GENESIS • CHAPTER 12 • BIBLE STUDY

Abram’s Call — Blessed to Be a Blessing

God calls Abram to go forth, promises blessing for the nations, and accompanies a journey marked by worship, famine and human weakness.

The Call of Abram •

Genesis 12:1–20 • ഉല്പത്തി 12:1–20

English

12:1

[a]Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.

12:2

And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

12:3

I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and by you all the families of the earth shall bless themselves.”[b]

12:4

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

12:5

And Abram took Sar′ai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions which they had gathered, and the persons that they had gotten in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan,

12:6

Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak[c] of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.

12:7

Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

12:8

Thence he removed to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

12:9

And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb.

Abram and Sarai in Egypt •

12:10

Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.

12:11

When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sar′ai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful to behold;

12:12

and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; then they will kill me, but they will let you live.

12:13

Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared on your account.”

12:14

When Abram entered Egypt the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

12:15

And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

12:16

And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, he-asses, menservants, maidservants, she-asses, and camels.

12:17

But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sar′ai, Abram’s wife.

12:18

So Pharaoh called Abram, and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

12:19

Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife, take her, and be gone.”

12:20

And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him; and they set him on the way, with his wife and all that he had.

God’s call and promises •

Illustrated call and promises: departure, a great nation, blessing, all families and the land promise
Genesis 12:1–3, 7 • Promise precedes complete fulfilment

Go forth • 12:1

Abram is called beyond familiar land, kinship and household security towards a land God will show him.

A great nation • 12:2

God promises a future people, although Sarai’s childlessness has already been stated in Genesis 11:30.

Blessing and a name • 12:2–3

Abram receives blessing to become a blessing. The promise reaches beyond private success towards the families of the earth.

Land for descendants • 12:7

The promise concerns Abram’s descendants. The land is already inhabited; a promise is not the same as immediate possession.

Genesis 12 announces the promises; the covenant passages develop in Genesis 15 and 17. The promise imagery illustrates a future hope, not children already born to Abram here.

Abram’s journey and important places •

Approximate route from Haran through Shechem, the camp between Bethel and Ai, the Negev and Egypt
Genesis 12:4–10 • Approximate locations and route
  1. Haran • 12:4–5

Abram departs at seventy-five with Sarai, Lot and the wider household.

  2. Shechem and the oak of Moreh • 12:6–7

A divine appearance, a land promise and an altar mark this stop.

  3. Between Bethel and Ai • 12:8

Bethel lies west of the campsite and Ai east. Abram pitches his tent, builds an altar and calls on the Lord.

  4. Negeb / Negev • 12:9

The journey continues southward into the dry southern region.

  5. Egypt • 12:10–20

Severe famine prompts a temporary stay. The account then turns to fear, concealment, intervention and departure.

Babel and Abram •

Contrast between Babel’s builders seeking their own name and Abram departing in response to God’s promise
A literary comparison • Genesis 11:4 and 12:1–3

Babel: a name for ourselves

The builders seek their own renown and fear scattering.

Abram: a name God gives

Abram departs, trusting the promise that God will make his name great and extend blessing to others.

This contrast concerns the purpose and source of human greatness; it does not condemn every settled community or every ambitious project.

Tents and altars •

Abram worshipping beside a stone altar near his household’s tents
Devotional reconstruction • Genesis 12:8

Abram builds altars at Shechem and near Bethel. Worship accompanies his movement through the land.

Tents suggest the travelling household; altars mark worship. The phrase tents and altars is a helpful study theme, not a claim that every detail has a hidden symbolic meaning.

Hebrews 11:8–10 reads Abraham’s journey as faith expressed in obedience and hope.

Abram and Sarai in Egypt •

An unnamed Pharaoh confronting Abram, with Sarai beside Abram and departure preparations nearby
Respectful artistic reconstruction • Genesis 12:17–20

Famine after the promise

The call does not remove hardship. This episode invites reflection on trust during difficulty, without claiming every famine or setback is a direct divine test.

Fear and responsibility

Abram’s attempt to protect his own life exposes Sarai to danger. The narrative does not make concealment exemplary. We can examine how fear affects truthfulness and the safety of others.

Intervention and rebuke

God afflicts Pharaoh’s household, and Pharaoh confronts Abram. Material gain in verse 16 does not mean deception is approved. Pharaoh remains unnamed.

An Exodus echo

Famine, Egypt, Pharaoh, divine affliction and departure anticipate themes in Israel’s later story. This is a literary and theological parallel, not a claim that these were the ten plagues of Exodus.

The promise and the nations •

Genesis 12’s promise linked to Christ and the nations in Paul’s interpretation in Galatians 3
New Testament interpretation • Genesis 12:3; Galatians 3:8, 14

Paul reads the blessing promised to Abraham as anticipating the good news for the Gentiles. Through Jesus Christ, Abraham’s blessing reaches the nations, including the promise of the Spirit (Galatians 3:8, 14).

This is the clearest prophetic or fulfilment connection for the chapter: it is grounded in the New Testament’s interpretation. It is not a hidden prediction invented from each event.

The supplied English in 12:3 reads shall bless themselves; the Malayalam uses a passive blessing expression. These reflect an interpretive question in the Hebrew. Both supplied texts remain unchanged. Paul’s reading follows the blessing reaching the nations.

Key facts and connections •

Abram, not yet Abraham

The names here are Abram and Sarai. Their renaming occurs in Genesis 17; it should not be moved into this chapter.

Lot and the household

Lot is Abram’s nephew. The journey includes the wider household and livelihoods, not simply two isolated travellers.

Seventy-five years • 12:4

Abram’s departure age is stated. The text does not explain 75 as a numerical code, so our reflection should focus on his response rather than invented numerology.

Stars belong later

The star-counting scene occurs in Genesis 15, not Genesis 12. Likewise, do not identify a particular Pharaoh or add precise journey dates not supplied by the text.

Catholic reflection •

The Catechism places Abraham’s call within God’s purpose of gathering humanity (59–60). Being chosen opens towards service and blessing for others.

For our lives, the chapter invites obedient trust, worship during change, and honesty about fear and failure. God’s promise is not a guarantee of immediate comfort or approval of every decision.

Catechism 59–60.

Prayer
Lord, give us faith to follow your call, humility to worship along the way, and courage to act truthfully when we are afraid. Make the blessings we receive a blessing for others. Lead our families in your love. Amen.

For reflection: How can my blessings serve others? Where does fear tempt me to compromise someone else’s wellbeing?
