GENESIS • CHAPTER 11 • BIBLE STUDY
Babel and the Road to Abraham
From a city seeking its own name to a family preparing for God’s call: language, ambition, ancestry and journey.
The Tower of Babel •
Genesis 11:1–32 • ഉല്പത്തി 11:1–32
11:1
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.
11:2
And as they migrated from the east,[a] they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
11:3
And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
11:4
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
11:5
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built.
11:6
And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
11:7
Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
11:8
So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
11:9
Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused[b] the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Descendants of Shem •
11:10
These are the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;
11:11
and Shem lived after the birth of Arpachshad five hundred years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:12
When Arpachshad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah;

11:13
and Arpachshad lived after the birth of Shelah four hundred three years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:14
When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber;
11:15
and Shelah lived after the birth of Eber four hundred three years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:16
When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg;
11:17
and Eber lived after the birth of Peleg four hundred thirty years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:18
When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu;
11:19
and Peleg lived after the birth of Reu two hundred nine years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:20
When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug;
11:21
and Reu lived after the birth of Serug two hundred seven years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:22
When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor;
11:23
and Serug lived after the birth of Nahor two hundred years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:24
When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah;
11:25
and Nahor lived after the birth of Terah one hundred nineteen years, and had other sons and daughters.
11:26
When Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
Descendants of Terah •
11:27
Now these are the descendants of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.
11:28
Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
11:29
Abram and Nahor took wives; the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah. She was the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.
11:30
Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.
11:31
Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan; but when they came to Haran, they settled there.
11:32
The days of Terah were two hundred five years; and Terah died in Haran.
The story of Babel •

One language • 11:1–2
The people settle on a plain in Shinar. Their shared speech makes organised work possible.
A name for ourselves • 11:3–4
They seek fame and resist scattering. Christian reflection examines pride and self-sufficiency, rather than condemning building skills or cooperation themselves.
God comes down • 11:5–7
The language describes God’s attention and action in human terms. The irony is striking: the tower described as reaching heaven still needs God to come down to inspect it.
Building stops • 11:8–9
Speech is confused and people scatter. The text does not describe lightning destroying the tower or the tower collapsing.

How could they build such a tower? •

What Genesis states
The supplied English mentions thoroughly fired bricks and bitumen for mortar. The supplied Malayalam uses കളിമണ്ണ് in the corresponding phrase. Each text remains unchanged above; the illustration follows the English wording and Mesopotamian context.
What is a ziggurat?
Ancient Mesopotamian temples could stand on enormous stepped platforms called ziggurats. Such structures provide a plausible architectural background; Genesis does not identify an exact blueprint.
Materials and support
Clay could be moulded into bricks. A massive core, broad base and progressively smaller stages help support a high structure. Fired bricks and bitumen appear in historical building practice. These details explain capability, not the exact construction of Babel.
Height and labour
Large projects required organised brick-making, transport and labour. Genesis gives no height, number of workers or duration. Its heavens language conveys ambition and impressive height, not a measured distance to God’s dwelling.
Historical references: Metropolitan Museum — Ur: The Ziggurat · British Museum — Fired brick from the Nimrud ziggurat. Nimrud is a different site, not a measured height for Babel.
Babel and Pentecost •

Babel
Shared speech does not preserve unity when human ambition closes in on itself; confusion and scattering follow.
Pentecost
The Holy Spirit enables understanding among people hearing different languages. Unity does not require every language or culture to disappear.

From Shem to Abram •

A continuing line
Shem → Arpachshad → Shelah → Eber → Peleg → Reu → Serug → Nahor → Terah. The genealogy narrows from the nations to the household preparing for Abram’s story.
Two Nahors and two Harans
Nahor, Terah’s father, differs from Nahor, Abram’s brother. Haran the person differs from Haran the destination. Milcah is both Haran’s daughter and Nahor’s wife; she appears twice in the chart to show both relationships.
The chart follows the Hebrew-based sequence in the supplied text. The Greek textual tradition adds Kenan between Arpachshad and Shelah; see the USCCB note on 11:12.
Recorded lifespans •

| Name / പേര് | At named son’s birth | Years afterwards | Total | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shem ഷേം | 100 | 500 | 600 | 11:10–11 |
| Arpachshad അര്പ്പക്ഷാദ് | 35 | 403 | 438 | 11:12–13 |
| Shelah ഷേലാഹ് | 30 | 403 | 433 | 11:14–15 |
| Eber ഏബര് | 34 | 430 | 464 | 11:16–17 |
| Peleg പേലെഗ് | 30 | 209 | 239 | 11:18–19 |
| Reu റെവു | 32 | 207 | 239 | 11:20–21 |
| Serug സെരൂഗ് | 30 | 200 | 230 | 11:22–23 |
| Nahor നാഹോര് | 29 | 119 | 148 | 11:24–25 |
| Terah തേരാഹ് | 70: sons introduced | Not separately stated | 205 (stated) | 11:26, 32 |
Totals are arithmetic sums, except Terah’s directly stated 205 years. Verse 26 introduces Terah’s three sons together; it need not mean triplets or establish Abram’s individual birth year. Eber lives longer than Shelah, and Terah longer than Nahor: the sequence is not a steady decline.
Terah’s family journey •

Terah takes Abram, Sarai and Lot from Ur towards Canaan, but the household settles in Haran. Terah dies there. The chapter does not describe them completing the journey to Canaan.
The map is a geographical reconstruction, not an exact documented itinerary. Genesis 12 continues Abram’s journey and call.
Key facts and patterns •
Babel and Babylon
Babel is the Hebrew name of Babylon; the narrative makes a wordplay with the verb for confusing. The name’s historical interpretation and the story’s wordplay should be distinguished.
Chapter 10 and chapter 11
Chapter 10 surveys nations and languages; Babel supplies a focused account of scattering. The literary order need not be read as every event following every detail in strict chronological sequence.
Genealogy as a bridge
Genesis 5 moves from Adam to Noah and three sons; Genesis 11 moves from Shem to Terah and three sons. The lists carry the narrative across generations.
Sarai’s childlessness • 11:30
This prepares a major tension in the following promise of descendants. It is a narrative circumstance, not a statement that childlessness determines a person’s worth or guilt.
Catholic reflection •
Babel invites us to examine whether our achievements serve self-glory or communion. Pentecost points towards a unity formed by the Holy Spirit, with openness to God and to one another.
The family at Haran reminds us that a journey can pause before the next step. This is a devotional reflection, not a prediction that every interrupted plan must unfold in the same way.

Prayer
Lord, guide our talents towards service rather than pride. Teach us to listen across differences, welcome the unity of your Spirit, and trust you in each step of our journey. Bless our families with humility, courage and love. Amen.
