God creates the heavens and the earth •
Genesis 1:1–31 • English: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
1:1
[a]In the beginning God created[b] the heavens and the earth.
1:2
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit[c] of God was moving over the face of the waters.
1:3
And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
1:4
And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.
1:5
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
1:6
And God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”
1:7
And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so.
1:8
And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
1:9
And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
1:10
God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
1:11
And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so.
1:12
The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
1:13
And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.
1:14
And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years,
1:15
and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.
1:16
And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also.
1:17
And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth,
1:18
to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
1:19
And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
1:20
And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.”
1:21
So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
1:22
And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
1:23
And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
1:24
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
1:25
And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
1:26
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”
1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
1:28
And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”
1:29
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.
1:30
And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
1:31
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
The six days: forming and filling •

| Settings / ക്രമീകരണം | Corresponding lights and life / അനുബന്ധ സൃഷ്ടികൾ |
|---|---|
| Day 1: light and darkness • വെളിച്ചവും ഇരുളും | Day 4: sun, moon and stars • സൂര്യനും ചന്ദ്രനും നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളും |
| Day 2: sky and waters • ആകാശവും ജലവും | Day 5: sea creatures and birds • ജലജീവികളും പക്ഷികളും |
| Day 3: land and vegetation • കരയും സസ്യങ്ങളും | Day 6: land animals and humanity • കരയിലെ ജീവികളും മനുഷ്യരും |
This arrangement helps readers see order and correspondence. It is a literary framework for studying the passage, not a claim to reproduce the physical stages of cosmic or biological development. The account reaches its completion with the seventh day in Genesis 2:1–3.
See the USCCB notes on Genesis 1:1–2:3.
Creation through God’s word •

God speaks
The narrative repeatedly presents God’s command as effective. Creation depends on divine initiative.
Order and distinction
Separation, naming, boundaries and living abundance give the account its ordered rhythm.
Blessing and life
Living creatures and humanity receive blessing. Fruitfulness is presented as a gift.
Evening and morning
The repeated refrain marks the days and contributes to the passage’s deliberate structure.
Light before the sun •
Day 1 distinguishes light and darkness; day 4 introduces the heavenly lights that govern day and night. The pairing can be understood within the chapter’s literary arrangement.
The text does not describe a physical mechanism for first-day light. Catholic teaching does not prescribe one particular scientific explanation for this detail.
Is the sun the Son? No. Their similar sound is English wordplay, not an explanation of the Hebrew text. The sun belongs to creation; the Son is eternal and uncreated. Christ as Light is a theological connection, not an identification with the physical sun.
Creation in the light of the Trinity •

Genesis speaks of God, divine speech and the Spirit over the waters. In the light of the New Testament, Christians confess creation as the shared work of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Let us make: Christians have read Genesis 1:26 in a Trinitarian light. The plural by itself does not establish three Persons; the doctrine is understood through fuller revelation.
The image is a theological interpretation, not a photograph of the beginning. It does not divide creation into separate jobs performed by three gods.
The term in Genesis 1:2 can be rendered spirit, wind or breath in different translations. Read it within its ancient setting and the Christian reception of Scripture. Catechism §§290–292 explicitly teaches creation as the common work of the Trinity.
Made in God’s image •

Male and female share God-given dignity. Image and likeness do not mean that God has a human body. They introduce humanity’s relationship with God and responsibility within creation. Dignity is not earned by strength, appearance, wealth or ability.
The group portrait illustrates an application to all humanity; it does not depict a population supposedly present before Adam. See Catechism §§355–361.
Dominion as responsible care •

Authority over creation carries accountability to the Creator. The command to exercise dominion is not permission for unlimited exploitation. Care for land, water and living creatures should accompany respect for people, especially those most affected by environmental harm.
The scenes show present-day applications in an illustrative style, not a reconstruction of activities in the first creation account. See Laudato Si’ §67.
Good… very good • നല്ലത്…

The repeated affirmation of goodness reaches a whole-creation assessment in 1:31. Matter and the human body are not inherently evil. Receiving the world as a gift encourages gratitude rather than contempt or careless consumption.
Creation and Christ, the Light •

John 1:1–3
The eternal Word exists in the beginning; all things are made through him. Jesus is not a creature first produced on day 1 or day 4.
Colossians 1:15–17
Creation is described as through Christ and for him. He is before all things and sustains their unity.
2 Corinthians 4:6
Paul connects God’s command for light with illumination in our hearts through the knowledge of Christ.
New creation
Creation opens Scripture’s story; Christian hope looks towards its renewal in Christ. Compare 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Revelation 21:1–5.
Creation questions: teaching and speculation •
Must the days be 24-hour scientific stages?
Catholic interpretation attends to literary form. The six-day presentation need not be imposed as a modern scientific chronology. Theological meaning and scientific study of processes should be distinguished.
What about the gap theory?
A destroyed world or separate civilisation between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 is a speculative interpretation, not Catholic doctrine or an event narrated in this chapter.
A race before Adam?
The Church does not teach a separate pre-Adamic human civilisation. This must not be confused with scientific investigation of ancient life and human bodily origins.
Faith and evolution
Humani Generis §§36–37 permits investigation of bodily origins from pre-existing living matter, affirms divine creation of the soul and raises doctrinal limits concerning human unity and original sin. It is not an endorsement of every evolutionary or theological model.
Sources: Catechism §§283–289, 296 • Humani Generis §§36–37. An old universe, biological evolution and a destroyed pre-Adamic civilisation are different claims.
Words and details worth noticing •
- Heavens and earth: an expression encompassing the whole created order.
- Firmament / sky: ancient cosmological language; the term should not simply be equated with a modern scientific model of the atmosphere.
- Sun and moon: described by their functions as greater and lesser lights; they are creatures, not deities.
- Humanity: the Hebrew term adam can refer collectively to humankind; avoid assuming every occurrence is a personal name.
- According to their kinds: the text’s description of living variety is not identical to the categories of modern biological taxonomy.
- Food as gift: plants are assigned for food in 1:29–30. Compare the later permission concerning meat in Genesis 9:3.
- Chapter boundaries: Eden, the formation from dust and the rib account belong to Genesis 2; the serpent and Fall belong to Genesis 3.
The account continues: completion and rest •

The seventh day completes the opening creation account in the next chapter. God’s rest expresses completion and the blessing of sacred time, not divine exhaustion. We will study the passage fully with Genesis 2.
Reflection, prayer and summary •
- Where can I recognise creation as a gift today?
- Whose dignity do I need to respect more carefully?
- What practical act of care can our family undertake?
Father, through your eternal Son and in the Holy Spirit, you give life and sustain creation. Teach us gratitude, respect for every person and faithful care for your gifts. Let the light of Christ guide our hearts. Amen.
Summary: Genesis 1 proclaims God as Creator, presents an ordered and good world, and gives humanity dignity and responsibility. Christians read its light and divine speech in relation to Christ, while confessing creation as the common work of the Trinity.
