Behold, I am the servant of the Lord…
When the angel appeared to Mary and said that she’ll conceive in the womb and bare a son all sorts of questions might’ve went through her mind. When Mary asks the angel how is it all possible, the Angel says “The Holy spirit will come upon you, and the power of the most high will over shadow you” Luke 1:31-37, and the angel reassures her that “nothing will be impossible with God”. Mary accepted this plan of God and said “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” Luke 1:38.
I was always amused by the obedience and faithfulness seen by this fourteen year old girl, it is something we often don’t have. For a servant obedience is not a choice but an obligation, but it will be a delight if they carry it out willingly, just as Mary did, “ My soul magnifies the lord and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour” Luke 1:47.
Joseph whom Mary was to marry was a righteous man, he too was very obedient to God. It is all well and good that they obeyed God’s plan, but how did they listen to God’s voice. The first time the angel spoke to Joseph, he was sleeping, he listens to the angel in his dream and he did what the angel commanded him! “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” Matthew 1:20-24. Do we get such dreams? See how strong his relationship was with God, that even when he’s asleep he can listen to God’s voice. Can we do this in our lives? Do we spend enough time with our Lord to seek his will?
Remember, he likes to talk to us in the silence of our heart; Revelation 3:20 says, “Listen! I am standing at the door knocking, if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you, and eat with you and you with me” so take some time during this advent season to really listen to his voice.
Only once when we listen to him, we can obey his commandment. Joseph simply obeys, he does not utter a word, or ask any questions regarding Mary’s pregnancy; a faithful servant of the lord don’t need to ask questions. However big or small it is, sometimes it can be extremely hard to obey the Lord, but what is the greatest gift of this Obedience? St. Peter says in Acts 5:32 “We testify this, so too does the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those that obey him”. Holy Spirit is the greatest gift one can ask for this Christmas, Jesus said “When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” John 16:13, and what is the truth? When Jesus was praying for his disciples he said “Father sanctify them in your truth, your word is truth” John 17:17.
Let us pray ‘Lord Jesus, help us to listen to your word, to seek your will and be obedient to it. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, who will transform our minds and hearts and lead us into the truth which is your word.
