram’s own future: 15:15 promises peaceful death at a good age, while the descendants’ experience unfolds later.
  • Promise beyond one lifetime: the story invites patient trust without treating every personal wish as a divine promise.
  • Land and Christian hope: Galatians 3:16, 29 reads the Abrahamic promise through Christ and those belonging to him. This theological connection does not turn the chapter into a simple modern political boundary map.

Catholic reflection and prayer •

God meets Abram in uncertainty. We too can bring our anxieties to prayer, receive grace and take the next faithful step.

Faith includes patient trust and a response expressed in love. Ask for strength to serve while waiting, rather than placing life on hold until every question is answered.

Read God’s commitment as an invitation to hope, not a guarantee that every hardship ends in wealth or that every personal desire will be granted.

  1. What fear can I bring honestly to God?
  2. How can faith become an act of love today?
  3. Can I remain faithful while fulfilment is still unseen?

Faithful God, be our strength in uncertainty. Help us receive your grace, trust your word and let our faith bear fruit in love. Guide us through waiting and darkness with hope in you. Amen.
